Only knickers in the Co-op

A teenage girl (aged 15 or 16, roughly) in front of me in the Co-op was wearing a crop-top and a pair of knickers only. Not bikini bottoms, not short shorts but cotton M & S midi style knickers. I didn’t say anything (none of my business and she probably wouldn’t have approved my sartorial choices either). If I had been her mother, seeing her before she left the house, I would have said that it looked unhygienic and wasn’t an appropriate way to go to the shops.
YABU: People of whatever age can dress how they like when they go to the Co-op.
YANBU: A mini-skirt or pair of shorts are a minimum requirement when you’re off to the shops.

I literally have nightmares about doing the same myself, mortifying. I think that when I see Kanye West's wife in the press, she is often nearly naked. I saw teenage girls with tiny denim shorts on the other day, I said to my daughter does she have her zip undone on purpose? She said yes lots of teenagers do it!!! Oh dear

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 12/04/2026 20:34

I think it's preferable to the girls that walk around on just fishnets and thongs and a skirt that ends before their arse starts.
I'd love for some of them to just put on some knickers

DripDripAprilshower · 12/04/2026 20:39

How do they they honestly ever expect to be taken seriously?

This.

I’ve got to the point where I treat people based on how they present themselves to me.

RunAwayWithMeeee · 12/04/2026 20:45

Sadly I think this is normal now, there was two women walking round my town centre like this the other day, both pushing prams, I just said to my kids looks like they forgot their trousers 😂

weareallqueens · 12/04/2026 20:45

I wonder if it’s just an extension of the pjs in the shops thing. If you’re just wearing knickers and a top to bed then you get out of bed and go to the coop in it, as you would your pyjamas.

HelenaWilson · 12/04/2026 20:47

A while ago I saw a girl in M&S Food Hall who was wearing just a black lacy bra on her top half. She was carrying her zip up top, so I assume she was wearing it when she left the house.

M&S Food Halls are usually quite chilly; she must have had goose pimples. And why choose M&S Food Hall to appear in your bra?

The bra wasn't very revealing, but it was definitely a bra, not a bikini top or crop top.

But it was better than seeing someone's knickers on display.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/04/2026 20:49

I thought thread meant they were selling knickers

But anyway it was quite chilly and windy today where I live so must have been cold

I saw a girl today walking through a shopping centre. Her skirt was halfway up her buttocks. You could see her actual bum cheeks and I won’t go into detail but I do not believe the girl was aware of what she was exposing. I think people look down and see their clothes but don’t see it from the angle they will be seen in.
I felt bad for her and for some reason I didn’t tell her because I was wary of being seen as shaming her. But hopefully she will be told by a friend.

I saw a young woman like that on the bus in January- it was freezing! Her legs went up to her armpits, what little clothing she was wearing was in black, her long hair was black, short sleeved jacket and her skirt was so short it stopped just short of the bottom of her bum. Nothing at all left to the imagination. She was tall and her platform shoes made her even taller.

It’s stuck in my mind because she was quite stunning. She got off at the stop for the local college and she strode out loud and proud. It doesn’t last long. Good luck to her.

Unhygienic?

This thread is giving me vibes of the OP bloke who keeps coming on here starting threads about underwear.

Owly11 · 12/04/2026 21:05

I thought this was going to be a thread about an emergency run to the co-op to buy knickers and that they only had one type of knickers, which were unsuitable, and that op was complaining that they ought to sell a range of knickers and I was thinking 'oh our co-op doesn't sell knickers at all so op should think herself lucky that at least they had one type' 😂

AccordingToWhom · 12/04/2026 21:11

How do you know they were M&S knickers and not say, some ASOS or TEMU 'outerwear that looks like underwear' creation?

Dollymylove · 12/04/2026 21:18

Cue the "young girls can dress as they like even if their fanny is hanging out" brigade.
Its a shame that they havent been taught respect for their own bodies
I'll get my coat

Yep.

Ritaskitchen · 12/04/2026 21:31

They are called scundies - underpants and shorts mashed together

Now THAT sounds unhygienic.

WhatNextImScared · 12/04/2026 21:36

I don’t think they are actually knickers. They are shorts that just very much like a pair of knickers. It’s not my style, but it’s also not my business how a random person chooses to dress. As long as they’re not actually naked in Tesco, there’s not much you can do about (nor should there be).

pouletvous · 12/04/2026 21:52

She must have been cold 😂

Unfortunate if the pants were flesh coloured! One old fashioned word sums it up - vulgar!

itsmeagainagain · 12/04/2026 21:59

if my teenage daughter tried to go out of the house like this I'd take my trousers off and follow her up the road - that would be the end of that I think!😂

HelenaWilson · 12/04/2026 22:03

Unfortunate if the pants were flesh coloured!

I was once walking along the street behind someone who really did look as if she had nothing on her bottom half. When I got closer I could see she was wearing flesh coloured leggings with a short jacket.

noodlezoodle · 12/04/2026 22:12

I can't even picture this! (And I don't want to). Can't believe this isn't a one off and several people have seen the same.

Naked in Tesco.

Only knickers in the Co-op.

I dread to think of the underwear antics in Aldi and Lidl.

Presumably the naice people will be wearing their thermal vests and matching bloomers in Waitrose and M&S.

I didn’t check the label! I was just trying to give an impression of what they looked like. They didn’t seem like outerwear. I think that the early posters had it right and that it is a look that I wasn’t aware of. I am a 57-year-old mother of three sons in their 20s. I don’t think that they should go to the Co-op in their pants, either.

Well you definitely shouldn't comment because what would you say and to what end?
