Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Coffee flavoured walnut whips - they were amazing
Fry's chocolate creme the multi-coloured one (can't think what it was called)
Proper Cadburys chocolate before the idiots sold it to an American company that then buggered up all of the recipes

Five centres was the Fry's chocolate bar.
Orig walnut whips were ace that thick chocolate base.

Mint Cracknel and Cheesy Criss Cross my 1980s go to snacks. Actually probably a godsend they no longer exist as both were far from healthy!!!

Maybe someone else has mentioned this by now but you should be able to get a close relative of Mint Cracknel at an international grocery shop. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppermint_Crisp

Curry sauce flavour and pickled onion flavour fish n chips (baked snacks)

YourTaupeReader · 05/05/2026 20:50

i miss the old non vegan fruit pastilles and the syrup sponge you got in a tin, now it’s all dry and stodgy in a packet :(

Nelly91 · 05/05/2026 20:53

Marble chocolate bars!

Definitely Phileas Fogg snacks. And Nobby’s Nuts.

I went vegan a couple of years ago but missed a few things. For a while Squeaky Bean did a Spanish style Tortilla and fake smoked salmon. Now discontinued.

I liked the pretend salmon.

Also the m&s tofu and cress sandwich was awesome

It's a vegetarian thing, but M&S used to sell, many years ago, a roasted Mediterranean vegetable sandwich on a kind of malty bread with sundried tomatoes in it. I realise it doesn't sound very nice, but it was beautiful.

I remember that...yes, it was good!

TheWytch · 05/05/2026 21:05

I miss Dr Pepper so much! It was an occasional treat but they all have sweeteners in them now so I can't have one

YouCantHandleTheRuth · 05/05/2026 21:06

I miss Cadbury's Ice Breaker bars - chocolate bar with splinters if mint crisp.

I also miss Sara Lee puddings, particularly the Pecan Danish Pie and Chocolate Danish Loaf.

RuudGullitOnAShed · 05/05/2026 21:07

M&S used to do a lemon meringue cookie - you could eat it as a cookie or warm it and have it with ice cream. It was delicious - I still scan the shelves in the hope it will one day make a return

2to5 · 05/05/2026 21:08

Ragu white lasagne sauce only recently disappeared, I found it in farmfoods but now has gone from there too, all the others are too cheesy, fuming

2to5 · 05/05/2026 21:09

Birds eye used to do a boil in the bag minced beef in gravy it had peas and little cubed carrots in and was delicious

Pretty sure there's a Dolmio version.

2to5 · 05/05/2026 21:10

Birds eye feozen white rice with peas oniins and mushrooms in, I used to have it on its own with ketchup!

CuppaAndABiccie · 05/05/2026 21:18

PanYan Pickle. Discontinued decades ago, but I can still clearly remember the delicious gingery taste, a vital addition to a cheese sandwich 😋

Yes I think walnut whips are still around, I'm sure I got some for my Mum not that long ago - might have been a daft price on Amazon though!

Walnut whips available at B&M!

ErinBell01 · 05/05/2026 21:26

Lidl used to do a dark chilli chocolate that was excellent. I put in a complaint when they stopped selling it and they promised me it would be back soon - but that was years ago!

ThirtysomethingMummy · 05/05/2026 21:29

This is random..when I was a student, I used to go to spud-u-like and have the prawn jacket with a little pot of julienne salad. I had no money and this felt like a massive treat 🤣
still think of it now!!

cafe noir biscuits from booths, potato triangles and other salty snacks from Sainsbury's were delicious if they bring them back I'm buying a box of them. That chocolate bar with white and milk chocolate swirled together and squash with sugar I cant have sweeteners they upset my stomach and make me hyper.

You can still buy cafe noir biscuits in supermarkets in mainland Europe. I live in the Netherlands and buy them regularly. SO GOOD 🤤

Angelil · 05/05/2026 21:36

OH and Pot Noodle used to do an Indian range (lurid purple/pink tubs) that were rice rather than noodles. I loved them (they were probably jacked to the hilt with MSG but oh well)
