Dogs & Aeroplanes

Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

Good for you. I strongly feel we need to speak up about not wanting dogs around. The problem is the type of person who generally owns a dog and thinks they should be allowed everywhere (as demonstrated on this thread) is bullish, selfish and misanthropic. People that don’t like it tend to just bow out of the way, roll their eyes and tolerate it because they do not want a confrontation with the dog person - who, again as demonstrated on this thread will act all offended if you dare to ask them to move their animal. Over time this has developed into a sense of entitlement and dog people think their behaviour is okay because no one has told them it isn’t. Well it isn’t okay. Dogs are disgusting and dangerous and they need to fuck off out of human spaces.

Exactly. On the train journey mentioned upthread I was baffled that when I was moving to another carriage away from the woman with the dog, she thought it was ok for her dog to be sat in the aisle blocking the way. I had a suitcase and a backpack and she expected me to leap over the dog or something?

I wasn’t having it. I’m sure if I had kicked it by accident or tripped over and hurt myself I’d be blamed, so I firmly told her to move and keep her dog well out the way. Utterly bizarre I had to tell her this but I have seen others quietly roll their eyes then step over dogs so not everyone wants to call it out which is understandable.

I later emailed the train company about it suggesting they provide dog free carriages which they do in some countries. But they just kind of gave me a generic response quoting their dog policy which says dogs aren’t meant to be in aisles or bothering people.

I mean it’s all very well them saying that is the policy but the fact is it’s often not enforced and it’s not always easy to find staff on a train to report these things.

If more would write in and/or mention it to train staff in person they might listen and do something.

You might be a doormat but I'm not. Imagine if everyone just accepted everything without complaint 🙄.

Like I said, complain all you like.

Blueeyedstork · 07/02/2026 14:21

No simply because you would get idiot owners who get them out of there travel cage or let them wander round the plane. My friend was on a plane in the USA and the dog did a massive shit in the middle of one of the seats (women left it on seat while she went to the loo) and people were throwing up with the smell.

Loving24again · 07/02/2026 14:55

Some of these replies are hilarious in their irony. Dog owners are “selfish and entitled” but if you were to book a seat on a flight where dogs are allowed, you’d complain about it? Rather than just….booking a dog free flight, of which there are many? Simply because you believe dogs should not be allowed on flights? THAT is selfish and entitled. And really quite odd? Do you honestly believe all businesses exist solely to meet YOUR needs and preferences?

How on earth do those people cope when babies have poonamis, or vomit all over themselves?

Wish I hadn't read this 😫

At least when babies poop in an aeroplane although it can stink, invariably it's dealt with immediately & nappy disposed of in a timely manner.

Dogs in cabin are already common in a lot of parts of Europe - the U.K not allowing dogs to arrive in the cabin is one of the few that doesnt, we regularly fly between countries with the dog - who goes in a bag under the seat in front so I'm not sure where the idea of them just chilling on a seat infront came from tbh.
IME, if you travel around Europe on planes, chances are there is at least one dog on your flight, but they are in airline bags under the seat not just roaming around like they're are crufts.

As far as allergies go, we have once been moved because someone had a dog allergy so we were separated as far apart as possible. I have never known our or any other dog to shit on the plane, I've only heard a dog bark once and I can't speak for anyone else but ours has never weed in her bag on the plane.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 07/02/2026 15:13

igelkott2026 · 07/02/2026 13:53

A special crate is ok, but no doubt the owners would whine about their fur baby being confined and moan and moan and moan until the airline capitulates and allows them to sit under the seat once the seat belt lights have been switched off. And then of course they'd try to wander around.

This doesnt happen in Europe and UK airlines. Dogs are required to stay in the bag, they are strictly not allowed out, there is no taking your dog for a walk around the plane.

Bloody dogs everywhere

In John Lewis near me. Who takes a dog clothes shopping ??

VickyEadieofThigh · 07/02/2026 16:39

Animals imported to the UK by plane must go through the Animal Reception Centre at the airport of entry (not all UK airports have these). This is to ensure that each animal is checked so that our strict requirements are met. Allowing animals into the cabin on flights into the UK would mean an animal not meeting requirements would not be properly quarantined.

👌🏼 Worth reposting.

The power dynamic is totally unfair when you just don’t want to be bothered by dogs or dog behaviour or fur, snot and slobber but entitled selfish people think their own animal should have more rights than you. It is an increasing problem.

It's so unfair on dogs. They want to be out on fun walks, running about not trailing about shops or sat in costa while their lazy owners stuff their faces.
I have a dog she neither comes shopping with me, goes on planes nor sits on customers seats in cafes.

But you can already bring them in by ferry without these restrictions, as long as they have their pet passports. No special facilities required. And large airports such as Dublin, in Ireland where animal quarantine rules are just as strict as the UK's, have no issues.

Speak for yourself

Many of us do care about others and accept that living in the world requires consideration for more than just ourselves.

If you don’t care about someone’s else’s kid or peanut allergy then fine - but you have absolutely no right for anyone to show care, respect or consideration for you or your child. They can push in front of you in queues, barge you out the way, spit on your child, thump either of you and steal your plane seat. Because why should they care about you, right?

This isn’t the gotcha you think it is because I don’t expect anyone to care about me except, well, me. I literally just said that it’s my belief everyone only cares about themselves. Even the ones who proclaim to always think of others are doing that for themselves, because they think it makes them better and they like the feeling it gives them to tell themselves what a wonderful considerate person they are. So naturally people’s wants and needs are going to clash.

thesealion · 07/02/2026 19:33

This thread is hilarious. Both the pro dog and anti dog people hold their views for the same reason: they’re thinking of themselves and their needs. You’re two sides of the same coin. Do the mental gymnastics all you like to make it about being “considerate” but the fact is, you don’t want a dog on a plane/bus/shop because YOU don’t like it. It is entirely about you and your preferences. Same as the dog owners wanting their dogs to access those places. Everyone is equally as selfish as each other so I guess we all just have to accept that we go through life encountering things we don’t like, huh?

So you’d be absolutely fine with your child getting punched in the face by a stranger who just because they’re putting themselves first, yes?

And actually people do generally realise that not being a total cunt is a reciprocal act, so don’t go around being total cunts to others. Nothing to do with telling themselves they’re wonderful. And lots of people ARE wonderful and considerate - and it’s not being fake just because you’re a selfish person

I'm a dog owner and I don't want mine or anyone else's dogs in the cabin on a plane. It isn't fair on the dog or other passengers.

I’m not really seeing the equivalence here between dogs on planes and punching children, in fact I’d go so far as to say it’s a ridiculous equivalence and not worth continuing this argument. Good day to you.

That’s your opinion. Doesn’t make it any better than someone else’s opinion that taking a dog on a plane is fine. I don’t even have a dog, I just think the superiority complex some people have because they wouldn’t take a dog on a plane is very funny.
