To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Shadeflower · 20/02/2026 23:46

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

I'd like to see that investigation.
Millions of households leave their tooth brushes out while flushing with the lid open.

Maybe, subconsciously, it's why I never have my toothbrush face up on the shelf but put it on it's side

I think for me it’s that I’d have to touch a toilet seat to put it down before using it whereas if it’s already down I can just use the loo then wash my hands.

This is why I don't like it when people leave the lid down. It's annoying having to lift it up before you use the loo. Also, once when quite drunk, in my youth, Iplonked myself down on a closed lid to wee which didn't end well 😂

Flamingojune · 21/02/2026 17:07

It's just a kindly gesture in a male dominated world to leave it down for the females in your life

That's a fair point also

It could have been worse if the seat and the lid were both up 😀!

The lid should be down every time you flush your waste away.

I saw a tv prog once where a group of students kept getting ill. They never put the lid down and when the investigators examined their toothbrushes there were traces of fecal matter on them 🤮

I've never put the seat down before flushing and my toothbrush is not far from the loo. I'm very rarely ill with anything other than an occasional cold. Maybe chomping on faecal matter for decades has boosted my immune system 😁

At least then I would have done my wee in the loo rather than on myself and the top of the lid 😁

TwilightAb · 21/02/2026 17:25

Surely the lid should be put down anyway to flush, so toilet seat down.

Butterytoastandtea · 21/02/2026 17:26

BluTangClan · 20/02/2026 23:59

You are both wrong. Lid down.
Although you are slightly less wrong because he uses it with the seat up and down, so will sometimes use it in the way you have left it. You will never use it with the seat up.

This! Lid down!

RaininSummer · 21/02/2026 17:33

Just have the lid down after use then no issue and looks better

OneMoreTimeBaby · 21/02/2026 18:24

Is it just me with a soft close seat then. They take a long time to go down when you’re bursting! Seat down in our house.

Inchworms · 21/02/2026 18:39

Not a major issue in our household.

but the people worried about touching a (clean? Ish?) toilet seat in their own house then changing a tampon… I realise not everyone does but I do put actual penises in there myself and they’ve def got wee remnants so….

Onelifeonly · 21/02/2026 18:42

I've never understood it or cared either. I prefer the seat not to be wet though.

LadyCrustybread · 21/02/2026 19:00

Because if it’s up and don’t notice I fall in and smash my coccyx off the porcelain. DH had a shock when he sat down in the night and experienced the same. He has been much better since.

Not putting the seat up will never cause injury. Leaving seat up could. Therefore the solution is obvious. Seats are down except for the small amount of time they are required to be up.

Well ! I don't do that ! Penises indeed !

Given the Mumsnet obsession with all things to do with toilets, I'm surprised this discussion hasn't come up more often. Outside MN, this war is even older than "should I let workmen shit in my toilet?"

As for the underside of a toilet seat not being aesthetically pleasing: I remember thinking as a child, that it looks like a monster with a wide-open mouth, and it was right on my eye level as well.

SusiQ18472638 · 22/02/2026 11:22

Because they are the ones who need to move the seat from its default position, I would rather not touch the toilet seat when I don’t need to!

Jan24680 · 22/02/2026 11:30

Lid down, because who wants toilet spray, faeces and urine sprayed around their bathroom.

Better that than falling into the loo and getting flushed away for ever. I tell you, it would be like a log flume rife to hell. 😆🐀💩

Love2Fly · 22/02/2026 11:59

Toilet seat and lid down at all times unless in use! I can not stand seeing the lid up. Close the lid before you flush, for hygiene purpose!

Love2Fly · 22/02/2026 12:06

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/02/2026 08:30

Absolutely LID DOWN ergo seat down too.

I hate seeing estate agent photos of bathrooms where the toilet lid is up.

This! The estate agents photos with lids up make me want to scream 😂

SabbatWheel · 22/02/2026 12:28

DH was trained to put seat down and leave lid up as his sister was in a wheelchair.
This suits me just fine, as I have Crohns and the extra 2 seconds lifting the lid can mean the difference between making it and not making it when I need an urgent evacuation.

ChocolateHobbit · 22/02/2026 12:51

In the real world most people don't put the lid down to flush.
Also in the real world, people rarely get ill from it.

People who worry about these things probably have Dettol baths and change their bath towels every day.

It's a toilet. Why on earth does it matter.
