Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Morrisons used to do a gluten free chocolate orange wafer which was divine! Stopped doing them several years ago - I put in a complaint as there’s not much nice in the way of gluten free treats and that was one of the best. I used to go to Morrisons specifically just for them.
Also back in the day - 60’s/70’s they used to do heart shaped vanilla/raspberry ripple ice creams covered in thin chocolate on a stick - they were the best!
i used to be quite partial to a Birds Eye rissole too

Mummyof2andthatsenough · 06/05/2026 08:16

I read this as "craving discounted foods" and I was like yup! Me too! Everything is so expensive now 😭

Omg Brannigans roast beef and mustard crisps were one of the reasons I put on so much weight in my early 20s! I gave up smoking and took up snacking. I used to buy 6-8 packs every day, pour them into a bowl and eat them in front of the telly. Who even does that? I did see them a while back in Farmfoods (but I ignored them, bloody addictive things!)

A Mackintosh Golden Cup. The absolute king of chocolate bars. I regularly check whether they’re being brought back as there are often campaigns for it.

There was nothing like it. In my memory it was an expensive treat, closely followed by Munchies.
Golden Cup - dreamy chocolate, melting caramel.

PistachioTiramisu · 06/05/2026 09:03

So many memories of lost treasures! It makes you wonder why the manufacturers regularly discontinue products which they know are popular only to be replaced by inferior products with nasty ingredients. It beats me why they do it!

A couple more of my favourites were M&S Summer Berry Charlotte from around 6-7 years ago - looked homemade and could pass for homemade with a few extra strawberries! - and Sainsbury's original jam doughnuts from the bakery - the best doughnuts ever - now a shadow of their former self!

SinisterGreenMan · 06/05/2026 09:07

Dark chocolate Bounty.

deeahgwitch · 06/05/2026 09:37

M&S darker milk chocolate with dried raspberries bar.
Why oh why did they get rid of it.
They also did dried fruit dipped in the most delicious milk chocolate.
Gone too.
Feckers 😀
Also Tesco did an own brand Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter bar. Utterly delicious.
But now gone too ☹️

rainbowunicorn22 · 06/05/2026 09:47

Special K with red fruits and chocolate bits it was dear even then but really nice. Now i can only find boxes with either red fruits or chocolate yes i could mix them but they are so dear its ridiculous

ACIGC · 06/05/2026 09:47

When I was little I used to go with my gran to a cafe and I used to order this green fizzy pop in a little bottle and it was called Space Special. Think it was probably made by Ben Shaws. I liked it because it turned your mouth all green. It was probably vile and god knows what was in it but small child me loved it.

I fear even if they brought it back, they’d use the disgusting waxy, over sweetened, plastic chocolate we have today.

Gemqueen58 · 06/05/2026 10:40

Rondello biscuits

Toffee and mallow eggs 😭

Oh yes, I still look for them every year 😔

SinisterGreenMan · 06/05/2026 09:07

Dark chocolate Bounty.

Have they stopped making them? I can’t stand the wish washy milk chocolate ones. No wonder I can’t find them.

BIWI · 06/05/2026 10:59

Sweetheart Dessert. A tin of fruit syrup, with real fruit pieces. You poured it into a bowl and added cold milk, which thickened it into a sort-of custard.

It was delicious, but disappeared some time in the 70s or 80s. No-one else ever seems to remember it.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 06/05/2026 11:01

I miss Rice Creamola, as a kid it was a Saturday treat. I last tracked it down in Sainsbury’s about 20 years ago. It was a far tastier and golden version of semolina.

PaintNPaper · 06/05/2026 11:05

changedusername190 · 04/05/2026 14:21

Ooh ice magic the stuff which went onto ice cream as a thick chocolate sauce and went solid as soon as it hit the ice cream.

@changedusername190 tesco have a version of this https://www.tesco.com/shop/en-GB/products/251085203

PaintNPaper · 06/05/2026 11:14

Pizazz ice lollies. They were everything in the summer when i was a kid. They were discontinued when i was about 12 :( Also McDonalds Chicken premiers, i still literally dream about them!

A very reasonable fear!

I'm sure when Pot Noodles first came out (mid 80s maybe?) there was a cheese and tomato one. Bloody lovely!

And I still mourn the red Bounty bar...

Also, was there a cereal consisting of little balls? A bit like Golden Grahams, maybe a precursor to those.

Edited

Sounds like Golden Nuggets. They were little balls, at least, they were in the original incarnation. I saw them on sale recently and bought a box to share with the visiting Littles and it's now Golden gravel, sort of flattened pea sized mini chunks . Most disappointing.

Oh lawd that's an addiction right there!! haha. Well done for resisting this time - they've probably taken all the tasty E numbers out of them now anyway! 😂

Just remembered another, fairly recent - fabulous fingers - by cadburys, they were dipped in white then in milk chocolate. I miss them!
