AIBU to think DD’s ‘friend’ got a buzz cut to spite her?

My 22 year old DD has a male ‘friend’ who she has been on and off in a situationship with for a few months, they were friends before that.
On Wednesday she had a few girlfriends over as well as him and were just randomly discussing hairstyles. All the girls including DD mentioned they don’t like buzz cuts and then that was that. Yesterday, he came over to pick up DD to go out and he had been to the barbers and had a buzz cut! Only 3 days after he heard that DD and the other girls mentioned they don’t like them, he got one. I thought it was weird. He had really attractive blond wavy hair and he got rid of it for what?

AIBU to think this was quite narcissistic and he wanted to spite her, could be a bit of a stretch but perhaps even slightly misogynistic. Some males often do try to put down things women like and I’ve seen an increase in these buzz cuts recently.

Am I thinking too much into it or was he being spiteful? It’s just really irked me!

Reading this my first thoughts are this... Why are you this vested in something which literally has nothing to do with you. Flip this for a second. What would you think of a mil setting up a post about her son's girlfriend because she dared to cut her hair and you and your son didn't like it. Now that's odd and narcarcissist isn't it...

His body, his choice…
You are being ridiculous…. it’s nothing to do with you or your daughter!

I don't think OP sounds mad, but I do think this thread has turned into one of those OTT long-winded pile-ons that are a strange feature of AIBU. The OP moved on after half a day, but AIBU cannot 😂

The op started a thread about revenge hair and everyone one is the crazy ones?

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 20/03/2026 09:25

Oh come on! If I told someone that I loved their long hair and they went and cut it off the next day, I would wonder if they were sticking two fingers up to me.

All the posters going on about how it's his hair and he can do what he wants with it are missing OP's point.

LeedsLoiner · 20/03/2026 10:28

To quote my granny:
"If that's all you've got to worry about, sure you've got nothing to worry about"...

Isn’t it more than a little pretentious to think someone would cut their hair JUST to annoy you?

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 20/03/2026 15:22

It's not pretentious to notice the bleeding obvious coincidence and wonder if it means anything, no.

One of the enlightening things about growing older is realising that not everything is about you and other people often do things for entirely their own reasons that have nothing to do with you.

I'm middle-aged. Perhaps that's the reason I can see both possibilities simultaneously. 😆

Why would it be spiteful? Perhaps he was pissed off sat in a room full of women casting judgement on men based on appearance. I mean, I sat with a group of men judging womens hair styles I might want to give them a little fuck you too!

That's if he was even listening 🤣 but totally agree.
A bunch of women sat talking about what hairstyles they dislike in men, whilst a man ( who one of them is shagging) is sat right there. There is some disrespect going on here, but it's not coming from the young man.

I agree, @bridgetreilly - and frankly, even if he was her boyfriend, he would still have every right to his own opinion about his own hair.

I am sure that @RedBear685 would be up in arms if he was telling her daughter what to do with her hair.

Or his dad! 🤮

AussieMum135 · 23/03/2026 09:08

It could be as simple as he got a bad haircut and the only way to salvage it was to buzz it. This happened to my son recently....it was just awful and he decided this was the simplest fix...it grows back fast.
