To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

Once I heard about this I never flushed again with the lid up - Closing the toilet lid before flushing is essential to prevent the "toilet plume," a fine mist of aerosolized water, bacteria, and fecal matter that can spray several feet into the air, contaminating surfaces - I would now never flush a number one and would be revolted if a number 2 was flushed with the lid up!

🙄

Miniaturemom · 21/02/2026 01:33

You are absolutely right….its no big deal to put it back down during the day. However,
I have occasionally sat down without realising the seat is up half asleep in the dark at night and felt really irrationally angry about it.

I too prefer the lid down anyway.

because .......contamination

But if he’s put it up it can be put down by only touching the upper surface?

SemperIdem · 21/02/2026 02:08

Men don’t need the toilet seat up, at all. They can sit to wee, just like women do. Standing is a choice.

UnNiddeRides · 21/02/2026 02:08

I don’t have this problem as my sons urinate sitting down. When I toilet trained them it was standing up as I thought that was the norm, but as they got older they just switched to sitting. I suspect it has to do with phone usage. Not only do they browse while having a crap but also WhatsApp while having a wee.

ThatFairy · 21/02/2026 02:10

Yeah I agree. My son is very respecting, always leaving it down when he comes out the bathroom. He did leave it up the other day, it didn't bother me at all, I just put it down it's not that hard !

Did you see the South Park where Butters left the seat up and his mother fell in the toilet lol. "You could have killed your mother !"

The same applies. Just put your fingers between the cistern & the seat and apply pressure downwards on the upper surface.

Freya1542 · 21/02/2026 02:23

are we talking at cross purposes @UnNiddeRides?

My initial reply was to @Shadeflower's post that toilet seat up wasn't a big deal.

My point is the toilet plume (aerosolized mist of bacteria that can extend ~6ft) hence contamination.

This is why when I worked in a plant that processed and prepared fresh food for a network of major supermarkets, that I thought the toilets should not have been in the same building and ground floor as the work space. There was one room separating the two spaces. Gas is gas, air spreads

Doingtheboxerbeat · 21/02/2026 02:47

Even without the hygiene aspect, having the toilet lid down is ✨ aesthetically pleasing ✨ and that way, everyone gets to touch it before and after use.

It's as ridiculous as deciding weather to leave the kitchen cupboards open or closed - open for convenience or closed for aesthetics.

This is why I live alone.

JudyP · 21/02/2026 02:50

I see people are rolling their eyes about the toilet plume so I linked this for proof re germs increased with lid left up

obvIously everyone can do what they like but just explaining why I like the seat down - but you do you!

rommymummy · 21/02/2026 03:27

Men sit to wee in my house. Lid down to flush.

StarlightLady · 21/02/2026 04:31

But it’s not about the seat, it’s the lid. You can’t close the lid without closing the seat. The lid is there for a reason.

PartyRockAnthem · 21/02/2026 07:10

If you’ve ever gone to the loo in the night and nearly fallen down it with the added shock of the cold porcelain against your skin you might change your mind.

Men are the enemy and the daily double standard if it is not this it will be the next topic

But we are told there is never a double standard so it must be a mirage

The OP has literally posted the opposite to what you’re saying, give over.

cramptramp · 21/02/2026 07:12

I agree with you OP. I’m as capable at putting the seat down as my OH is at putting it up. It makes no difference to me either way.

Shallwemarry · 21/02/2026 07:17

SunMoonandChocolate · 20/02/2026 23:52

Personally I like the toilet seat AND the lid left down, so then whoever uses it has to arrange it for their own needs, male or female, but the main thing is, that you should always put the lid down when you flush, to stop germs going all over other items in the bathroom, like your toothbrush, etc.

This!

But also yanbu, op!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 21/02/2026 07:19

We are a toilet seat down household, including lid. Everybody arranges it for their own needs, and closes it on flushing. Fair for everyone.

Don’t they need a hand to guide the urine into the bowl? Are they WhatsApp’ing with one hand for 15 seconds?

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 21/02/2026 00:02

I think for me it’s that I’d have to touch a toilet seat to put it down before using it whereas if it’s already down I can just use the loo then wash my hands.

This.
Also why can’t men wee with the seat down. It’s still a large enough space?surely? Worst case is a bit of dribble on the seat ,easily wiped off with toilet paper.

StarlightLady · 21/02/2026 07:51

Eh? Who wants man wee on a toilet seat? And who wants to sit on a toilet seat that has been weed on and just wiped of with toilet paper. 🤮

This study is just about one particular type of bacteria and is looking at the hospital setting (where it is more of a danger for obvious reasons). A more recent study for anyone who is interested found that lid up vs down makes no difference in households! https://www.ajicjournal.org/article/S0196-6553%2823%2900820-9/fulltext I'm sure you will find studies supporting either argument. Personally I'm a lid up as like to double check toilet is clean after I've flushed.
