To think all these mothers bragging about working full time are just using their own mothers as unpaid childcare?

I came to this realisation recently after years of being made to feel like a lazy piece of shit by them, because I had my first child when I was 16 and didn’t have a job until they went to school and this is part time.

Once you dig beneath the surface of the full time job, the active social life and weekends, 9 times out of 10 there’s a tired exhausted grandma who just wants some rest!

I’m not. There are others who have children young but outsource everything to their own parents then act like they’re superior for having a better social life or career

what a goady post. And irrelevent to what PP said

Just tell them they don't got the same close relationship with their children as you do. I know many kids who aren't close to their parents because they never spend any time with them. I respect childfree people because they can focus on what they like without having children suffering from lack of bonding with selfabsorbed career parents who treat them like a burden.

What a gross comment. Closeness isnt based on whether you work or not. Non working parents can easily shove a child in front of a TV all day and make up threads on mumsnet about stuff that never happened.

Around where I live it's very common for people to rely heavily on grandparents for childcare. Think grandpa doing all school pickups, grandma having the children every day instead of after school club, being on call if school call because child is ill and needs collecting, grandparents babysitting for nights out or weekend getaways. Yep, in my area grandparents providing regular childcare is definitely the norm.

Personally our nearest family is 4 hours away so it was always DH and me and friends and neighbours. Not bitter, just an observation. People have been getting very snappy and defensive about the OP.

No, I just use paid childcare.

notacooldad · 06/09/2026 17:07

No, knackered grandparent in sight when I was working with young children.
I had an empty bank account though because nurseries and childminders cost a bloody fortune.

People have called me a lazy piece of shit
Seriously? Which people?
I know a few SAHM and in all honesty I dont have an opinion because its nothing to do with me.

You can work but also be close to your children ? I was talking about people who don't spend any time with their children.

I'm amazed that so many of the grandparents aren't at work.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/09/2026 08:17

1, In my experience it's far more often sahp being critical of working mothers.

2, Most of us pay for childcare

Nah, my reading comprehension is fine, you are just being nasty because I called you out on your sexism.
Your thread is deliberately goady. I actually doubt the people you are complaining about exist.

The context of your post was that OP is closer to her kids than other Mums who work are. I apologise if I took it out of context but thats how I read it.

It’s not sexist. You’re literally nitpicking over semantics because I said “mothers” instead of “parents”.

If you really doubt people who brag about how much they work and call other parents lazy exist. Then I don’t know what to say, is it cozy under that rock you live under?
