Dogs & Aeroplanes

Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

The way most people seem to behave on planes, I'd rather the average human went into the hold!

You must fly on budget hellhole, airlines then the destinations like benidorm

I've never seen any behaviour of the sort on any flight.I've ever been on and i've been on a lot.

Assuming quite a lot there, aren't we? No it wasn't a nasty airline, and I've never been to Benidorm in my life, and never will. It was a lovely city break, and actually the rude guy was very posh - he was just really rude with it. Or are you one of those who thinks that only the "little people" are capable of behaving badly? You've clearly never worked with professors. Some of the rudest people I've worked with.

If you can’t open peanuts anywhere on a plane if someone is allergic, how are allergen particles from a dog or cat different? Presumably the issue is the air circulation means the allergens are spread?

Because peanut allergies cause anaphylaxis and people can die.

Dog allergies most frequently cause runny eyes and sneezing and no one dies

Any allergen cause anaphylaxis. Nuts, milk, dogs, bananas, tea... anything
Its not just nuts.

I didn't say it was just nuts. The PP mentioned specific examples of dogs and nuts so I was responding to their specific question.

There is a research article that looked at analyphylaxis from animals. Analyphylaxis was shown to occur very very rarely in response to bites only. None of the animal bites causing analyphylaxis were by dogs. Most were hamster/gerbil type things.

Supposing the move is to New Zealand. You cant have a dog in a cabin or a hold for 20+ hours. Rehome the pet. Can't have it borh ways.

Actually, you can quite easily fly your dog to the other side of the world - it happens all the time 🤷‍♀️

gototogo · 06/02/2026 23:11

Im allergic to cats, getting worse too so if it becomes commonplace they must have a mechanism to not have them on board, just like peanuts, after all, me eating a snickers bar is less likely to be airborne than cat fur.

Loving24again · 06/02/2026 23:14

Meh. A couple of mine are teeny and would fly very quietly in a crate at my feet. You wouldn’t know they were there. Others of mine? I wouldn’t let anywhere near an aircraft!
And honestly, if it’s allowed by an airline? Suck it up buttercup!
I would frankly rather never, ever fly again with a child within 40 feet of me within an aircraft. You cannot buy that, even in First Class. We all have to tolerate things we don’t like. You get sneezy and runny eyes from a dog? I get a headache and no sleep when your child whines the entire time. Tis life.

2026namechange · 06/02/2026 23:17

@loving24again your comment is extremely ignorant. My dog allergy is not just a runny nose and itchy eyes. It is flu like symptoms, sinus headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms and lasts for at least 48 hours after your prolonged exposure. A child is a person, they have the right to be on planes. A dog is cargo - it can go in the hold.

I absolutely don’t care. Unruly children ruin a flight for hundreds of people. My dogs (who have never flown by the way, this is purely conjecture) MIGHT make someone a bit ill? No, your needs don’t trump mine. Or anyone else’s. You can pick a dog free airline.
If the airline allows it? Pick a different airline sweetie. I WISH I had an option for pick a child free airline!

Wow you are the epitome of selfish dog owner - nobody else matters apart from you and your precious doggos. An extra bingo for hating on children too.

Nobody “needs” to take a dog anywhere quite frankly and yes the rights of people to not be made unwell do trump the whims of dog owners.

Or do you also think you should be allowed to eat nuts on planes and fuck anyone who might have an allergy?

Imagine them annoying the cabin crew in the aisle. Dont think they won't.

So sick of having someone's filthy, wet dog bound up to me in a park, and when I recoil the owner says he or she is friendly. I don't care.Get your fucking dog away from me.

I agree so many people are dog crazy now that they think they trump humans.

A crying baby, a very young child kicking seats ...that's life.

Dogs do not trump humans.

Edit: sorry I quoted you by accident and don't know how to change it 😂

Ah, I see the classic 'I'd rather sit next to a dog than your child' crowd are here.
Children are human beings, FFS.
Anyway. I'm fine with this in cases where you absolutely must bring your dog abroad (such as moving country). I would find it ridiculous if all of a sudden everyone was bringing their pet abroad for a holiday. I don't know why you would want to travel with a pet unless absolutely necessary. I can't imagine its pleasant for an animal to be confined to a crate on a moving object surrounded by lots of smells and noises for hours on end (whether in the hold or in the cabin!)

I'd be happy to chat to a dog on my flight

Large dogs can have their own seats in America. I wouldn’t like loads of dogs barking on a plane but I’d love to bring mine, I always feel guilty leaving her. 🫣

RichPetuniaAgain · 06/02/2026 23:37

Personally, I’d be very happy with this, but I don’t have any allergies. On the other hand, my nephew does and needs an épi-pen with him at all times, so my vote would be that human health comes first and dogs should not be in the cabin.

ColdAsAWitches · 06/02/2026 23:59

Keepingthepeace9 · 06/02/2026 18:26

We are talking about risk mitigation. The probability of becoming ill with an allergy to dogs is far greater if its a dog friendly flight compared to the probability of a situation such as you describe in your post. Airborn food allergy is extremely rare although peanuts are banned on most if not every airline now. Dog dander allergy is extremely common. The two can't be compared.

Not to detail the thread, but there isn't a single airline that has banned peanuts. A few have stopped serving them, but none can stop you from bringing and eating your own, or any foods that contain them. Saying that most, if not all airlines have banned them is completely wrong.

Apologies here. I meant to add they are banned if a passenger highlights a serious allergy, at least in the flights I've been on & rightly so.

I don’t know how the system works for declaring an allergy but I’ve been on several
flights in the last couple of years (in SE Asia) where bags of nuts were part of the snack handed out by the air stewards.

Dogs are already in the cabin on many flights across the world. Even on flights out of the UK with certain carriers.

Oh come on. Ultimately all everyone cares about is themselves and their desires and maybe their immediate family. So of course a dog owner is going prioritise their dog over your kids, just as you prioritise your kids over their dog. Hardly a shocking revelation that people want their own needs met over others is it? And no, for the record I don’t care about your kids or your nut allergy.

With respect a babies poo is contained within a nappy & quickly dealt with & the nappy disposed of in a sealed bag. The huge difference is it's not on the floor of the cabin where crew could be left to deal with it. It's a rare occurrence for someone to be physically sick on an aeroplane & they can make for the toilet. There is absolutely no comparison.

I was violently sick on a plane once, long haul overnight flight. Sod’s Law dictated the toilet was occupied at the precise time I needed it. I had no time to try to make it to another one.

OonaStubbs · 07/02/2026 08:31

Putting a dog on a plane to take it to the other side of the world is just selfish. Who are you doing it for? The dog? Or you?

This2shallpas · 07/02/2026 08:39

OvernightBloats · 06/02/2026 17:08

What would happen if a stressed dog poos in the aeroplane? Who cleans it up? Imagine the smell! I bet the responsibility would fall on to the cabin crew to clean up mess. That is so beyond what they signed up for!

I agree.

I worked in retail and cafes back off and on from 2000-2010 off and on. I sometimes think I’m glad things were different back then. I never had to worry about cleaning up dog crap, or getting unruly dogs under control as dogs weren’t allowed in the shops and cafes I worked in.

I was thinking of looking into a part time role at a local bookshop just for fun on top of my freelancing but I see so many dogs in there I’d rather not.

Onleemoi · 07/02/2026 09:15

I used to be a baggage handler. I’d never put my dog in the bulk. They were shut in there for hours in the dark and cold, without water or food. Sometimes medicated, sometimes not. They’d cry when I tried to shut the doors.

I’d be over the moon to be sitting next to one though.

FastFood · 07/02/2026 09:19

Dogs or cats on flights in Europe are rare. I don't think I had ever seen one on a flight.
As far as I know, there's a limited amount of dogs allowed on a flight.

It's really not a big deal, if you spontaneously combust when breathing the same air as a dog, just ask for another seat. You'll have time to start a thread about your ordeal before takeoff.
