Only knickers in the Co-op

1981RickyVilla · 12/04/2026 18:02

A teenage girl (aged 15 or 16, roughly) in front of me in the Co-op was wearing a crop-top and a pair of knickers only. Not bikini bottoms, not short shorts but cotton M & S midi style knickers. I didn’t say anything (none of my business and she probably wouldn’t have approved my sartorial choices either). If I had been her mother, seeing her before she left the house, I would have said that it looked unhygienic and wasn’t an appropriate way to go to the shops.
YABU: People of whatever age can dress how they like when they go to the Co-op.
YANBU: A mini-skirt or pair of shorts are a minimum requirement when you’re off to the shops.

Arses DO hang out.

When young men wear their jeans below their bottom so that the whole of their underwear covered bottom is shown above the jeans waistband, that is hanging out.

When a woman wears a skirt in which her bum cheeks are visible beneath the hemline, that is hanging out.

Both are fashionable and common sights near me.

^ the skirt one is not hanging out. The mens jeans one is hanging out, I agree. But no one seems to criticise men here, it’s all about women.

Why should people have to look away and risk tripping up and breaking a bone because some gormless individual thinks its appropriate to leave their arse hanging out?
Just put some clothes on FFS

If you look down at the pavement, you won’t trip up.

He’s saying his discomfort is worse because he is a man, thereby centreing himself.

You really don’t need to stare at a woman’s bottom, you can look away, your eyes have the ability to swivel. And arses don’t hang out.

Honestly I do feel for decent men sometimes - unbelievably there are a few.

I think there's only one person in this scenario 'centring' themselves and that's the person who thinks it's OK to walk round a supermarket in underwear.

If they’re decent men, they can do what the Bible advises to do - guard your gaze (I.e. look away)

This isn’t a new problem, it’s been around for thousands of years, the dear widdle
men can cope.

So do what the Bible says and look away. You don’t need to move seats to avert your gaze, just turn your head 90 degrees and look out of the window.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/04/2026 13:05

If I found out my son or daughter was doing that there would be no internet for the rest of the year. WTF!!!

likelysuspect · 13/04/2026 13:06

Why is the Bible being used as some sort of solution here?

People should just be appropriately dressed. Everyone knows what that means.

Back in the real world nonone wants to see my fat wobbly arse

I forgot, many years ago in my mid twenties I bought a floral tie waist blouse which was cropped. I wore it into the office with normal waisted trousers so was only showing a strip of midriff. I got sent home by the office manager for inappropriate clothing. Funnily enough the boss didn’t mind and his son who also worked there thought it was fine. Was huge architects with 100 or more staff. So lots of men.

Another time in another architects the office manager told me off and said she could see what I’d had for dinner. I didn’t really wear short skirts though. Or revealing clothing.

Another time walking to a station my rucksack had pulled my knee length dress up at the back so knickers were showing and I hadn’t noticed. But I wore tights anyway. A kind man gave me a heads up about it.

I'm not quite that old, but sometimes I'd like to go back to the fashions of the 50s...

Same here. The clothes and hairstyles were amazing. The ladies always looked so elegant and sophisticated.

Not half their bare flesh on display

No but you could possibly bump into person in front of you and both end upon the floor

First you compared young teens girls to flashers, when that didn’t work, you’re comparing them to profanity/offence.It doesn’t work. Women’s bodies are not profane.

Again, there are public decency laws to deal with this.

Fair enough, I don't think we're going to agree on this. Of course human bodies are not profane, but certain parts of them are agreed by most people in our society to be private.

I'm of the opinion that everybody should dress in public so that those parts are not on display, as a basic standard of decency. If you don't think that private parts should be covered in public, then of course you're entitled to your opinion.

Yes, there are laws against this, but there are laws against lots of things that never seem to be enforced. It doesn't help when people who do raise a concern are called ridiculous, voyeurs and are blamed for 'looking'. And how on earth would you go about reporting somebody walking through the street indecently dressed, when they would be long gone by the time the police arrived (the same police who say they don't have time to turn up for shoplifters)?

SoulFood · 13/04/2026 13:53

Dogpootwo · 12/04/2026 20:25

I saw a girl today walking through a shopping centre. Her skirt was halfway up her buttocks. You could see her actual bum cheeks and I won’t go into detail but I do not believe the girl was aware of what she was exposing. I think people look down and see their clothes but don’t see it from the angle they will be seen in.
I felt bad for her and for some reason I didn’t tell her because I was wary of being seen as shaming her. But hopefully she will be told by a friend.

I was at a busy London station, and a girl in front of me (20s) had a ruck sack on, but her dress had been pulled up by it exposing her knickers. I told her because well her knickers were on show. She got really annoyed with me!! I was even in Uniform, not just a random passenger! Ah well!

Wearing just knickers is one step on from wearing PJs to the M&S shop at the petrol station. Fucking grim!

Littlewasp · 13/04/2026 14:02

Just seen similar in Chester railway station, young girl wearing what looked like a pair of black knickers and holey fishnet tights, arse cheeks on display, I was stunned!

I’ve never said private parts shouldn’t be covered. Why do you think that’s my opinion?

You can report people breaching public decency laws in the same way you report flashers.

Again, I have repeatedly said that I’m a conservative dresser who wears full sleeved, ankle length, crew neck clothing. I just don’t buy the view that you can’t look away from scantily clad women’s bodies and the derogatory way people talk about women’s bodies is jarring. You absolutely can look away.

Be careful using such descriptive language about your own arse, there are people on this thread who will accuse you of getting off on it!

Allseeingallknowing · 13/04/2026 14:27

nomas · 13/04/2026 12:35

Not sure why you think it's ok for young teens/women to walk around half naked.

Can you quote where I have said this? I’ve repeatedly said I’m a conservative dresser. I usually wear full sleeved, crew neck, down to ankle clothes.

I just hate the derogatory way women talk about girls’ bodies here (jiggling arse cheeks, arses hanging out, etc) and the idea that they HAVE to look, they can’t possibly be expected to look away.

Even the Bible says men (which includes women) should guard their gaze:

  • Matthew 5:28 (The Core Verse): Jesus states, "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart". This teaching shifts the focus from just external actions (physical adultery) to internal intentions and desires.
  • Job’s Covenant (Job 31:1): Job is presented as a model of righteousness for saying, "I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman". This implies a voluntary, proactive decision to avoid gazing at a woman's body with desire.

I imagine 99% of men have committed adultery, then!

I think your post had a point. Why do these men think it’s worse them? Just look away.

Men are more likely to be accused of being a ‘perv’ if they accidentally glance at said bare arse. And a key word is accidentally. I work with young people and they’re forever calling men ‘pervs’ or ‘peados’ with little to no justification.

It’s very difficult not to see when they’re going upstairs in the bus. I imagine it’s difficult for school teachers too!

Haha I got in the shit once for showing literally the tiniest strip of midriff (and only really when I reached up!!) from my manager at the time… a woman who wore really short skirts and bent over desks constantly showing her arse, who kept pens and pencils down her cleavage to the point it was a running joke with both colleagues and customers and who, on any given day, you knew what bra she had on because her tops were so low cut 😂 the hypocrisy made me livid 😂
