To think the test must be wrong

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

Even if that wasn't the case, not wanting a baby is reason enough to not go through with a pregnancy.

Yes, I agree, I was quoting someone who suggested otherwise btw.

Why did you think that you didn't have to still be careful?

She’s already answered this. Get off your high horse and offer some support.

I hope you can see the GP quickly. Let’s hope it’s a false negative, if not then you have options. Sending you lots of love xxx

BS. Yes you were.

It absolutely is ok for a woman to have an abortion for any reason she wants.

Hope that helps.

Do you not think OP has enough to think about without a holier than thou attitude thrown in. It was a mistake. I’m not advocating lazy or irresponsible behaviour or using abortion as contraception but that’s not what’s happening here. And even if it was, her body, her choice.

It is absolutely OK to have as many abortions as you want, for any reason. So take your holier than thou attitude and shove it where the sun don't shine.

chillidoritto · 16/02/2026 21:13

Thank you so much to everyone who has sent supportive and non judgemental replies. My last period was about 3 months ago, barely a bit of spotting here and there, which is normal for me. I honestly thought that because of all my symptoms, pregnancy just wouldn’t happen.

All sorts going through my mind. My last 2 babies were twins so there’s a potential of that happening again. Also the statistics are not on my side for having a healthy pregnancy or a healthy baby. With 5 other children, I just couldn’t cope with the unthinkable,

If I got to the early pregnancy assessment place will they give me a scan?

Littlebluebunny · 16/02/2026 21:13

I hope everything goes well Op. Please pay no attention to those up on their high horses.

Very few women would want to have a child at 49. I have found perimenopause to be brutal and the thought of having a baby at 49 would have finished me off tbh.

Do not feel any guilty for whatever decision you make. Your life is important too.

Had you gone a full year without a period, before starting HRT? Or had 3 consecutive FSH readings in the menopausal range? If not, then you should have been advised to continue contraception as well as HRT.

I think extremely common is over exaggerating a bit. It can happen yes. But it really isn’t extremely common.

My great-grandmother's youngest was born the same year as my grandmother's oldest and I recall one of my aunts having two sons, 21 yrs apart.

It is not quite so common nowadays because of modern contraception and other options, but people are still caught out. I hope that things work out okay for the OP.

BerryTwister · 16/02/2026 21:16

Sorry crossed post. I see you were still having periods.

Who is asking for your sympathy?

The OP, or any woman, can choose to have sex without contraception, and then choose to end any pregnancy that arises from that.

You don’t have to like it, but it doesn’t stop it being the truth.

You do realise that all methods of contraception aren’t 100% reliable? Please tell me you honestly realise that.

You also realise that some women are victims to sexual and coercive abuse that can lead to pregnancy?

You also realise that abortions aren’t a straightforward and easy decision, for a hell of a lot of women, if not all.

Please do some fucking research and stay the hell away from vulnerable women who are in need of support and advice.

What!!! Never knew - don't blame yourself. For what it's worth, I couldn't and wouldn't have another baby and I'm a bit younger than you. When we feel done, we're done.

Sending you massive hugs x

You do realise OP said “we haven’t been particularly careful” which negates your entire lecture?

The issue here is abortion as contraception, not abortion in terribly unfortunate situations.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/02/2026 17:35

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

At 49 id say it has the potential to be an absolute fucking disaster.

Off topic and unhelpful.
