Dogs & Aeroplanes

Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

Well he maybe needs to drink more. To not let a dog out for a wee for 8hrs is unusual.

He is fine, thanks all the same. He just prefers to wee on his walks, so he can let all the other local dogs know of his existence!

He's mostly asleep / chilling out during the day anyway. It's a hard life!

They can.

However dogs and cats are already allowed in the cabin on flights the world over. It's nothing new.

Just because it's nothing new does not mean it's ok and we should just all tolerate it. I like dogs, we have a dog there is no chance she comes in cafes shops or goes on planes.

Dorisbonson · 07/02/2026 13:01

I'd prefer a little dog near me to lots of humans. Human behavior on planes can be awful. A sweet little dog would be fine. I prefer my dog to lots of people.

OonaStubbs · 07/02/2026 13:10

Humans that misbehave on planes should be put on a permanent no-fly list. No second chances, you misbehave once and that's it. And dogs should not be allowed on planes either. There is no reason for a dog to be on a plane.

And that's totally fine. But you don't get to say that other people can't make different choices.

What about working dogs - military dogs? Guide dogs? Drug detection dogs?

Well I do because I'm also a paying customer and if we all complained about stuff like this companies would review their services.
I do not want to sit next to a dog on a plane.

Then don't pick an airline that allows dogs.

Surely, surely you can see drug detection dogs and guide dogs are a necessity not a personal choice?

The other day I went into a phone shop. The first smell that hit me was wet dog. This is because it was raining in my town and there was a dog in there with the only other customer.

I told the sales assistant trying to help me that I would have to come back later and was leaving due to the wet dog smell.

I’m sure he didn’t lose any sleep but I think more businesses need to be aware that we are not all thrilled to be around dogs.

I'll pick a flight that suits my needs time wise and destination wise and complain if there's a dog on it. As we should all do.

PP said there was "no reason for a dog to be on a plane".

I was giving a list of very valid reasons.

I worked in a shop where we'd occasionally get someone complaining about dogs being allowed.

But they were massively outnumbered by those who LOVED being able to bring their dogs, and as a successful business is about making money, it meant that we generally sympathised with them but ultimately ignored their complaints.

Frequency · 07/02/2026 13:36

It is already a thing, has been for years. We looked into when DD wanted to go to Turkey for a few months. A few UK airlines take dogs, I can't remember which ones, but we had options. Dogs have to stay in a special crate under the seat. If they don't fit, they have to go in the hold, and it is max one dog per person.

As I said, I doubt the employee lost any sleep over me leaving 😂 but I think it’s important or at least worthwhile for everyone who objects to speak their mind the same way those who do like being able to bring their dogs or seeing other dogs there might express their opinion too.

The business can and will decide what to do with that info of course, but at least I’ve spoken my mind and made them aware not everyone is happy with it all.

I know a cafe near me recently become dog-free again except in the outdoor seating .

And a few years back a shopping centre that ran a dog-friendly trial ended up banning dogs again when they had a deluge of complaints.

luckylavender · 07/02/2026 13:37

Bloody dogs everywhere

Unless the person you spoke to was the owner, your complaint won't make any difference either way, though.

You need to write to head office or the business owner with complaints like that - speaking to the shop assistants is utterly pointless.

Good for you. I strongly feel we need to speak up about not wanting dogs around. The problem is the type of person who generally owns a dog and thinks they should be allowed everywhere (as demonstrated on this thread) is bullish, selfish and misanthropic. People that don’t like it tend to just bow out of the way, roll their eyes and tolerate it because they do not want a confrontation with the dog person - who, again as demonstrated on this thread will act all offended if you dare to ask them to move their animal. Over time this has developed into a sense of entitlement and dog people think their behaviour is okay because no one has told them it isn’t. Well it isn’t okay. Dogs are disgusting and dangerous and they need to fuck off out of human spaces.

Yeah I haven’t got round to it as it happened recently but yes that is what I usually do for any issue with a business - write a complaint to the relevant person because yeah as I said sometimes change does happen.

My local garden centre banned dogs and I was really happy - finally somewhere I could actually go that isn't a dog exercise area. But I went in just before Christmas - and of course - they've capitulated to the dog owners who can't leave their dogs at home while they go to the garden centre for an hour. It's so horrible waiting in a queue to pay with dogs sniffing at you - I have stopped going again, And I feel really sorry for the staff who have to clean up after them.

A special crate is ok, but no doubt the owners would whine about their fur baby being confined and moan and moan and moan until the airline capitulates and allows them to sit under the seat once the seat belt lights have been switched off. And then of course they'd try to wander around.

Complaining about dogs is like supporting single sex spaces for women. In the same way that I would never say at work that I think male-bodied people should stay out of womens' sport, toilets and the ladies pool at Hampstead, I would never say I don't like dogs either. It Is Not Allowed.

FastFood · 07/02/2026 11:58

And so can many other things...

Also, dogs can already travel by train, bus, tube, boat, uber and yet, the number of people dying because of a dog in-the-coach-related asthma attacks seems to be very low (although according to mumsnet its probably the first cause of death in the country)

No, that's chicken pox, followed closely by contracting covid from sweaty runners around every corner during the lockdowns (and probably now, too).
