Is Andy Burnham reasonable to say only a small minority of women object to men being in their toilets? YABU he's right, YANBU he's wrong *titled tweaked by MNHQ at OP's request*

'I don't think that's a majority view. I think it's a minority view and quite a small minority view, actually. But it is a view so you can't completely ignore it. Possibly they might be women who have experienced male violence at some point in their life. I don't know, that's one way of looking at it.'

Andy Burnham backs men who identify as female using women's toilets

The Greater Manchester mayor said the idea that single sex spaces like toilets should be protected for biological women was a 'minority view'.

#Sadtimes.

Phillipson's having a bugger of a day too.

All the SEND parents have told her what they think of the DfE splashing vast amounts of cash on silly, tone deaf and foot in mouth videos with Gemma Collins instead of actually listening to them about their severely distressed children's educational needs. She's apparently told them they're all snobs for not 'joining in the fun'. Which of course has made things so much better.

They keep on telling everyone what to perceive and think and being baffled and cross that it goes down like a bucket of cold sick.

Aaaghhhh! What an image....😮

I'm sorry you had to experience that - but good to know other women thought it was disgusting too!

I know some men who would also find that a disgusting way to behave in front of women.

Amazingly, nowhere in the national press. Edited to add no it IS, but you have to Google it, I couldn't find it on BBC or Sky news by looking at the sites, it's well hidden. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd6pw448nqdo

All over the social media feeds of parents and the SEND groups, and on Phillipson's and the DfE SM accounts.

Wow! Genuinely interesting to see these responses. Yes AB’s words re experiences of violence are clumsy, but personally (and I know amongst my girlfriends) I don’t have any issue with trans women using the same bathroom / changing room. Trans women have often been through a lot to get to where they feel they want to be, and I feel this focus on them (and a few pretenders) distracts from the real day to day issues of male violence towards women.

also - even worst some of my friends (non-feminine women) have been confronted by people as to why they’re in the toilet. This is hurtful and rude. If we remember that trans women are less that 1% of the Uk population and just let people use the toilet they feel most comfortable with then we can all crack on with our lives.

Is it 2018 again? I'm getting terrible deja vu from this post.

So you found women's comments on this thread interesting, without, apparently, comprehending a single word of them? That's a skill right there. To be that willfully blind and deaf takes dedication. No really, I'm impressed. Truly well done. 👏

This thread? Um... no the publicity his wanky statement is getting everywhere might change a few minds though.

It is the Daily Mail. So whether the quote is entirely accurate I don’t know. They are not going to favour Andy Burnham at all. Whether edited etc…

I've seen the video. It is accurate.

And illegal if this was in the UK

Why do you consider male toilets unsafe for some men, at the same time as arguing they should be in the women's toilet but we should shut up and be told they're not dangerous.

It's not my lack of imagination that's the issue here.

And no the disabled provision isn't there for just anyone who thinks they're special.

I didn't

I very often feel gaslighted by Labour's proclamations of greatness.

Reading through your comments, you very clearly consider men in dresses using men's toilets at risk. You insulted another person about their "lack of imagination" in relation to them suggesting they should use the gents, implying they're unsafe.

And then you suggest they should use disabled facilities.

What exactly are you claiming to have meant?

That poster said that I supported men in dresses using women's facilities. I did not, because I don't.

I think anyone who can't imagine, in some places, a man in a dress being verbally and possibly abused in a gents loo then I stick by my statement that is a lack of imagination, since it already happens out on the streets.

And yes, that is a problem that is caused by men. That does not mean we have to have a complete absence of empathy for their situation.

Possibly should read possibly physically.

What empathy have TIM shown to women? I mean, rape threats, death threats, physical abuse, verbal abuse…. Just to women saying no. Why do women owe these men empathy?

So message to men that this is unacceptable. As women generally bear the brunt of men's bad behaviour, I'm not sure it's beholden to them to do much performative empathy here. People should be treated with respect, of course. Focus on the problem, not women's reaction.

Quite.

Non reciprocal 'empathy' and 'kindness' and 'respect' in the face of overt ill treatment, is just plain demanding of submission with menaces.

If that kind of service is wanted, it needs to be sought from those who charge by the hour.

Why are you lecturing me like this, it doesn't conflict with anything I've written?

My empathy is not performative. There is a group of men who have been misled into believing they had rights they don't have. By people at the very top of politics and business.

They have genuinely lost something that they thought they were entitled to. I feel sorry for them.

That empathy on my part does not extend to the autogynophiles.

Empathy is not a token you exchange for an empathy token from another person.

There are men involved in all this who had nothing to do with threats to or abuse of women who are affected by this too. They have been "done to" by Stonewall as much as women, gay and lesbian and bi people have.

Your sympathy would be better directed to the people who have received the greatest abuse and harm from this long, sorry saga; women!

No men have lost anything. None lost a perfectly acceptable place to relieve themselves or their livelihood for speaking out.

You're very very selective who gains your empathy and excluding autogynophiles from those you presumably consider "real" transwomen is utterly absurd. How do we tell them apart exactly?
