Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

C-vit. There was a Ribena that was very similar. Both good but now 'replaced' by some shite with aspartame in it.

Phinneas Fogg snacks like Pains Perdus.

I used to love C Vit

Me too. If I had a cold, a hot C-Vit was my go to remedy.

Proper Ribena and old school panda cherryade.
cannot get anything that doesn’t taste fake anymore!

So true! Glad to have grown up in the age of chocolate spread sandwiches and a penguin in my lunch box for school haha. Good times. 10p Panda pop and a chomp bar. Aaaah. The days of proper cheapo crap :)

Riceicles, non such toffees from Sainsbury’s little toffees with a Brazil nut on top, cheese buttons, potato triangles

ACR7 · 04/05/2026 14:15

sunny delight before they removed the additives. Might have been horrendous for you but my god was it delicious

Iamthemoom · 04/05/2026 14:17

Mint Cracknel and Cheesy Criss Cross my 1980s go to snacks. Actually probably a godsend they no longer exist as both were far from healthy!!!

Crispy noodles, hard bits of yellow looking plastic that you fried and they curled up, came is a ready meal from the 70’s.

Haha remember the girl who turned orange from overconsumption of it? Oh lordy, life used to be so much more fun (well probably not but pre-social media was great when you had to work out if Carol from up the road was talking bollocks before you could see the newspapers or watch the news!)

I remember the brand name but can't place the snacks! Semolina - well, horses for courses I guess, I'm pretty sure many would be horrified at my seafood pizza!!

Mignons Morceaux. Little garlic breads, absolutely delicious, I really miss them.

Ooh ice magic the stuff which went onto ice cream as a thick chocolate sauce and went solid as soon as it hit the ice cream.

Coop used to do a plain chocolate rich tea biscuit. It was a treat I was only able to afford occasionally as a student, and I would make them last ages.

Edwardbear1 · 04/05/2026 14:22

Cadburys Spria bars were elite 😭😭😭

Ovaltine bars. Think I last had one in the eighties. Was thrilled to discover Milo bars are really similar and stock up if I’m ever in Asia for work

Still available everywhere in Switzerland in a wide range of styles including Ovalmatine chocolate eggs, bars, 'branches', nuggets, biscuits, a spread I think, etc..., etc...

MrsShawnHatosy · 04/05/2026 14:23

Cheese potato waffles, Birds Eye. Fabulous as part of a cooked breakfast, the plain ones are not the same.

Aha thank you - they were so good (I had to sneak them when my mum wasn't looking as they were for the grown ups! haha)

They used to be part of a Vesta Chow Mein.

As a 12 year old I thought I was being majorly exotic, cooking that!

ThisChirpyLemonUser · 04/05/2026 14:23

cafe noir biscuits from booths, potato triangles and other salty snacks from Sainsbury's were delicious if they bring them back I'm buying a box of them. That chocolate bar with white and milk chocolate swirled together and squash with sugar I cant have sweeteners they upset my stomach and make me hyper.

missingthemidlands · 04/05/2026 14:25

Milky bar choos.

They were small and fudgey and I even emailed nestle once asking if they’d ever come back.

Witchonenowbob · 04/05/2026 14:26

Toast toppers

ButterYellowHair · 04/05/2026 14:26

Greggs used to do a chocolate coated doughnut stuffed with a sweetened whipped cream in the 00s and it was divine. Whenever I was ill the only thing is eat was that doughnut as a kid.

They later replaced it with a doughnut of the same name that was shit.

Lucozade was wonderful when it was in glass bottles with a cellophane wrapper.

The Scottish version was Fergusade. It was worth being ill just to have a glass.
