Do you still have a ‘Hotmail’ email address

flagpolesitta · 28/03/2026 10:57

Keep seeing this mentioned on social media in videos or posts about being old 😳🤣
I have no plans to change my email but lots of people saying they hate giving their email address to people and having to say ‘@ hotmail.com’
I didn’t even realise new emails don’t still use this…

Hotmail.com here too. I only use it for commercial stuff, online shopping etc. I have a different email for personal use. All the spam goes to Hotmail.

Oh I remember those! Never had one, but they actually seemed quite techy!

I had one. This brings back memories 🤓👵🏻

Yes, with my full name, no numbers/special characters, I'm that old 🤣

Same 😂

why is it unprofessional?

I suspect the real reason it’s seen as unprofessional is because it shows your age and the workplace is inherently ageist. If we actually dissected it fully that is, because assuming the email address doesn’t actually contain an emo song lyric, it shouldn’t be seen as unprofessional. But alas, there was a lot of commentary about the use of Hotmail addresses a few years ago and the usual generational abuse around it.

It's a bit like asking someone to connect on Friends Reunited 😁

Not unprofessional but a bit out of touch. I work in marketing and I just wouldn’t ever use an hotmail address. Switched to gmail in 2015ish. I still have access to my hotmail and use it for things like Vinted where you get millions of emails.

And this just kind of proves my point really…

Don't be ageist! I'm nearly 70 and don't use hotmail 🌞

MatronPomfrey · 28/03/2026 12:57

I changed from Hotmail.com to hotmail.co.uk when I got married, 17 years ago. Full name, no numbers or characters. I wasn’t aware it aged me.

That conjures up the sound of visiting my father at the office as a child!

Dbank · 28/03/2026 12:59

My first email address was in 1984! (long since forgotten what it was)

That’s because Boomers still use their internet provider’s domain email address, usually jointly with their spouse Grin [email protected]

(I’m kidding!)

PoorPhaedra · 28/03/2026 13:02

I have a Hotmail address - my full name with no numbers or full stops. Created in 2001. I also have the same mobile phone number that I got in 2002.

Sausagedog256 · 28/03/2026 13:06

Ohfudgeoff · 28/03/2026 11:06

But where else does one get an email address these days, if not Hotmail or AOL?!

Edited

Google- gmail

sunshinestar1986 · 28/03/2026 13:06

I have a yahoo.co.uk
And recently someone said to me, wow only other person that has one 😅

RustyBear · 28/03/2026 13:07

I merged mine with outlook ages ago, but I really only use it for some services I’ve had for years, like Microsoft Office & my phone, because I can’t be bothered to switch them. Newer stuff has one of my various Gmail addresses - for example I have a different one for shopping online from my main one.

blondeascustard · 28/03/2026 13:08

1999 Hotmail.com, with my full name and an underscore. Geriatric millennial wisdom :)

Zov · 28/03/2026 13:09

Yes. Had it 23 years. I have emails going back to 2003. From old penpals, and friends and family members who died a few years ago. Also old emails from my 2 DC when they were primary school aged children, (now both around 30 y.o.) There are old messages, and old photos of us all - from nearly a quarter of a century ago. It's like a little time capsule! Smile

It is hotmail.com.

justiria · 28/03/2026 13:11

Yes! I've had it for years and not planning on changing it

TheFifthTellytubby · 28/03/2026 13:12

So - what other free alternatives are recommended? Free, as it makes poor business sense to pay for something you don't need. Is Gmail also likely to be looked down on in a few years' time? I'm very much of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality, but if my hotmail.com really is causing potential clients to my freelance business to turn up their noses, then I want to know about it. That said, if they're more concerned about my e-mail address than the quality of my work, then maybe I can do without their business...😫

OtherS · 28/03/2026 13:13

Yep, [name][email protected] - prime real estate, that! Mostly just shopping and junk now though, it seems some types of email don't work with it so I wasn't receiving stuff, I can't really use it as my main email anymore. So have @gmail.com, but that's not just my name.

My dad's got an insanely old one from the early or mid-90s. I've never ever encountered anyone else with it, and it's [dad's name]@[surname].[email provider].co.uk. It seems a much better system as it there'd be many more possible addresses, though his emails only download onto his computer and aren't accessible from anywhere, which means if his pc dies (likely) then he'll lose his entire lifetime of emails and contacts. Which is maybe not ideal. He worked in tech too, you'd think he'd have had the sense to move to a better system!

I bow out to HotBot. 😁

Lostanotherscrunchie · 28/03/2026 13:23

I did have a Hotmail account until last week when I asked it to be deleted forever. It was my first name and last name too. (no numbers or special characters)

I also remember my Faceparty username I just wish I could see the profile 🤣

The good old days when it was worth trying anne at hotmail.com before you even added a surname.
