If someone called your engagement ring "cute"

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:12

Would you think it was a bit bitchy? When showing a friend (who is known for giving backhanded compliments) she said "aww cute".

For reference my ring is a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire and everyone else has said how stunning it is. So certainly not a cheap, small ring.

Not all friendships are meant to last forever - just because you've known her for ages, that doesn't mean you have to keep her in your life. She's not a friend if she's making barbs about your weight or your engagement ring or anything else about your life!

Cute could mean pretty and be a nice thing to say. Equally it could be bitchy. None of us can tell you because we don't know her, but you do! If your instinct is that it was meanly meant, then you're probably right.

Anyone with manners knows that the correct response to seeing someone's engagement ring is to say it's lovely (or words to that effect). Only someone who is as rude af would give their honest opinion if they didn't like their friend's ring. She's not going to change it on the basis of that opinion - all 'honesty' will do is to hurt feelings, which is completely unnecessary in that context.

That depends on the cut.

It doesn’t. Get your facts straight. Refraction is also identical.

BIossomtoes · 01/03/2026 19:03

So why are lab diamonds a fraction of the cost of a natural diamond?

Because they’re more plentiful and don’t require a complex mining process.

Do high end jewellers sell lab diamonds? If not, why not?

Increasingly, yes because a lot of people don’t want to own something that requires appalling working conditions. Lab diamonds are considered more ethical.

Apologies - I should have said fluorescence patterns rather than refraction, as that was unclear.
The growth morphology of the crystals is different, which is why experts can tell the difference between lab and natural diamonds.

GIA info lab vs natural diamonds

bluegreygreen · 01/03/2026 19:19

Lab diamonds are considered more ethical.

They may be. It would depend where and how they are produced, and I suspect many people buying them haven't looked into that in detail. They are likely simply to have wanted to avoid the ethical concerns about natural diamonds, such as conflict diamonds, rather than considering the source of lab-grown diamonds.

@BringBackCatsEyes Do you not take into account whether your friends are in a partnership when going on a night out?

Why is it relevant that people are in a relationship when going on a night out? That doesn't change anything.

The only difference would be if they had a baby at home and they had to leave early, but people tend to verbalise that themselves.

If I had 4 tickets for a gig, one for me, one for a friend I know is single and 2 for a colleague who I know has a partner. Done.

So you wanted her to fall over in awe at your skill in bagging a rich man? Hmmmm, not sure that she’s the bitchy one ….

Which high end jewellers are selling lab diamonds then?

No idea - is your Google broken?

Hijackyou · 01/03/2026 19:49

I bet @Engagementringquestion asks her to be her Maid of Honour. Then starts multiple threads about how disappointed she is in her Maid of Honour.

I wonder what it’s like when an OP like this doesn’t like a person 😦

Loads - DD and I were looking in jewellery shops in November (for her , not me) , high end ones . Pretty much all sold LabGrown

Oops , replied to wrong poster

Greenmouldycheese · 01/03/2026 20:00

What did you expect her to say? Its a ring and its yours. I personally think what the ring represents is more important.

Why would I ask someone to bring their partner to an event?

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 21:08

I have not posted a picture of my ring by the way, another poster found the same style and added their own googled pic.

Jealousy is often irrational. One of the most unpleasant women I know has literally everything, on paper. Millions, huge house, family, nice (if drippy) husband. But, she is a prize cunt, unable to be happy for anyone else, about anything. And the “cute” comment is absolutely something she would come out with. It’s sad really, because she is clearly a very unhappy woman.

I agree, jealousy is often irrational. I could do a Ted talk on it.

I have a teeny ruby with a couple of tiny diamonds. Mine is cute, don't like huge knuckle duster rings personally as I've small hands. If you must show off, expect daft comments when people don't know what to say

Mistyglade · 01/03/2026 22:08

Sure it’s bitchy, but if she’s a jealous sod who cares, it’s your ring not hers.

LetsGoOutside · 01/03/2026 22:15

I’m trying to understand how you can get engaged and be more focused on a comment then celebrating and being in your engagement bubble. I really am struggling to understand how you can be so focused on a comment made about your ring that you’ve created a mumsnet post. Why does it matter how she meant it? Will you pull her up on it? Will it change your perception on her?

CocoKimoo · 01/03/2026 22:21

I call everything I like cute, I didn't realise it could be seen as bitchy!! That's sad. To me it means nice, pretty, lovely, it suits someone, it goes with everything etc - everything positive

Owl55 · 01/03/2026 23:00

It’s something my 19 year old Grandaughter would say and it would be a compliment . You sound like you want everyone to be amazed that you have an expensive ring🤔
