https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-15830845/Andy-Burnham-men-identify-women-use-female-toilets.html

'I don't think that's a majority view. I think it's a minority view and quite a small minority view, actually. But it is a view so you can't completely ignore it. Possibly they might be women who have experienced male violence at some point in their life. I don't know, that's one way of looking at it.'

Andy Burnham backs men who identify as female using women's toilets

The Greater Manchester mayor said the idea that single sex spaces like toilets should be protected for biological women was a 'minority view'.

If they don’t see a problem with men using ladies toilets then why do they have a problem as trans women using men’s toilets?

Is it because they are threatened by men who don’t want them in there either so they feel safer in the ladies where they are the stronger sex.

You should be actively campaigning for AB - as you said on another thread, if he becomes PM, you reckon there’ll be a general election and then Reform will be in - which is what you want!

Said it last time, saying it again. I am a single issue voter, this issue. If I get a party on the left saying women have rights, have value and don't exist to validate men - I'll vote for them. Can't see one right now though. Can you?

I've just got back from Spain and it was prevalent at the airport I was. And somewhere else.
As I said, it is cubicles. Lockable door. Man and woman sign on the outside. It's the same at Heathrow terminal 5 lounge also

Haven't been in the T5 lounge, but the toilets in the terminal itself (which are for the majority of passengers) are separate sex ones.

GreyskySexRealistsky · 20/05/2026 12:01

It doesn't affect men, so lots of them don't think about it.
In their toilets they take a piss, zip up and leave. Some even wash their hands.
They don't think about all the things a woman might need a toilet for.

I appreciate the men who DO think about the issues involved here.

@SingleSexSpacesInSchools
If you're digging up old dirt, Nigel Farage was a racist thug at school 😀

I don't care. This is about Burnham.

We have on tape Burnham saying that effectively women's rights don't matter and anyone who's says they do is a biggot.

He can fuck off.

He's wrong about this of course but there's only a small number of men who want to use the ladies toilets, so surely by his logic they should just get over it

I think there are considerably more serious issues we need to know his views on.

Many, many other serious issues of today also concern women, who are more than 50% of the population. If you don't know what a woman is, how can you even begin to address all of those other issues?

If politicians cannot even understand, and be proven to understand, the basics, how can we ever have confidence in them when dealing with everything else?

Until about 10 years ago, single-sex spaces based on actual, biological sex, was one of those basics.

I agree with him. Me and every cisgender woman I know are not the slightest bit bothered about where transgender or non binary people go to the toilet. I’m way more worried about actual threats to women and girls, particularly threats to their reproductive rights and a growing right wing movement with links to places like the Heritage Foundation that are fuelling and funding misogyny and transphobia. I’m quite frankly sick of the very real VAWG being weaponised in culture wars, especially being an actual abuse survivor myself.

Edited

But every one of MY female friends IS bothered about this.

What a ridiculous thread four years ago firstly everyone was saying the same thing. We’ve now got a new law. keep up.

I voted YABU as this is a massive distraction and there are about a million more important things to be dealing with in the UK right now - this has been set up as a right wing dead cat.

If you really care about women and their rights, you'll stay well away from voting Reform, who are going to have to repay their Evangelical US backers with some anti-women, anti-abortion, pro-tradwife policies at some point. Farage has already been agitating about abortion control.

I think we have much more concrete evidence that Labour is anti women than rumours and conspiracy theories about "far right" funding of UK parties - given we have actual tape of Andy actually saying this.

Once a left wing party makes this core to their manifesto, I'll vote for them.

That's a really good point.

If minority opinion is not important, why did a minority of men who want to access women's spaces not get told no?

Yet again, double standards

Exactly. Campaign for men to be accepting of gender non conforming men in their spaces.

What new law?

The law has not changed.

AprilMizzel · 20/05/2026 12:06

They never ask do they - they say women are all fine unless there something "wrong" with them - ie been attacked or religious.

Privacy and safety women talk about just doesn't seem to matter. A minority issue something that affects 51% of the population. Another left wing man telling women their issues are completely unimportant.

It's not the sole issue I would vote on but is a powerful indicator of how much listening a party or indidual is actually capable of and how much they just don't care about large swaths of electorate.

Firstly, it's not a new law. It's clarification of an existing law.

And you might have a point if Labour showed any desire to actually implement that existing law. But they don't.

I feel that he is implying that the only women who might have an objection are in some way psychologically damaged by a previous negative experience, and therefore their opinion is not rational and they shouldn’t be listened to. Which is incredibly offensive.

This ^
Im objecting. I don’t think I’m in minority and actually I don’t have a particular bad past experience - I have an average experience .

LostNFoundSV · 20/05/2026 12:07

YANBU but AB most definitely is BU!

askmenow · 20/05/2026 12:07

Where do they find these nonces!
Has he no family/ wife, girl children to put him right?
Or is it correct that he has a “King” complex.

viques · 20/05/2026 12:07

Two questions.

Is Andy Burnham a woman?

Is it a man’s right to give away women’s spaces?

ThatCyanCat · 20/05/2026 12:07

There's so much ridiculous talk about how knowing men aren't women and that women have a right to single sex spaces is a tenet of right wing ideology. It's not, obviously, but how telling that left wing ideologues think women should self sacrifice to help prevent migration to the right over the issue - but don't think the mainstream left should change its position to the one reflecting reality. It's somehow still all women's fault, and it's important enough to sacrifice them but not important enough for the left to, frankly, stop fucking lying.

If anyone actually truly believes single sex intimate spaces, sports and so on are a right wing tenet (and you don't, but if you need something external to give you permission to reject it), then the Communist Party is GC and sex realist, so if it's left wing enough for them, I'm sure it's enough for you.

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 20/05/2026 12:07

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 20/05/2026 11:50

Women wanting single sex spaces to remain so is ‘right wing’ now is it? Thinking men can’t become women by chucking on a dress makes us all Reform voters? Oh my sides.

And why is it only on Mumsnet where people assume women can’t care about more than one issue, at the same time.

it's another shet down technique. Scream "far right" at anythign you don't want to engage with. Like women's rights weirdly.
