To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

Seat and lid down. Always. Vulgar to leave the seat/ lid up. There doesn’t need to be a logical reason why - it just is.

BlueMum16 · 21/02/2026 15:33

The seat should be down as the lid should be down when you flush. It's more hygienic.

Ever sat accidentally when the seat is up? I don’t turn on the light when I go in the middle of the night. Also leaving the seat up looks odd, the underside of the seat isn’t aesthetic.

A motion sensor mini light in your bathroom is the answer to this - for both men and women.

Personally I like the toilet seat AND the lid left down, so then whoever uses it has to arrange it for their own needs, male or female, but the main thing is, that you should always put the lid down when you flush, to stop germs going all over other items in the bathroom, like your toothbrush, etc.

Agree, we all leave the loo seat down here for that reason. I never flush without closing the seat .

WhatYouWearing · 21/02/2026 15:42

The lid should be down every time you flush your waste away.

I saw a tv prog once where a group of students kept getting ill. They never put the lid down and when the investigators examined their toothbrushes there were traces of fecal matter on them 🤮

Interesting so many think the who lle seat should be down because it is very unusual to find a toilet that way, and TBH if I find a public toilet with the lid down, I assume it because I don't want to see what's underneath!

I can use a lid-up public toilet w/o my hands touching any part of it. Many public toilets don't have lids. I'm not too worried about my arse cheeks, they tend to stay tucked away.

I use tissue to raise the lid if it's down. I am by no means anxious about health and hygiene (maybe a bit more since Covid), but I draw the line at possibly putting my fingers on someone else's shit or blood. And as you say, it's not uncommon to find the lid has been closed because what's below will make you heave.

I'd like to see that investigation.
Millions of households leave their tooth brushes out while flushing with the lid open.

I can’t get worked up about things like this. If it’s down great, if it’s up I put it down. I’d never heard about the lid flush thing until I read it on Mumsnet. I’ve survived unscathed so far.

This lid down business: I wasn't brought up in a lid down house and only recall seeing those very few times until the last ten years or so.

I honestly thought toilets only had lids so they could be used as bathroom chairs until recently.

I worked with someone who was brought up being told that not putting the lid down was the height of rudeness. When the discussion came up in the office she couldn't believe that we were all rather indifferent about the subject.

None of the dead-from-lid-up people are on MN.🚽☠

Hahaha that made me laugh out loud!

AgentPidge · 21/02/2026 15:59

It's bad feng shui to leave the lid and seat up!

But for me, it's the aerosol effect of wee (and worse!) being shot six feet across the room when it's flushed with the seat up. I don't want urine on my towels or toothbrush, thanks. DH is a scientist and he agrees the loo should be flushed with the lid down.

There was something about this on the TV a while back. They tested makeup brushes in a bathroom and found urine on them. Nice.

This is like the shoes off/on in the house thing - you can talk all you like about bacteria on pavements but some people just can't see the problem. We do all seem to survive, but I still don't want poo particles on my toothbrush.

AprilinPortugal · 21/02/2026 16:04

I think I voted YABU by mistake. I agree with you

NewZebra · 21/02/2026 16:07

Anyone who doesn’t close the lid before flushing is gross.

ScrollingLeaves · 21/02/2026 16:12

If a man has left the seat up and covered in sprayed wee, a woman has to touch all that to get it down. A woman does not leave a seat covered in urine as often.

Secondly, everyone should be putting the cover down before flushing as germs are in the tiny droplets that come when it is flushed.

It is unfortunate that some lavatories now have no covers.

ScrollingLeaves · 21/02/2026 16:14

Any man travelling to the USA ought to know that he would be judged pretty harshly for leaving the seat up.

Seawolves · 21/02/2026 16:15

Seat down, lid down. I always close the lid before flushing.

BringBackCatsEyes · 21/02/2026 16:17

So, what do people do in the cubicles which have a sink inside and a loo w/o a lid.
Leave and find one with a lid (gets harder once you've developed 'key in the door' syndrome)?
Not flush the loo = no killer particles but a bit unpleasant for the next user.
Flush the loo (while covering you mouth and cowering in the corner)? Wash your hands and then.....how do you open the door? It'll be covered with excrement.

tuesdaytuesday31 · 21/02/2026 16:21

This argument is the bane of my fucking life.

Men have no reason to stand up and pee unless it’s at a urinal but my DH always does, and always leaves the seat up. It’s minging.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 21/02/2026 16:26

I don’t care about the seats. Never have and never understood why people get so bothered by it!

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 21/02/2026 16:26

As long as it’s clean though!

ColdAsAWitches · 21/02/2026 00:43

they're the ones likely to piss all over it,

Have you never seen a public toilet after a 'hoverer'?!

I have indeed, and it's very upsetting.

But I think this thread is about home toilets as public ones are rarely unisex (ATM!)

Hoverers need to pack it in, but that's a whole other thread!

ginasevern · 21/02/2026 16:29

@Ponderingwindow "women’s anatomy is also more prone to infection. If I touch the seat, I feel the need to wash my hands before using the toilet, especially if I have my period. I don’t want to touch vulnerable spots on my body if my hands aren’t clean."

That's a bit dramatic. By that logic you'd live in an oxygen bubble and never go anywhere.

catipuss · 21/02/2026 16:34

It's lid closed that men also don't do when they put the seat up. It looks horrible and means they flushed with the lid up which fires (very, very) fine spray all around the bathroom.

It's not a myth you get aerosols thrown up by the flush, that contain particles of whatever was in the toilet, lovely. Even with the lid closed it's not perfect.
