AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

Because I think annoyingly noisy and persistent activities should ideally not be carried out on one of our rare sunny bank holidays? Yep, rage bait, guilty as charged 🤥

So you want them to do outdoor activities in the rain?

FFS! Stick the radio on and have an ice cream

VintageLane · 25/05/2026 17:00

Well. We work full time. My husband briefly used his drill, circular saw and router this morning from about 10-11. He mowed the lawn on Saturday. I don’t think that’s unreasonable. He’s mindful about not making noise for prolonged periods, although we have a large garden so we’re not on top of any neighbours.

Enjoy your garden bday! Fingers crossed nobody will be mowing and strimming all day. Although I’m sure you won’t complain if they do.

Have you actually complained to them?

Those boys who have never grown up love playing with noisy toys don't they?
Don't see many women messing about with angle grinders, power tools and being anal about their lawn stripes.
Maybe it's because women have more interesting things to do.🤔

Wow, what a sexist daft comment. Working people the weekend is the only time they can often do work. And would you be ok if an equally sexist comment was aimed at women.

we can’t demand that shite stops them be guilty of it ourselves. I suspect you think you sounded cool and edgy. You didn’t.

Notmyreality · 25/05/2026 16:58

Never met a woman who would know how to use an angle grinder..

It's not brain surgery.

Not only do I know how to use one, so does my sister, female cousins and nieces. Just don't have much need for them.

I wouldn’t hear it over the din! It’s that bad.

I admire the OP's attempt of lowering population by demanding electric power tools should be only used in rain😂

myavocadoisgrowing · 25/05/2026 17:03

Oh, could be that they have to do DIY when they have a day off from working all week?

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 17:03

Balloonhearts · 25/05/2026 16:59

You're calling other people morons but don't know that you can't mow wet grass? 😂

Of course you can. Not sopping wet obviously but to pretend today is the ONLY day out of the very dry weather we’ve had to mow the grass is absurd.

If you work fulltime you only have weekends to do jobs around the house. Today is a long weekend so might as well take advantage.

Yes this!!!…there are a dozen threads about the neighbours who have no pride in their home and garden! Ffs some people are never bloody happy!

OttersOnAPlane · 25/05/2026 17:03

DH and 24yo DS have been demolishing and rebuilding the deck

NDN on one side has been building a pergola and using power tools to try remove a tree stump.
NDN on the other side has been fitting a kitchen.
Both have borrowed power tools from us.

It's sawdust and machinery everywhere in our neighborhood this weekend, but everyone stops around 4 for a nice cold beer.

Get over yourself. You can't use electric tools in the rain.

They can live with my neighbours builder who removed an entire chimney bottom to top 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Darwin awards all around.

Suspect he was more focused on getting the job done than delighting his neighbours. When would be suitable for you op

You absolutely would. You’re just being silly.

I’m sat out in the garden right now and I can hear the birds and someone mowing their lawn. I love it, nothing better than hearing human life around you knowing everyone is enjoying the sunshine.

It isn’t either 25 degrees OR biblical rain. We’ve had many many dry, non bank holiday, ordinary days to do this lately. I just think getting annoying noisy tools out on the couple of days the year most people are guaranteed to be off work, and in rare good weather, is an arsehole move. Sorry but I do, and judging by my neighbours complaints I’m not the only one to think this.

Exactly this, we've had a good blitz of the garden today, DH went out at 9 and cut and strimmed the grass, I've cut back the hedges and done the weeding, we had a break for a couple of hours around lunchtime to go to the garden centre and I've spent the rest of the afternoon potting and planting. The weekends have been so wet and miserable there's not been time to get it done when we both work. It's my birthday next weekend and I am looking forward to enjoying it in a lovely garden. DH was ready to go out with the mower at 8 but fear of a MN worthy neighbour had me curfewing him until 9

Ah, the lazy buggers round your way will be hopping mad. Or the would be if they weren't so lazy and just want to sit around all day.

So you want me to use power tools outside in the rain? So you can lay in the sun......

Not in the rain, just on a cooler day.

Nothing says joie de vivre like spending your bank holiday replacing a window or drilling, does it?

It’s like the posters think they don’t exist, it’s either a roasting hot bank holiday OR polar rain.

Probably, I’m not getting my tape measure out.

Today we’ve also had several low flying aircraft, a helicopter, someone building something and on a still day like this we can hear boats and jet skis on the sea over a mile away.

Just grow up a little and stick some music on.

Haha do they all, really? That’s some excessive grinding going on in your family.

BridgetJonesV2 · 25/05/2026 17:07

We live in a village and it's been a non stop cacophony of lawn mowers, chain saws, strimmers and next door's screaming kids since about 8am. Usual bank holiday. I'm happy sit inside in the cool with the dogs watching old episodes of Bake Off tbh, better than being at work.
