Dogs & Aeroplanes

Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

I have a dog and I would 100% take him on a plane if I could. And I've been to John Lewis with him.

Perfectly happy thanks - in my clean house free from dog slobber

😂 This hilarious assumption that dogs just slobber everywhere. If there's dog slobber all over someones house then they should probably see a vet and clean their house but normally, no dog owners houses are not covered in slobber

Why did you take him to John lewis? I could understand a pet store or some thing but does he like shopping? Most dogs tend to like a runaround outdoors.

I’m not really seeing the equivalence here between dogs on planes and punching children, in fact I’d go so far as to say it’s a ridiculous equivalence and not worth continuing this argument. Good day to you.

Both can cause serious harm. Dogs can kill allergy sufferers and they can bite too.

But the point was that you don’t care about other people, you do whatever you like and don’t expect any courtesy back you say - so what if someone wants to punch you? Why shouldn’t they? They, by your own admission, owe you no courtesy.

Maybe this bitter, selfish attitude is why you say you’ve been a manic depressive since toddlerhood

Agree! I have a lot of dogs. They do not “slobber”? I’m sure some very specific breeds do, but none of mine.

Out of convenience.
I was around with the dog (who's a real suburban dog, comfortable both in forests and parks and in big cities) and needed to check something in JL.
I'm happy to report that no kid was bitten, no leg was peed on and as far as I know, the only casualty was my Monzo card after I purchased a pair of expensive pillows.

But other customers don't like dogs in shops. Why don't you leave him at home then shop as most dog owners manage to do? Can you imagine if every dog owner took their pets to the shopsk it'd be chaos. Do you let him sit on customers chairs in cafes out of interest?

You don’t like dogs in shops. But clearly, some customers DO like to take their dogs in shops. And JL allow it. Why do you expect everything to YOUR likes and preferences?

It isn't just me though, it is a common complaint that we see here and other social media platforms.

I like my dog, she has walks and lots of attention but she does not come shopping as A. There's no need and B. Out of consideration for others. Try it.

Well what people don't like isn't exactly my problem is it? I don't like cars, I'm not going to ask drivers to drive elsewhere. I don't like pop music, I'm not going to ask a shop to change playlist, am I? I can continue like that for hours.

I said I was around JL for something else. Going back home and drop the dog and go back to JL would have taken 2h minimum, just to avoid going to a place that I know is dog-friendly with a dog that I know behaves well, to do something that I know wouldn't take more than 10mins.

I go to many dog-friendly places and I'm yet to see any Hieronymus-Bosch-like dog-related chaos scene. Today in the cafe: 5 dogs. 0 drama.

Err no. YOU try it. How are you considering others who want to take their dogs to places they are allowed? You don’t like it? Go elsewhere. Other people like different things to you, that cannot be a revelation?
If a store allows dogs it is entirely reasonable for people to take their dogs there.
You don’t like it? Vote with your feet.

5 dogs in a cafe! Why? I've no idea why some dog owners don't realise this is very unfair to other customers. Please tell me you at least understand hygiene risks and don't allow your pooch to sit on customers chairs and lick your plate?

TBH I’ve never seen a dog in a cafe that wasn’t causing a nuisance, or had its bumhole on a chair, or didn’t have a dopey owner letting its lead stretch across an area where people walk.

I just don’t walk out and go somewhere with humans only.

Because it's a dog friendly cafe. Other customers seemed pretty ok, the cafe was full, as always, despite being terminally dog-friendly. It actually won a local business award recently.

Why not?

Go somewhere that doesn’t allow dogs if you find it so offensive.

Yes I’ve seen them in JL too. Crazy.

It's when you have witnessed staff in JL running about like mad in order to deal with a situation where a customer brought their labrador into the store. After sniffing around while the owner looked at blouses, it lifted its leg & took a pee on the clothes rail. Although I thought it was disgusting I have to admit I couldn't help laughing 😂

Oh well 🤷‍♀️

Nobody’s forcing you to go to JL or anywhere else that allows dogs. If you don’t like it, leave.

I’m due to travel on an 11 hour flight soon and the idea of my pet allergy kicking off is quite scary.

I have a lot of trouble breathing if exposed to most types of dog and cat dander.

So. Should tell my airline about my allergy?

who would have to change flights - the human passenger or the pet?

What a ridiculous question, of course you should tell the airline when booking, and flag it again to the flight crew before boarding. That’s literally how they manage seating and accommodations, whether that means moving you or the passenger with the dog.

Having a condition doesn’t automatically make you the main character of the flight. If pets are allowed, the policies are clear, and if your allergy is severe, the responsibility is on you to make people aware. Airlines and fellow passengers aren’t psychic or mind readers.

If you can’t open peanuts anywhere on a plane if someone is allergic, how are allergen particles from a dog or cat different? Presumably the issue is the air circulation means the allergens are spread?

They’re not really comparable. Peanut allergy can be life-threatening at tiny levels - it’s the protein, not the smell, and opening/crushing peanuts can spread protein onto surfaces and into the air, which can then be ingested.

Pet allergies are usually to dander and tend to cause sneezing/asthma rather than anaphylaxis, and you generally need much higher exposure.

Pet allergens are also already everywhere (on clothes, seats etc), so banning animals wouldn’t remove them, whereas not serving peanuts is easy.

Well I do complain and one cafe did ask the owner to put the dog under the table so there does seem to be some standards and consideration just a shame we have to point it out.

2026namechange · 06/02/2026 23:29

Wow you are the epitome of selfish dog owner - nobody else matters apart from you and your precious doggos. An extra bingo for hating on children too.

Nobody “needs” to take a dog anywhere quite frankly and yes the rights of people to not be made unwell do trump the whims of dog owners.

Or do you also think you should be allowed to eat nuts on planes and fuck anyone who might have an allergy?

Edited

That’s rich and hypocritical coming from someone trying to police dog owners in clearly dog-friendly spaces. You’re allowed to dislike dogs. You’re allowed to dislike children.

What you’re not entitled to do is control public life around your personal preferences, especially when assistance dogs exist and are essential for people who are blind or have disabilities.

If a business welcomes dogs, that’s their choice, complain all you want to them but telling people not to go without checking with the business owners just makes you look entitled, selfish, and unhinged.

The reality is, most people actually don’t mind sharing space with dogs. Pet industries and dog friendly places are thriving for a reason.

How long before a dog goes berzerk on a plane and starts savaging people who have nowhere to run?

Why would that happen when dogs are confined to crates under the seat? 🙄
