Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

Under aeroplane seats? How is a crate fitting there. There’s barely enough room for feet

Crates can only weigh a max of (I think) 8kg including the dog. People aren't taking Great Danes with them, it's small dogs only on most airlines, and they have to be crated the entire time and put under the seat.

I think it's only really in the US where people are allowed to take larger animals on seats etc.

With the crate thing, if we were back in the good old days where most dogs were just pets and most owners saw them as animals I'd have been ok with that. Now we are in the days where many dogs are used as substitutes for human relationships I'd be more concerned about owners pushing boundaries like insisting on getting the dogs out and having them on laps.

Except dogs in crates under seats is the norm across the world - I suspect most of the complainers on this thread have already been on flights with dogs or cats and are totally unaware because, well, the animal is just sat quietly and not bothering anyone.

I have an allergy to Dogs, my eyes swell, my lips swell, I get watery eyes, my breathing is effected, I get itchy all over .. I have a bit of a tough time of it.

If I went to an airline and said, I have a food allergy that does all of that, they make adjustments.

I could not sit next to, or near, a dog on a plane … 20 rows away fine. If airlines are letting dogs on, they need to specify rows of seats that are “dog free”.

I did request this from my local train company, but got nowhere.

If you're that allergic, it's your responsibility to tell the airline in advance so they can accomodate you.

..so I should anticipate that there may be a dog in the Cabin, despite never having seen one previously?

I’m also allergic to Cats, Horses, Dust, Sawdust, Pollen. Should I call then in advance in case a Cowboy gets on, and starts carving wood, in his dusty Stetson, whilst he presents a bouquet of flowers to his favourite cat?

Small dogs are the thin end of the wedge. Before long people will be insisting that their devil dogs sit with them on the plane, and not in a crate, but on their lap. Then they will go wild, savage people, the plane will crash and everyone will say "it was a lovely, well-behaved dog, how could this happen?"

Well, yes - because you could always encounter a dog on a plane - service dogs are allowed on every single airline the world over, after all.

If you have a severe allergy then it's your responsibility to inform the airline - just as people who are severely allergic to peanuts do every time they fly.

Well I will never fly with an airline that accepts dogs in the main cabin of the plane. In the hold, fine, but the cabin should be for humans only.

Then you should never fly again, as every single airline accepts service/guide dogs in the cabin as per the law.

Well, yes. Whats the alternative? All airlines in the world banning horse-riders and carpenters because apparently, someone somewhere on the internet says they're allergic?

Happens at least 3 times a day already. As we speak a plane has just crashed because of a bichon

Have you tried to inform airlines about this type of allergy? Ime if it’s not a nut allergy and you don’t carry an EpiPen they’re not interested.

I was told that due to information governance they could not tell me in advance if any assistance dogs were booked on the flight and would not inform me if one was booked after I had made my booking. The ability to swap seats should there be a dog close to my seat would depend on seat availability and the willingness of other passengers!

This was with EasyJet.

It's not that they're not interested, more that there's nothing they can do because they can't ban assistance dogs, whereas they can ban nuts.

You can't compare something that's a legal entitlement (a guide dog) with a choice (eating nuts).

I’m not trying to make that comparison.

A few posters have said that it’s the person with the allergies responsibility to inform the airline in advance. What I’m saying is that it’s pointless. We just have to dose up with medication and take our chances since there’s no way of finding out in advance if there is an assistance dog booked on a flight, or where it will be sitting. If I knew there was a dog booked to sit towards the front of a flight, I’d either book a different flight if this was an option, or pay extra to book seats at the back.

What if there is a dog who eats peanuts? Would that be allowed on a plane?
