Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

1000 replies

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Dark chocolate hobnobs are sadly missed.

Also still available in mainland Europe

GellerYeller · 05/05/2026 21:40

Dark chocolate rolos. In a sharing bag- these must have been a limited edition as they weren’t around long.
Wrigleys Extra Chewy Mints. Came in a blue packet and were like skittles but different flavours of blue, white and green coloured mints: spearmint and butter mint, I think. Delicious.
Does anyone remember Turkestan bread from Morrisons in the 90s, really soft dark seeded bread, came in a red wrapper, and I think it had honey in?

WhatJustHappenedCelia · 05/05/2026 21:40

Spiras

M&S summer fruit pudding

and most random - Heinz baked bean pizza!

Turtleyturtles · 05/05/2026 21:42

Bacos bits. They were crunchy, salty, bacon flavoured bits to put on dishes like scrambled eggs. There are similar products now but they are nowhere near as good. The crunch was amazing!

Ooh ice magic the stuff which went onto ice cream as a thick chocolate sauce and went solid as soon as it hit the ice cream.

Ah finally something I remember. Think there was a raspberry/ strawberry one aldo

They’re mentioned in a book called The Glass Mountain by Martina Evans in Ireland in 70s, Ices.

icy cups!! You can buy them online. Lovely!

GellerYeller · 05/05/2026 21:50

I remember orange, mint and chocolate ice magic. I’m pretty sure M and S do something similar now.

WhatJustHappenedCelia · 05/05/2026 21:53

Oh and M&S used to sell little ham and cream cheese whirls/pinwheels about the size of a 50p, they were divine! Tried to recreate them but they’re just not the same!!

ICoriander · 05/05/2026 21:58

McDonald’s hot caramel sundae!

These were amazing. No one else does anything like them and I really miss them 😭

Cheese McCoy’s. So much better than the modern-day cheese and onion interlopers

Oooh yes! I’d forgotten these! They were lovely.

Also, Toffee Crumble ice cream/lolly, Toffee Pops biscuits.

And, somewhat contentiously, Bloater Paste… I used to love that on hot buttered toast!

Yes Topics are gone.

Decent drinks and their taste ruined by Jamie Oliver's 'No sugar' campaign.

Aspartame is chemical crap. At least, we know sugar is natural and organic.

I’m so happy someone else remembers them! My Gran used to put them in my lunch box for school and it was such a treat. When we grew up my friend and I always had them as a staple at any party/get together and were gutted when they stopped selling them!

WhatJustHappenedCelia · 05/05/2026 22:05

There used to be a cheese spread called Cheddary that was really nice but I’ve never seen it for years!

Borborygmus · 05/05/2026 22:07

Peek Freans Barmouth biscuits.

RS1987 · 05/05/2026 22:07

Haven’t read the thread but I’ll never ever get over Sara Lee Chocolate Gateaux

RS1987 · 05/05/2026 22:08

ICoriander · 05/05/2026 21:58

McDonald’s hot caramel sundae!

YES Mcflurries are inferior

BurtsBeefCrisps · 05/05/2026 22:12

Also Cheese Moments, every time I see those bloody Scampi fries and the bacon version I feel furious that Moments have been removed!
Also the coconut Boost.

Agree. Too many fizzy drinks just give me UTI-type symptoms nowadays. Probably a combination of my age and the sweeteners which I believe just pass straight through the body. I just drink water.

I refer to my previous post re Abbey Crunch and the scar their disconuation left on my soul. Now someone mentions Barmouth biscuits. I had totally forgotten them but they were probably second in my biscuit hierarchy. I am now doubly sad. Apparently a bakery in Wales does them at vast expense.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/05/2026 19:25

Sainsbury used to do a delicious ice-cream , peanut butter flavour with swirls of caramel and chocolate crisp wafer.
<sniff>

Whatever happened to Tutti Frutti ice cream? It just disappeared.

Hicks123 · 05/05/2026 22:25

Sarah Lee pecan pie. I loved it. Also scampi and lemon Nik Naks but I found out they still sell them in a different area of the UK!!

Cleanlines · 05/05/2026 22:27

PPs have mentioned but Cafe Noir biscuits, Flyte bars which were like original Milky Ways.

I miss the Shapers Strawberry Bars and always look in Boots on the off chance.
