Only knickers in the Co-op

A teenage girl (aged 15 or 16, roughly) in front of me in the Co-op was wearing a crop-top and a pair of knickers only. Not bikini bottoms, not short shorts but cotton M & S midi style knickers. I didn’t say anything (none of my business and she probably wouldn’t have approved my sartorial choices either). If I had been her mother, seeing her before she left the house, I would have said that it looked unhygienic and wasn’t an appropriate way to go to the shops.
YABU: People of whatever age can dress how they like when they go to the Co-op.
YANBU: A mini-skirt or pair of shorts are a minimum requirement when you’re off to the shops.

I'm a late 50s hetero woman and I feel uncomfortable when I see someone half dressed in the street, not turned on or anything. I can see how it makes men uncomfortable and for them it's worse as inadvertenly 'copping an eyeful' is going to make them look like a dirty old man.

My heart bleeds for them! Honestly both sexes, regardless of age, just don't look. I don't look at strangers arses when they're clothed so why should I when they're in undies and it's displeasing to me?

It’s very difficult not to see when they’re going upstairs in the bus. I imagine it’s difficult for school teachers too!

Just look at the stairs, that’s where you should be looking for safety anyway.

Same here. The clothes and hairstyles were amazing. The ladies always looked so elegant and sophisticated.

Not half their bare flesh on display

The real 1950s were baggy floral dresses under thick coats, flat shoes and headscarves or felt hats pulled over rigid perms ...

... Teenagers were changing all that, though. Some images are 1940s.

If you catch sight of bum cheeks hanging out of a pair of knickers, then it is too late to ‘not look’ as lots of PPs say is the way to behave. The vast majority of people wouldn’t go on to deliberately stare, but you have already made a judgement in that split second, whether it is a negative or positive judgement.

Not sure why you think it's ok for young teens/women to walk around half naked.

Can you quote where I have said this? I’ve repeatedly said I’m a conservative dresser. I usually wear full sleeved, crew neck, down to ankle clothes.

I just hate the derogatory way women talk about girls’ bodies here (jiggling arse cheeks, arses hanging out, etc) and the idea that they HAVE to look, they can’t possibly be expected to look away.

Even the Bible says men (which includes women) should guard their gaze:

  • Matthew 5:28 (The Core Verse): Jesus states, "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart". This teaching shifts the focus from just external actions (physical adultery) to internal intentions and desires.
  • Job’s Covenant (Job 31:1): Job is presented as a model of righteousness for saying, "I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman". This implies a voluntary, proactive decision to avoid gazing at a woman's body with desire.

Thank goodness the Bible doesn't say anything about looking at men lustfully or I'd have to give myself 50 lashes 😂

Thanks for this. The trend must be more ubiquitous than I had thought!

Just seen similar in Chester railway station, young girl wearing what looked like a pair of black knickers and holey fishnet tights, arse cheeks on display, I was stunned!

I've seen a few women like this - it seems to be a goth-type 'look'. Openwork black tights and a 'skirt' (tartan or leather) that only just about reaches to the bottom of the pelvis/bum cheeks, so when walking around, their bum cheeks and knickers are visible. I think it looks awful, as if the skirt is about four sizes too small and they've squeezed themselves into it.

As the skirts often resemble belts there might be no improvement!

Allseeingallknowing · 13/04/2026 19:16

Surely walking around showing almost everything comes under a public decency offence?

Wow, it's one thing checking that your outfit passes muster when off to the opera or a fancy restaurant; but imagine having to stand there checking whether you're dressed enough to go into your local convenience store!

I suppose the only thing might be that, technically, according to that notice, you're not allowed in if you're wearing jeans or other full-length trousers. I guess it should be obvious that that is perfectly fine; but then, if they need to tell people in the first place, it's probably not safe to assume that anything along those lines is obvious...

Even so, it will still likely fail, as the first rule of signs is that the only people who ever notice or bother to read them are those for whom no sign was ever needed in the first place.

I'm of the opinion that everybody should dress in public so that those parts are not on display, as a basic standard of decency. If you don't think that private parts should be covered in public, then of course you're entitled to your opinion.

I’ve never said private parts shouldn’t be covered. Why do you think that’s my opinion?

Yes, there are laws against this, but there are laws against lots of things that never seem to be enforced. It doesn't help when people who do raise a concern are called ridiculous, voyeurs and are blamed for 'looking'.
And how on earth would you go about reporting somebody walking through the street indecently dressed, when they would be long gone by the time the police arrived (the same police who say they don't have time to turn up for shoplifters)?

You can report people breaching public decency laws in the same way you report flashers.

Again, I have repeatedly said that I’m a conservative dresser who wears full sleeved, ankle length, crew neck clothing. I just don’t buy the view that you can’t look away from scantily clad women’s bodies and the derogatory way people talk about women’s bodies is jarring. You absolutely can look away.

I’ve never said private parts shouldn’t be covered. Why do you think that’s my opinion?

Because lots of people on this thread have been saying about the frequent unwelcome sightings of women and girls showing off their bums in public, and you've been doggedly asserting that nobody should feel they have the right to tell anybody that they shouldn't be doing this.

And yes, I know that bums are not genitals, but they are commonly considered private parts of the body; even tiny little children know about the Pants Rule, where nobody (other than parents/carers/doctors) should see or touch any part of your body that is covered by your briefs.

Maybe I'm an anomaly of nature, but my eyes have a natural full field of vision, meaning that they automatically capture the wider spectrum of my view as well as whatever I'm specifically concentrating on.

Yes there was a thread about school girls wearing barely there skirts with their buttocks on display a while ago. A surprising amount of PPs didnt think it was a problem 🙄

When have I even once said nobody should feel they have this right, let alone doggedly?

AnneElliott · 13/04/2026 21:17

I remember seeing a bloke walking down the street wearing a pair of Y fronts and an unbuttoned shirt. It was Southend but even so 🤣. My friend’s son kept pointing out rather loudly!

You used to be banned from wearing shorts in Harrods.

Did you tell the boys off for swearing too?

The boys weren’t swearing. But they didn’t need to be n the graveyard making elderly people feel threatened. I knew the boys and believe me they got told their behaviour was unacceptable. Stop changing the context and trying to throw it back on me.

OP didn’t specify when this took place. The weather here has been spring like but still quite cold and windy. It doesn’t seem to deter the teens because as soon as the sun comes out the skimpy outfits appear.

We went on a school trip to London in February. It was very cold. None of the girls had jackets and some were wearing vest tops. I kid you not.

Funny how you didn’t mention the boys being intimidating.

People do feel very brave shouting at young girls though.

Thanks for these. Hilarious that these pictures are not getting any criticism from the posters on this thread, despite the skirts and shorts being so very, very short.

I didn’t say men should look away, I said anyone can look away.

I agree that women being sold the lie that being naked is empowering is hugely damaging but it really is easy for both men and women to look away.

So many women here describing in fetish like detail about women’s arse cheeks jiggling or whatever, it sounds like they enjoy it. Just look away, look at your phone.

Ok thanks I'll try that seeing as it's obviously the eyes in my head that are the problem 🙄
