Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Showing my age now but when I was a child my mum used to serve up a tinned steamed .mixed fruit sponge with custard...maybe HEINZ made it....it was delicious.

Heinz did a chocolate pudding in a tin in the early 2000s, possibly into the 2010s? I often crave it with custard. The other microwave chocolate puddings available these days just don’t taste the same.

I loved the treacle sponge pudding one!!

Grandmistress991 · 05/05/2026 19:55

The cracknell that used to come in Quality Street in the good old days before they ruined the taste with plastic chocolate.

Lucozade was wonderful when it was in glass bottles with a cellophane wrapper.

Takes me back to being a child lying on the settee on our living room. Drinking a glass of proper Lucozade to help my sore throat.

Also used to have a daily spoonful of rose hip syrup. Delish.

Ooh, I was just thinking about them. They were delicious, wish you could still get them 😋

The used to be part of a Vesta meal in the late '60s!

Cadbury’s Animal biscuits when they were a decent size and the chocolate was 70’s.
Findus French Bread pizza - the very thing we got when we got a fridge with one of those tiny freezer compartments.
M&S Angel cake
M&S salmon and cucumber sandwiches - a recent loss and I miss them.
Our local Wimpy used to do thick toast with butter.
Remember when you used to buy a loaf and it said thick slices and you got… thick slices!

My mum worked at the factory that made cakes for M&S. We had lots of deformed/rejected Angel cakes when I was growing up. She could buy them in the staff shop for 10 or 20p. I preferred the coffee and walnut one.

Sainsbury used to do a delicious ice-cream , peanut butter flavour with swirls of caramel and chocolate crisp wafer.
<sniff>

They used to do chocolate tear and share bread, delicious, our weekend treat, so decadent.

Macinae · 05/05/2026 20:05

Cadbury marble chocolate bar
Mingles chocolates. They were a Christmas staple
Topic chocolate bar

It's a vegetarian thing, but M&S used to sell, many years ago, a roasted Mediterranean vegetable sandwich on a kind of malty bread with sundried tomatoes in it. I realise it doesn't sound very nice, but it was beautiful.

Was it on tomato bread?

Cabana chocolate bars. They were discontinued in the 90’s and were a yummy mix of coconut, caramel and cherry.

I also used to love Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream back in the 90’s. It was vanilla malt ice cream, peanut fudge-covered pretzels, and both fudge and peanut butter swirls. I just checked and you can still get it in the US but not the UK. Sad times.

while we are talking about Ben and Jerry, Cherry Garcia FroYo.

Sarawithoutah · 05/05/2026 20:16

So many for me: Fruit polos, toffos, mint wispa bars, Cadburys dream bars. I also loved mars bar muffins.

SharkPants · 05/05/2026 20:17

I can't remember the name, but I do remember fondly that Knorr used to make these little cubes which you could add to pasta. I used to think I was quite the chef when I began adding ham. I was about 15. I was very sad when they were discontinued.
I also wrote to McDonald's once when the changed the original vegetarian burger. I still think about those burgers at times...

Crispy noodles, hard bits of yellow looking plastic that you fried and they curled up, came is a ready meal from the 70’s.

Those are something you can get in Indian supermakets. They come in a mixed pack of colours, they're a popular snack. One of my Indian colleagues fried a bag up and brought them in for a try everyone elses treats day. He was really surprised they were so popular!

Was it on tomato bread?

Yes, I think so ,little bits of sundried tomato and maybe a bit of onion? And there was a bit of dressing that wasn't mayo or cheese or hummus, trying to think what it was.

KathLeanne · 05/05/2026 20:21

Amongst other things - I used to love Waitrose’s Goulash soup. I really miss it 😢 It was so delicious and filling.

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 05/05/2026 20:22

Oooh some good ones here!

Beanfeast (I think) vegetarian bolognaise in the blue packet.

Mr Kipling large Bakewell Tart

BooneyBeautiful · 05/05/2026 20:23

Ice Breaker chocolate bars.

They came with Vesta Chow Mein.

Littlesarou · 05/05/2026 20:25

So many amazing nostalgic snacks! Agree secret and spiral, both were delicious, i still miss cadburys astros and fuse bars plus Terrys pyramid and blitz bars! Probably just as well they are all discontinued - my metabolism isnt what it was 🤣
I also have to throw in 5-4-3-2-1 bars - never really liked them but my mum would bring me one collecting me from school on p/t days she worked so would be a few minutes late getting me before we went to collect my sister aslong as i promised to keep it a secret, i always felt v smug and special where as she just was trying to stop me getting hangry, clever lady!

Alexcan17 · 05/05/2026 20:26

I used to love Giovanni's tutti fruiti icecream, I think it came in a round tub probably from Sainsbury's in the 90s when I was a child/teen - still miss it, I dont understand why you never see tutti fruiti icecream anymore it is the best flavour!

Was it on tomato bread?

I used to work for M&S many moons ago, and i think i remember that sandwich, actually.

SaltyDragon · 05/05/2026 20:32

Coffee flavoured walnut whips - they were amazing
Fry's chocolate creme the multi-coloured one (can't think what it was called)
Proper Cadburys chocolate before the idiots sold it to an American company that then buggered up all of the recipes

Read the whole thread hoping someone would've said Bachelor's mushroom and white wine pasta.

This is mine too! I absolutely loved it and I still miss it. I’m not even a mushroom fan but this was so nice.

I also miss the M&S chococcino muffins! Really loved those, and echo bars!
