Embarrassed myself at friends wedding.

SimpleSingle · 22/02/2026 11:55

I went to a friends wedding a month ago. Had too much to drink, and fell asleep in the toilets. I was found by one of the bridesmaids who helped me to my room. The next day, everyone was joking about it.

I am mortified. I have 3 children and im 40 years old. I feel so much shame for getting myself in this state. It keeps popping into my head and I feel that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach! What an embarrassment I am.

I don’t really know what I’m hoping to get out of this post, but I am alone with my thoughts and feeling awful about this whole thing. I socialise with this extended group every 6 months or so, and I’ll be seeing them again soon, and I just don’t want to go. My friends parents all know etc. Will I ever not feel so awful about this???

I was here for a much juicier story! Jokes aside it’s not that bad and could have been so much worse! Most ppl have probably forgotten about it. If they do bring it up, own it and style it out like a PP has suggested.

emmetgirl · 22/02/2026 13:39

I wish that was the worst thing I’d ever done while drunk

HearHareHere · 22/02/2026 13:40

Please don’t give yourself a hard time, OP. It’s really not that bad what you did. At my wedding a close family member who had got married herself a few months earlier (her husband wasn’t able to come to our wedding) had a massive snog with another family member (from a different side of the family, no incest involved!).
She is usually very well behaved and straight-laced which added to the shock of it 🤦🏼‍♀️

SusanChurchouse · 22/02/2026 13:40

It’s very easy to overindulge at a wedding. Long gaps without food, alcohol being offered at regular intervals. The recent thread on weddings would confirm this, and that people have done much worse when inebriated. You sound like you are very self critical, I get that. Try to forgive yourself.

i remember one of the guests at a Hen Do I was at did this. Also a woman with kids. We thought she’d disappeared and we got worried when we couldn’t get hold of her. Turns out she’d fallen asleep in a loo. When you don’t drink very often your tolerance goes down.

Whats behind it is feeling like a failure and an embarrassment to my children. What sort of a mother does that???

Am sorry, if someone falls asleep drunk at a wedding, it's amusing! People who get violent, mouthy and loud are an embarrassment, not those who have a giggle then fall asleep.

It is fine, please stop being hard on yourself and move on.

Furandblack · 22/02/2026 13:42

Just lean into it and laugh along. I once fell asleep on the loo at work, if it makes you feel any better.

You falling asleep on the loo is a mere passing thought to other people. Don't let it dominate your thoughts and certainly don't let it stop you seeing your friends.

Its really quite a minor escapade.

IsItSnowing · 22/02/2026 13:44

I get that it's a bit embarrassing but honestly, if that's the worst thing you've ever done you're very lucky. People do really stupid stuff at parties after a few drinks. This is mildy embarrassing, if at all.
You fell asleep because you had a few drinks and were tired. Just let it go. It's not memorable and even if someone were to make a comment on it, just shrug and say 'yeah, I was tired lol' and move on.

WittyTaupeFox · 22/02/2026 13:45

You can put it down to experience - it’s in the past now.

But also a good opportunity to decide if you want to do things like that in future & adjust your alcohol consumption as a result.

The book Bad Drunk is good to see the impact on mothering / binge drinking and the shame that comes afterwards. Also some ideas on what to do about it. Good luck

You've obviously never been to an Irish wedding in Ireland then?

I have, and believe me falling asleep in the toilets is nothing. Over there, if you can't get drunk and go a bit doo lally at a wedding there's no hope for ya! (if you're a drinker that is..)

However, I noticed that "what goes on tour stays on tour" so no post mortems or embarrassing comments etc. next day. Everyone is in the same boat.

I'm Irish BTW.

Exactly!
Fellow Irish woman here.

Imagine the next morning making someone feel bad cause they fell asleep in the loo!

If anything it would be mentioned in jest ‘ah sure you missed that madness on the dance floor Sheila, you were too busy snoozing in the loo’.

OP, be kinder to yourself. You are human. You had too much to drink at a wedding, you fell asleep.
In no way does that make you a bad mother.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/02/2026 13:49

I got hammered at my best friend's wedding June 24.I was dancing the macarena to everything but the macarena 😂But so what I was having a good time as I was so happy for my friend.Move on.

Fourleggedfanatic · 22/02/2026 13:55

I have done many things that are a whole lot worse than this! Try not to worry- it will be old news before you know it x

Daisymae55 · 22/02/2026 13:55

Honestly I wouldn’t worry about this. Yeah it’s a bit embarrassing but it’s not like you got in a drunk fight or insulted the bride or anything.

Someone did FAR worse than what you did at our wedding and we don’t think any less of them. They had a bit too much fun - no harm done.

You're being way too harsh on yourself 💕

Forty85 · 22/02/2026 13:56

Falling asleep in the toilet is not what I thought I'd read when I came on this thread. You weren't on the dance floor flashing your knickers or boobs, weren't loudly shouting or being aggressive or puking infront of people. You were quietly taken to your room and didn't cause a scene. Move on from this, you did nothing to ruin their day in any way shape or form.

365RubyRed · 22/02/2026 13:57

Most of us who drink will have done something equally, or more, embarrassing than you. Stop beating yourself up about it. Draw a line under it and hold your head high. It's not the end of the world, and I'm willing to bet most of the wedding guests will have forgotten all about it - that's if they even knew about it in the first place.

So your children found you?

Offtowalkthedoggie · 22/02/2026 14:03

Definitely laugh it off OP. So much better being asleep in the loo than doing awful things on the dance floor.

You can’t judge yourself harshly for one event. Most people have been there, I’ve seen it in my circle of friends and have been there myself. I still cringe, so allow yourself to believe it’s normal to feel shame!

Regarding your worth as a mother, it shows how much of a good mother you are for being reflective and caring. Do give yourself a break op, no one is perfect. ❤️

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 22/02/2026 14:05

You are so massively overthinking this.

Hippee · 22/02/2026 14:05

The wedding must have been pretty boring if this was considered newsworthy. Unless your knickers were round your ankles and you were carried out through the wedding - which did happen to a friend of mine at a party once.

ThatLilacTiger · 22/02/2026 14:06

If you asked me to describe the demographic of person most likely to fall asleep drunk in the toilets at a friend's wedding, I'd have gone with 40 year old mum. It's really not as shocking as you think.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/02/2026 14:07

@SimpleSingle I rarely drink, but definitely have over indulged in the past. Ugh, just thinking about the hangovers is making my stomach do flip-flops. 🤢
We've all drank too much and it always seems to happen when we want to be at our best. Joke about it! It's not who you are, it's just something that happened.

Jaffalemons · 22/02/2026 14:08

LakieLady · 22/02/2026 12:44

This.

If there was a thread for "Embarrassing things you've done when pissed" I could probably fill half a page just with my own experiences.

Falling asleep on the lav at a wedding wouldn't even get close to making the cut!

…. what if you’re the bride? Asking for a friend 😳😂

PinkyFlamingo · 22/02/2026 14:11

You fell asleep is that all? Seriously.

I am rofl laughing at your line: dancing the Macarena to everything but the Macarena!
Bravo! 💃💃💃👏👏👏

Sasha07 · 22/02/2026 14:18

You're fiiiine OP! I came across a thing on Facebook of a bride and groom with the bridesmaids getting a photo together. Just when the bride and groom shared a kiss for the camera, some crazy bridesmaid decided that was a perfect time to twerk infront of the couple...

I promise you, falling asleep in the toilet is absolutely nothing. You weren't making a show of yourself, you didn't ruin anyone's night. It was basically a best case scenario for someone who had too much and didn't make it to bed. Take the spotlight off yourself 💐
