To think the test must be wrong

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

PS I am nearly 49 ffs

Your body gets a last chance panic and surges (the hormones or whatever they are called needed to concieve) during menopause and lots of people have accidents - your body is trying to get its last chance

GreenPaperCut · 16/02/2026 17:37

Did you read OPs posts? She already has 5. Really harsh

And all the chances of baby not being ok

Tiramisutoyou · 16/02/2026 19:15

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/02/2026 18:33

I genuinely didn't think people could have babies at 49 and 50. I would think statistically the chances of miscarriage are extremely high, otherwise surely it would be common enough. 47 is the oldest I heard if. Sorry OP you are going through this. It's a cautionary tale

It’s only in this country we don’t go into 50s - I heard an Eastern European friend saying once people in his country have babies in 50s as normal

Op, I apologise for my question & hope that I haven't upset you.

I dont think you should feel the need to apologise..

There's no tone to a written message, and those that want to read it as though written in a nasty way and put you down will do so.

Others, like you would genuinely want to know why any one would think that they're not still able to conceive at 49, its not unheard of, as per post to be able to do so, its not exactly old either by today's standards.

I wonder if the OP, besides having her five children already, doesn't want to be in her late 60s/early 70s with her 6th child still at home.
In any case the decision is hers and hers only and nobody here should be judgemental.

NurseRunner · 16/02/2026 19:31

Completely understand your panic - I felt the same 7 years ago with a positive test (I had a coil insitu at the time!) I was in my early 40’s then, but definitely done with having children!
I am so glad we have options in this country. Termination is not an easy decision, and whilst I did feel incredibly sad - and a little guilty at the time; I have never regretted making that decision.
Best of luck with whatever you decide to do 💐

redskyAtNigh · 16/02/2026 19:31

I recently had an op and had to have a pregnancy test first - I am 53. The nurse said they assume you may be pregnant up to age 55.

OP - I hope you are ok, this must be a shock.

diddl · 16/02/2026 18:06

Why did you think that you didn't have to still be careful?

Why did you think this would be an appropriate or helpful question to ask?

Fuckinghell some people.

MinPinSins · 16/02/2026 19:36

OP, I'm not sure if this helps, but at 48 the loss rate is above 80%. It sounds like you are strongly considering a termination, and in those conditions I would probably find it easier knowing that was most likely the outcome anyway. Very few women who get pregnant age 48 end up with a baby.

Sunflower1650 · 16/02/2026 19:42

Sorry you are in this situation, OP. It must be such a shock. You have options, please don’t feel guilty. Have you taken another test just to make sure it’s definitely not a false positive? Although from reading comments on here it sounds like a false positive would be unlikely.

Behave.

I’m on HRT. I was told I still need to take precautions. Luckily I’m sterilised

Because Op might have been given or read bad advice.

Getting pregnant and carrying a healthy baby to term in your 50s is incredibly rare

OP - it could well be a false positive. I had the same (not very careful, few symptoms, faint positive) and totally freaked out. Started googling about raised hcg in peri and it is a thing. Obviously not well researched though because women 🙄 A blood test won't be any better as it also detects hcg so you'll need a scan to be conclusive. My period showed up before I got that far but it was definitely a salutory lesson! Ignore those who want to berate you for not bothering so much about contraception - pregnancy is miles more unlikely in late 40s

highfidelity · 16/02/2026 20:28

You are 49. So no, the test might not been wrong.

Has it been an entire 24 months without a single period? If it is not, then yes, there's a chance you are pregnant. Irregular periods in perimenopause, even if they're months apart still make pregnancy possible. Were you using contraception? If you were not, then yes, you could be pregnant.

Note. Over 50, it's 12 months without a period. Either way, and for reasons unknown, GPs aren't always vocal about this or the need to be on contraception during perimenopause and until it is certain menopause has been reached.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/02/2026 17:35

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

At 49 a pregnancy is statiscally unlikely to result in a healthy baby.

Newyearawaits · 16/02/2026 20:35

diddl · 16/02/2026 18:06

Why did you think that you didn't have to still be careful?

What is your point?
Are you trying to make OP feel guilty?
Totally unnecessary and insensitive.
I would assume that most 49 year old women would think that it's near impossible.
Sending you strength and support OP

DotAndCarryOne2 · 16/02/2026 20:36

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/02/2026 17:35

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

When you’re 49 and already have five children ? Not to mention the significantly increased risk of Downs and other disabilities.

FreeWheezin · 16/02/2026 20:40

Hi OP, just checking in to say its ok, many of us have been in similar predicaments. Sometimes its just helpful to know you're not alone. There are options for you as PP have said. If you decide you can't have another, thats truly ok. No guilt, no shame, you've raised a family already and its responsible to know when another would be too much.

SurreySenMum26 · 16/02/2026 20:46

Op your not the first and not be the last to presume this was impossible. Breath. Talk to the gp. Your not certain until you have a scan. Also unfortunately for some the odds of going full term are slim. So things might take their own turn soon. Don't beat yourself up. Your ovaries are out to for a last shot party.

TheYearofMagicalThinking · 16/02/2026 20:49

I'm so sorry, OP, what a shock. Ignore people who imply that you shouldn't have a termination. I am younger than you are and have had more than one termination, just because I didn't want to be pregnant.

TheYearofMagicalThinking · 16/02/2026 20:50

OSTMusTisNT · 16/02/2026 20:31

Even if that wasn't the case, not wanting a baby is reason enough to not go through with a pregnancy.

fetchacloth · 16/02/2026 20:54

Saucery · 16/02/2026 16:54

My GP was very clear at my HRT review that pregnancy would still be a remote possibility (am in my 50s), so I hope you can speak to someone asap about your result. You have options Flowers

Yes, I had the same warning from my GP before starting HRT. She told me that sometimes patients think that using HRT gives the same protection as the combined pill and it really doesn't.
