Is Andy Burnham reasonable to say only a small minority of women object to men being in their toilets? YABU he's right, YANBU he's wrong *titled tweaked by MNHQ at OP's request*

'I don't think that's a majority view. I think it's a minority view and quite a small minority view, actually. But it is a view so you can't completely ignore it. Possibly they might be women who have experienced male violence at some point in their life. I don't know, that's one way of looking at it.'

Andy Burnham backs men who identify as female using women's toilets

The Greater Manchester mayor said the idea that single sex spaces like toilets should be protected for biological women was a 'minority view'.

I hate sharing with men

The self identity as a woman resulting in easy and undisputed access to woman's spaces is always going to attract predators. Of course there are trans women who are really struggling with identity and who are gentle and non predatory but the risk of the first occurring is, proven to be, huge.

Don’t be silly. Any predator will try their best to access to their intended targets. Goodness, men used to study/train years for the priesthood, teaching, and the rest. Also NGO’s, community organisations, pride organisations (that Stephen Ireland).

So, there are those who think men who someone vouches for as being gentle, or having a troubled mind are not like other men. How about men in wheelchairs, old men, or men who are a bit sad today? Maybe a man who has had penile cancer. Erectile dysfunction? These categories could cascade quite a bit.

I have no doubt there are men who have committed violent and sex offences whose families say they are just lovely.

Triskellion75 · 20/05/2026 18:36

Any politician that thinks that women can have penises will never get my vote, because they are basically saying that women's safety means shit to them.

Cailleach1 · 20/05/2026 18:36

All I’m trying to say (probably none too clearly) is that men are men. Leaving the crime statistics for the higher proportional conviction of ‘transwomen’ men for sex crimes aside, they are just simply men at the end of the day. Just like all the other men.

And, they're living in La La Land and lying to keep their seat. I don't want delusional seatwarmers in charge of public services at any level.

Do you think the wider electorate feel the same/decide their vote on this?

Burnham made the remarks reported by yhe Mail in 2022, but they don't seem to have put much dent in his support.

I think we agree. What I was trying to say is that the self id has made it a ridiculously open goal (like goalkeeper's gone for a pint with the entire defence kind of open goal) for the predators and the Supreme Court ruling must be followed.
So that trans women have a higher stat rate for crime is not due necessarily due to them being trans women but because of the opportunity that pretending to be trans presents in a society hell bent on eroding women's rights in favour of anyone with a penis saying that they feel feminine today.

Women's rights are not a key issue for most of the electorate.

However, they do care when a politician sounds stupid or dishonest.

I am not so sure that is true, sadly!

Time will tell, won't it? I think it's naive to think that only Daily Mail readers would be bothered by his stance.

I don't think at all that it would only be DM readers who would be bothered! That is not how I view the issue at all.

But I am not sure how many people make it the issue that decides their vote. But maybe we will be better able to tell in the early hours of June 19th.

Edited

I think it does have an impact, even if it only neutralises the other side's dishonesty.

Farage can spout rubbish, but if Burnham claims he doesn't understand sex who do you trust?

I think it'll take the shine off him a bit, enough to make him sweat at least. Can't stomach the idea of Reform getting in off the back of his stupidity.

Well that's how Labour have gifted votes to Reform until now. He's loyal to the cause at least.

'Burnham made the remarks reported by yhe Mail in 2022, but they don't seem to have put much dent in his support'

He was only a mayor. Surely fancying being PM is a different league and everything he has ever said and no one paid any attention to will come back to haunt him.

Brokentoes85 · 20/05/2026 19:14

Don't give 2 hoots in who's using a public toilet. Every single trans person I've come across has struggled in life and never made me feel treated. Cis men, yes, constantly, would never want a trans woman to have to use male toilets.

I don't think lots of politicians/wanna be politicians are using this to win votes.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 20/05/2026 19:17

The line up of 'I don't care about women (and haven't read the thread)' posters is as edifying as always.

Everyone struggles in life to some degree. Does not give them permission to walk over everyone.

It doesn't matter if you don't give 2 hoots. Men should not be in designated women's facilities. It really is not rocket science.

They really need to choose between "it's just a vote winner" and "literally everyone outside of MN thinks men can be women".

The problem is that once you think some men can be women, you've already peaked in dishonesty and absurdity, so you don't realise how bloody ridiculous everything you say after that sounds to anyone who's not compliant in your doublethink.

TemperanceWest · 20/05/2026 19:21

What difference does that make?

The message of not reading the posts here explaining issues for women, or of simply not valuing or caring about those women, is just objective fact. If there were more to it that the poster wished to share, the poster would explain so.

So do you think toilets should be mixed sex or do you understand that some people don't want to share toilets with the opposite sex?

Every single trans person I've come across has struggled in life and never made me feel treated. Cis men, yes, constantly, would never want a trans woman to have to use male toilets.

How do you tell the difference between the people you define as 'cis' and 'trans'? How are you judging their identities?

Maybe a majority of the people he associates with but not a majority of the general population. Burnham would be a disaster, Reform must be clapping their hands at the prospect.

This.

It's a snap shot isn't it. If you're stupid enough to go along with the delusion it says a lot about your intelligence, common sense and ability to lead a country.
