To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

I don't understand this either, but for a different reason: surely all men in this day and age should pee sitting down! Peeing standing up is absolutely disgusting, it sprays everywhere, and IMO it's only the men who don't clean the toilet themselves who do it.

Georgieporgie29 · 21/02/2026 08:20

Echoing some of the previous posters.

1- because it looks better. It looks like something left with its lid off if the seat is up

2- when getting up for a nighttime wee the people sitting down don’t have to sit on the cold porcelain and get a shock falling into the toilet bowl (plus there’s always stray wee droplets on there)

Buddinghell · 21/02/2026 08:22

StarlightLady · 21/02/2026 07:51

Eh? Who wants man wee on a toilet seat? And who wants to sit on a toilet seat that has been weed on and just wiped of with toilet paper. 🤮

My point was why can’t they aim at the large space that’s not the seat?
Theres no need for wee on the seat at all.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/02/2026 08:30

Absolutely LID DOWN ergo seat down too.

I hate seeing estate agent photos of bathrooms where the toilet lid is up.

The seat doesn't look good when it's up. I get mildly irritated with DH for this, as do our DDs.

Yes. It's the aesthetics as much as anything.

They tend to dribble. And for what ever reason their aim is often poor.

GentleSheep · 21/02/2026 08:39

My main reason for wanting the seat down again after a man has put it up is so that I don't sit down in the dark of night on just the bowl. The lid must be down so the cat doesn't drown - or that's what I was told! More likely so he doesn't drink water out of the bowl!

There's a gap between the lid and the seat so even when you put it down to flush, all the 'germs' still go into the bathroom air. Viruses and bacteria are miniscule. That gap is huge by comparison! So those of you thinking it's not happening are deluded. 😅

ZebraPyjamas · 21/02/2026 09:28

Not so much a seat up/down issue as a lid open/closed issue for me, the lid should be closed when the toilet is flushed so the water doesn’t splash out! Also agree with the aesthetics thing.

Flamingojune · 21/02/2026 09:46

It needs to be down most of the time so its just polite

PartyRockAnthem · 21/02/2026 07:10

If you’ve ever gone to the loo in the night and nearly fallen down it with the added shock of the cold porcelain against your skin you might change your mind.

Feels like you're toppling backwards into the bowels of hell.

MandingoAteMyBaby · 21/02/2026 10:02

If you leave it up, the piss runs off it into the bowl

timeserved · 21/02/2026 12:08

My DH told me he pee’s on the seat then lifts it to drain.

EmeraldGlade · 21/02/2026 12:14

I prefer for the whole lid to be down. Just looks better.

Brefugee · 21/02/2026 12:19

seat down, lid down unless in use.
Anything else is - urgh.

Sahara123 · 21/02/2026 14:14

SouthernNights59 · 21/02/2026 00:54

And yet those of us who have never in our lives put the lid down to flush are here, alive and super healthy.

Honestly, every year people seem to get more obsessed with this sort of nonsense.

I agree. I’ve spent the best part of my life giving this no thought whatsoever. I couldn’t even say for sure how I leave the lid !

I actually think about this on a regular basis but I won't change for some reason. It's pretty funny actually

somanychristmaslights · 21/02/2026 14:23

Because the whole lid should be put down when flushing!! There’s been so many studies about the toilet particals spreading all around the bathroom if the lid isn’t closed. Gross!!!!

Alwaysontherun · 21/02/2026 14:47

The seat and the lid should both be down therefore both have to lift in order to use. From a hygiene perspective I can’t understand why anyone would leave the lid up!

Shadeflower · 21/02/2026 14:49

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 21/02/2026 00:02

I think for me it’s that I’d have to touch a toilet seat to put it down before using it whereas if it’s already down I can just use the loo then wash my hands.

Well yes, but the same applies, that he has to touch it before use if you leave it down.

OP posts:
Shadeflower · 21/02/2026 14:50

Interesting so many think the who lle seat should be down because it is very unusual to find a toilet that way, and TBH if I find a public toilet with the lid down, I assume it because I don't want to see what's underneath!

Also you don't want to be putting the lid up on a public toilet

Exactly this.

ThePoshUns · 21/02/2026 14:54

Whoever puts it up, puts it down then washes their hands. I don’t want to touch the toilet seat with my clean hands before going to
toilet.

But a man who needs it up has to?

The man won't deal with tampons or mooncups after putting the seat up.
