If someone called your engagement ring "cute"

Engagementringquestion · 01/03/2026 14:12

Would you think it was a bit bitchy? When showing a friend (who is known for giving backhanded compliments) she said "aww cute".

For reference my ring is a platinum 1.5 carat diamond solitaire and everyone else has said how stunning it is. So certainly not a cheap, small ring.

Would you be offended at this comment?

She deliberately used the word cute. It was designed to let you know she wasn't impressed. It's a nasty thing to do brought about by jealousy.
The only acceptable thing to say about someone's ring is that it is beautiful. A few oohs and ahhs should be thrown in too.

Of COURSE the OP's 'friend' wasn't jealous!

She should have given some ooohs and ahhhhs 🙄 Oh really, I must have missed that memo!!!

If I don't like someone's engagement ring, then I am not going to lie. And if it is like the one in the photo someone posted earlier of a 1.5ct diamond solitaire, I would NOT be ooohing and ahhhing, as I wouldn't like it, because I don't think it's very nice. (I have posted the link again!)

Why does the OP even care? Why the desperation to get someone to like her engagement ring, (someone she doesn't seem to even like?!) I have never cared what people think about my engagement ring. I never asked if people liked it because I DON'T CARE. It's been over 30 years so I can't even remember if anyone commented on it. I don't remember because I DON'T CARE!!!

I'd talk with her about it. Find out what's going on inside her head/heart, especially in view of her making 'back-handed compliments'. Consider dropping her as a friend or moving her to a lesser-friend status (yes, trickyyyy..) But def discuss it with her, and don't let her just dismiss it (or you) or 'laugh' it off.

Mummy2mybear · 01/03/2026 17:08

Who knows maybe it was bitchy maybe she just used the wrong word 🤔 It's hard to say, I would not worry about it as long as you are happy that is all that matters her view of it is irrelevant anyway.

StuffFreedom · 01/03/2026 17:10

DH bought me the world smallest, worn out second hand ring. I think he thought it was romantic and he did have to brave Hatton Garden with a tiny budget.
Both our parents had been burgled so at that stage we knew it was probably nicked or unhappy.
The humiliation when people said ' let's see the ring'
There was nothing there on my podgy fingers.

30 years later, we've saved an absolute fortune on jewelry.its not going to be a thing for me in this lifetime.

But my wedding pictures are great except for the bitches that my SIL snuck in, so guard your guest list.

Stravaig · 01/03/2026 17:11

You sound well-matched as friends.

You'd honestly tell a close friend you didn't like her engagement ring?? Wow

Ophir · 01/03/2026 17:12

Definitely snark from her

Dunno why but some woman just do this

Let me assure you that absolutely no one notices your engagement ring, nor do they care what it looks like. I have no idea what a "1.5 carat diamond solitaire" is.

Triskels · 01/03/2026 17:16

Would a better response have been 'Oh, what a magnificent rock!'?

Unless she’s generally clueless then yeah ‘cute’ is definitely meant as a sly put down when describing an engagement ring! Kittens are cute, engagement rings are beautiful/stunning/gorgeous!

Not all of them - mine’s pretty nondescript.

You are certainly very invested in this thread for someone who doesn’t care

LeafyMcLeafFace · 01/03/2026 17:24

Honestly, she called your ring cute, maybe it’s not her cup of tea but she was trying to say something nice.

Better than describing something as being like something out of a Christmas cracker.

Please don’t speak for everyone.
I notice rings.
I am neither particularly interested or knowledgable about jewellery and at 55 am not at the “everyone getting married” stage.

In the 90s house burglery for TVs and jewellery was quite a thing.
If you bought a second hand ring it had probably been stolen and sold on or had been sold at the point of marriage break down.

Basically in 1997 my DH bought a tiny stolen ring from a dodgy bloke with which to propose marriage.

I put it on my finger and as word got out 'Freedom is engaged' 'let's see the ring'
With my podgy hands, even then, you'd have more chance of seeing a rock on the moon.

But still married, 28 years, still bitter about the jewellery - yep!

PumpkinPieAlibi · 01/03/2026 17:29

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/03/2026 14:50

I think, going by the emphasis the OP has put upon the carats and metal used, it's expected by some that they fall over themselves to say 'OMG! That's a MASSIVE diamond! And PLATINUM! He really does love you more than any other boyfriend loves their girlfriend!'.

I wouldn't know. From googling pictures, they just look like a standard size sparkly thing in a ring. But I'd probably be hard put to be able to tell the difference between silver, white gold, platinum and titanium, never mind whether something a was natural diamond or a cubic zircona (which, as far I can see, is what engineered/lab diamonds used to be called).

Agree with all this but just one thing - cubic zirconia and lab diamonds are two totally different things. Lab diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds. They ARE a diamond, it's their provenance that varies.

CZ is a different material altogether and is a diamond simulant.

Well they aren’t, as any Jewelller can tell the difference,

Still got the ring on?

Restlessdreams1994 · 01/03/2026 17:32

YABU to think anyone other than you cares about your engagement ring. Flaunting your wealth in this economy is a bit dickish tbh.

They are. The only difference is that one’s dug out of the ground and the other’s manufactured from the same element. There’s no difference at all to the naked eye,

BlackCat14 · 01/03/2026 17:33

BatchCookBabe · 01/03/2026 17:07

Oh, and what was that then? What was she doing? 🙄

What was she doing? Making a bitchy comment.

StuffFreedom · 01/03/2026 17:36

Nerocostapret · 01/03/2026 17:31

Still got the ring on?

Christ, no. The first pregnancy stretched my my rib cage and all sorts of places beyond their elastic limit.
It's in a box. This thread has triggered a thought. I might give it to a teen daughter for a significant birthday. It's never going to fit me again and was already thin so can't be resized easily.

honeylulu · 01/03/2026 17:38

I've noticed a growing trend for using "cute" in the American sense meaning sexy/gorgeous/attractive. Whereas I (old gimmer) think it's a word for something little and cuddly like a baby, puppy or teddy bear.

If she meant it in the American sense it's probably a compliment. If she meant it in the traditional sense it's probably an insult. Or if she's prone to passive aggression she might mean the latter while dressing it up as the former.

WonderingWanda · 01/03/2026 17:42

Let her get on with it. She undoubtedly said cute because she didn't want you to think you had a lovely ring because of her own insecurities. Bin off people like this op. If the majority of people said it was stunning then who cares.

Perhaps more importantly consider what the ring means to you rather than how much it impresses others...it suggests you are equally as insecure as your friend.
