Embarrassed myself at friends wedding.

I went to a friends wedding a month ago. Had too much to drink, and fell asleep in the toilets. I was found by one of the bridesmaids who helped me to my room. The next day, everyone was joking about it.

I am mortified. I have 3 children and im 40 years old. I feel so much shame for getting myself in this state. It keeps popping into my head and I feel that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach! What an embarrassment I am.

I don’t really know what I’m hoping to get out of this post, but I am alone with my thoughts and feeling awful about this whole thing. I socialise with this extended group every 6 months or so, and I’ll be seeing them again soon, and I just don’t want to go. My friends parents all know etc. Will I ever not feel so awful about this???

er… can you link this thread? I fancy a laugh and I’m a bit fed up.

I linked it near the start of the thread

So your children found you?

No. OP said her children weren’t there.

AeriatedAnna · 22/02/2026 14:30

You work hard bringing up 3 kids …. All you did was have a drink & relax. You could’ve threw up over the bride, shagged the groom, beat up the bridesmaids. Honestly you have nothing to worry about.

No. OP said her children weren’t there.

I was confused in how she had embarrassed them!

Bloozie · 22/02/2026 14:38

Ah bless you... Yes, it's humiliating (and funny). What sort of mother does that? A real human one, that makes mistakes. We haven't all fallen asleep in the loos at a wedding, but we HAVE all done something that makes us feel like a twat. It's no reflection on you as a mother. Use it as a life lesson. However many drinks you had - always have 5 fewer than THAT in future. ;-)

bobby81 · 22/02/2026 14:39

I over think things all the time & 100% recognise the feeling you describe where the event keeps coming back into your mind. I don’t think this is as bad as you think & your friends will probably just have a giggle about it & move on. The only advice I can give is that time definitely helps me in these situations, just ride it out & in 6 months it won’t seem so bad x

Whats behind it is feeling like a failure and an embarrassment to my children. What sort of a mother does that???

So you'd judge another mum for falling asleep after one too many, even if her children weren't there?

Member984815 · 22/02/2026 14:42

You're not the first to over do it a wedding and you won't be the last , if all you did was fall asleep, that's nothing. I'd try and put it out of your mind and if it's brought up just laugh it off or say this is getting tiresome now can we not talk about something else.

A human one.

Grizelina · 22/02/2026 14:44

@SimpleSingle if it makes you feel any better, DH and I had friends round for dinner one evening. Afterwards we all sat in the living room - and when we both woke up they had gone home!!

Scarydinosaurs · 22/02/2026 14:50

You fell asleep. No crime here.

You will feel less worse by next week.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 22/02/2026 14:50

Ah my word, I have heard and seen so much worse than this.

Falling asleep in the loos is tame, and they will all think so too. I'm sure any teasing is just light hearted affection.

TroysMammy · 22/02/2026 14:56

Falling asleep in the toilet after a few drinks is normal isn't it? I've done it 3 times and once woke up, because I slid off the seat and breaking it at 3am. Everyone had gone home and I was on my own. Luckily it was a hotel the staff party was in so I wasn't locked in.

One holding herself up to super human standards? Chill out.

Strawberrypicnic · 22/02/2026 15:01

When I saw the thread title I thought it was going to be something faaaar worse. You're fine!

Queenoftartts · 22/02/2026 15:05

Unless you did something completely outrageous just forget about it and move on. Someone cared enough to get you to your room to sleep it off. I’ve been to a few weddings there’s usually a few people that have too much to drink. Especially if you were there without your children then you let your hair down.

Seriously... Your children won't give a fuck and when they're old enough to understand I'm sure will laugh with you over it.

I think you need to give your head a wobble.
Most people will have done something embarrassing when having one drink too many.
Everyone will forget about it and move on. Do the same.

Oh no! How will everyone react when you're all together again 😱🫣😉

It was years ago - we all used to make a joke of it! Everybody has done something they were embarrassed about and if they haven't they've led very sad lives!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 22/02/2026 15:18

Well done, you're human. Every single person on the planet has something like this in their memory, constantly clawing away at them. You've done well if you've gotten to 40 before finding yours.

It matters to you, and only you. Your friends will laugh and joke about it, but that's it. All of your friends will have one of these moments at least, probably more. You probably know about some of them. Do you judge them for it? No? Then why assume they're judging you?

Most of us once. It's really easy to have a bit too much to drink, especially when you don't often drink much. And it's really easy to feel embarrassed about behaviour that's outside of your norm.

If this were a frequent event then yes, that would be embarrassing and make you a bad mum. But once, that's just a little embarrassing and nothing to be ashamed about.

Tontostitis · 22/02/2026 15:30

Something similar happened at my wedding somebody got the lift to a higher level floor and got out got confused and ended up falling sleep in the corridor caused a bit of a panic.

When your children are old enough they will think you were a 'cool/wild' mum to get drunk and pass out in a toilet! It will himanise you a little towards them wheen they're teens!

Itsthesameeveryday · 22/02/2026 15:39

Oh god this is nothing!! I was expecting worse OP.

Look at it this way, had you not fallen asleep on the loo, what awful things might you have been up to on the dance floor?? 🤣 Blessing in disguise.
