To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Shadeflower · 20/02/2026 23:46

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

I have often wondered this!!!

SunMoonandChocolate · 20/02/2026 23:52

Personally I like the toilet seat AND the lid left down, so then whoever uses it has to arrange it for their own needs, male or female, but the main thing is, that you should always put the lid down when you flush, to stop germs going all over other items in the bathroom, like your toothbrush, etc.

Sometimeswinning · 20/02/2026 23:53

Wow. I’d totally judge you as a visitor using your toilet.

SandyY2K · 20/02/2026 23:53

The seat doesn't look good when it's up. I get mildly irritated with DH for this, as do our DDs.

TheMorgenmuffel · 20/02/2026 23:55

Really the seat and lid should go down before flushing. It's more hygienic.

NotMeAtAll · 20/02/2026 23:55

I don't understand it either.

PragmaticIsh · 20/02/2026 23:57

Women need it down all the time, men need it down some of the time, so overall it needs to be down more.

Anyway, the lid should be down to flush, so if that isn't happening then it's gross.

BluTangClan · 20/02/2026 23:59

You are both wrong. Lid down.
Although you are slightly less wrong because he uses it with the seat up and down, so will sometimes use it in the way you have left it. You will never use it with the seat up.

Isittimeformynapyet · 21/02/2026 00:00

Men should be responsible for lifting and lowering the seat because they're the ones likely to piss all over it, so they're the ones that need to get it temporarily out of the way.

Let's face it, they don't have many disadvantages in life do they?

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 21/02/2026 00:02

I think for me it’s that I’d have to touch a toilet seat to put it down before using it whereas if it’s already down I can just use the loo then wash my hands.

PollyBell · 21/02/2026 00:03

Men are the enemy and the daily double standard if it is not this it will be the next topic

But we are told there is never a double standard so it must be a mirage

Isittimeformynapyet · 21/02/2026 00:05

This lid down business: I wasn't brought up in a lid down house and only recall seeing those very few times until the last ten years or so.

I honestly thought toilets only had lids so they could be used as bathroom chairs until recently.

Ponderingwindow · 21/02/2026 00:07

I always need it in one position. I have no need to touch the seat. Therefore I want to find it in that position.

women’s anatomy is also more prone to infection. If I touch the seat, I feel the need to wash my hands before using the toilet, especially if I have my period. I don’t want to touch vulnerable spots on my body if my hands aren’t clean.

SheSpeaks · 21/02/2026 00:08

Our toilet seats are always down. never up. Men and women live here. We all use it with the seat down. Nobody gets annoyed. Nobody pees on the seat (or if they do they clean it up and I don’t know about it.

I have never known the seats be lifted. They have never been lifted by a visitor either to my knowledge. I only ever touch the seat with my hands when cleaning it.

Babsandherwabs · 21/02/2026 00:09

I don’t get it either. There are 3 males to 2 females in our house, surely we females should be leaving the seat up? I often think that. I don’t do it though 😆 The seat is always down, I assume DH puts it down for me. No idea if the boy kids lift it or not in the first place.

Apollonia1 · 21/02/2026 00:20

Men need the seat up to wee. Men need it down to poo.
Women need the seat down for wee, poo, periods.

So for 4 out of 5 functions the seat needs to be down. Therefore the default should be seat down.

Luckily my kids automatically put the seat and lid down to flush the toilet.

mondaytosunday · 21/02/2026 00:39

Ever sat accidentally when the seat is up? I don’t turn on the light when I go in the middle of the night. Also leaving the seat up looks odd, the underside of the seat isn’t aesthetic.

This. It needs to be down to flush. And it is the absolute worst to accidentally sit down on a toilet seat that is up, so you fall through the rim. Due to this danger, the polite thing is that it’s always down, and men can put it up to wee if they need to. (And put it back after!).

Yes to both of these reasons

ColdAsAWitches · 21/02/2026 00:43

they're the ones likely to piss all over it,

Have you never seen a public toilet after a 'hoverer'?!

JudyP · 21/02/2026 00:45

Once I heard about this I never flushed again with the lid up - Closing the toilet lid before flushing is essential to prevent the "toilet plume," a fine mist of aerosolized water, bacteria, and fecal matter that can spray several feet into the air, contaminating surfaces - I would now never flush a number one and would be revolted if a number 2 was flushed with the lid up!

FourSevenTwo · 21/02/2026 00:46

Men should pee sitting down at home. It's more hygienic and actually healthier for them. Than all functions are seat down and no need to argue.

Pistachiocake · 21/02/2026 00:48

I suppose you could make the argument that women need it down 100% of the time, and men, what, 20 odd percent? Not getting into a debate, but that would mean that over 50% of the time, the user will want it down, so therefore it should be down. And apparently, in some countries men normally sit, so as not to splash.
But I agree with everyone who says the lid should be down too.

And yet those of us who have never in our lives put the lid down to flush are here, alive and super healthy.

Honestly, every year people seem to get more obsessed with this sort of nonsense.

Another mumsnet myth 🙄
