To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

You only need to sit on the cold sticky rim in the middle of the night while half asleep once to become an "always down" convert.

There is a risk of slipping/falling if the seat isn't where you think it is as well as sitting on the rim just being grim all around. Leaving the seat up exposes people to that risk, where as leaving it down is safer with no real downsides.

2026Y · 22/02/2026 13:08

Well ideally everyone should put the lid down IMO but I agree, seat up / seat down is nether better not worse than the alternative.

YourGreenCat · 22/02/2026 13:09

Knowing you should close the lid before flushing, you are all pigs if you have an issue/ non issue 😂

Bad enough in a separate toilet, but flushing with the lid up in a bathroom? Grim!
Seat up or down is not the problem here.

It's a toilet. Why on earth does it matter.

same way it matters with the bin. Who would take a photo of the kitchen with an open bin in the middle?

TiredShadows · 22/02/2026 13:25

Everyone needs it down to shite on a toilet, so the 'he needs it up' is not entirely correct.

Also, in the oddest 'not all men' I can think of, not all men pee standing - that's a preference some men have, it is the cultural norm in some places, most men can pee standing into a toilet, and so 'as long as he's using it up' isn't actually a concern. I don't care if they're peeing standing or sitting. It's 'as long as he's using it and not leaving a mess' just like anyone else.

I don't get bothered with what the other people do, unless they've left a mess on the seat. At home, I put it all down to flush and prefer to find it that way. In public, I close to flush if there is a lid and then put the top lid back up before going to wash my hands. Getting upset over it may be OTT, but I can see why it would happen if you've had a slip into the toilet in the night because the seat was up. I've ended up on the rim a few times myself from not paying attention, it's not pleasant.

Personally I like the toilet seat AND the lid left down, so then whoever uses it has to arrange it for their own needs, male or female, but the main thing is, that you should always put the lid down when you flush, to stop germs going all over other items in the bathroom, like your toothbrush, etc.

This.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 22/02/2026 13:27

It is as we find it in this house. DS leaves it up, DH puts it back down after use.

Usernamenotav · 22/02/2026 13:41

The toilet lid should be down no matter who has used it.

Astra53 · 22/02/2026 13:46

We are seat and lid down. Always. Nosey cats and bleach don't mix !!

Toilet seat and lid down at all times unless in use! I can not stand seeing the lid up. Close the lid before you flush, for hygiene purpose!

I hate finding a toilet with the lid down. Always makes me assume something wouldnt flush away and it's been left with the lid down to cover it up.

If there's a row of cubicles free and one has the lid down I'll always skip that one to one with the lid up to prevent nasty surprises.

Heyhelga · 22/02/2026 17:56

The lid is there for a reason. It's lazy man or woman to not put the lid down before flushing.

moderate · 22/02/2026 18:20

If everyone teaches their sons to sit down for a pee, we can put this daft discussion behind us forever.

Well ! I don't do that ! Penises indeed !

Not me! Wouldn't know one if I sat on one! 😆

Well, best to look before putting your bum down on the seat then isn't it? Not sure why it has to be the mans job to check if the seat is up/down and put the seat up anymore than it is the womans job to check before sitting on the toilet, and put the seat down if required?! It might be easier for the woman, but equality is key, so both men and women must share any inconvenience.

randomchap · 23/02/2026 10:16

Leave it with the lid down. Looks much tidier

Flush lid down but a quick post flush check to ensure it's clean for the next visitor

This would only be true if you could shut the lid and leave the seat up.

angielizzy1 · 23/02/2026 12:06

If you'd even run to the loo in the middle of the night with blood running down your legs only to find you fall down the toilet then you'd know why the seat needs to be left down at all times.

ThereWillBeSun · 23/02/2026 19:47

I always need it down, he sometimes needs it down, Therefore, the majority of the time it should be down. And in fact, he could always could use it down if he could be bothered to sit…

When you flush a toilet with the lid up - little tiny particles of pee and 💩 float through your bathroom and get on nearby surfaces and things like your toothbrush.

gamerchick · 23/02/2026 23:08

Because it means those mingers are flushing with the lid up.

Welshmonster · 27/02/2026 09:13

Put the seat and lid down when flushing unless you want poop particles on your toothbrush. Also stops dust getting in the cracks on the toilet seat hinges which are tricky to clean

Women have the seat down to use the loo completely and men have the seat down to poo so why should it remain up just for men to pee when the majority of the time it will need to be down?

Screamingabdabz · 27/02/2026 09:20

That’s what I hate about unisex toilets - selfish cunt blokes always leave the lid up and often don’t flush so I’m left cleaning up after some random bloke before I’m even able to use it. I often wonder about the women they live with and why they put up with it. Thankfully the men in my house are gentlemen.

And that’s why op - it’s about consideration. Men need the seat up so it’s their job to lift it and put it back again.

ChalkOrCheese · 27/02/2026 09:21

Threads like this make me so happy my husband does sit down wees.

CreepyCoupe · 27/02/2026 09:23

In our house, the loo seats and lids are always down when not in use. And the males living in the house sit down to wee. If only I could force male visitors to do the same. 🤨

I’m always surprised when house listings have photos with loo lids up - it looks awful.
