Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

Yeah it was either that or eat nothing and as I’ve previously had an eating disorder I try to eat. If I’m tired I go with protein, veg, carb in whatever combo

maybe next time I should just have the veg but I didn’t want to bin the fries I’ve already bought

The bigger the fries the lower the surface area to absorb fat. Go chunky chips 😃

I would probably have 3 fish fingers not 5, but I'd have pretty much all of the rest, and I'm not a huge eater. That's not a massive amount of food.

How rude to comment on what you're eating. I HATE people who do that.

We have had words before but it was good natured tonight. He gets it from my mum who was very abusive to me about my weight, took me to WW at 13 when I was a size 12 and she was a 24, would constantly comment how big I was, ugly, fatter than her etc
I have managed to drill into him it’s unacceptable and he’s much better than when she was alive

The infamous MN competitive under-eaters will be sprinting to this post.

I prefer ice cubes with artificial sweetener.

A third of that would be enough for me but we’re all different

So you’d have 1.66 fishfingers - 80 calories
1/3 of a pack of micro steam veg - 25 calories
1/3 of a serving of Leon’s waffle fries - 116 calories

approx 220 calories

Really? Are your evening meals usually less than 250 calories?

Surely, that isn’t enough for an adult woman of any height/size?

This appears to either be untrue, or it’s the portion size of someone who is unwell or struggles with disordered eating.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 05/02/2026 19:30

But how is the OP going to know who is a competitive under eater and who just couldn't eat that much?

Theres no such thing as a 'competitive undereater' any more than there are competitive overeaters.

Neither of my parents would be able to eat that plateful. My partner would put all that on his plate but then leave half of the potatoes and most of the veg.

People have different appetities and capacities, theres nothing wrong with that

Unless posters like the one you're replying to think that unless everyone agrees with OP that its the 'right' size portion, they're all lying.

Less than 2 fish fingers and a couple of the potatoe waffles? My very small and skinny 5 year old eats more than that.

ZenNudist · 05/02/2026 20:05

Damnd · 05/02/2026 19:20

Three fingers for me, same veg, less fries

Ditto but no judgement on you

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/02/2026 20:06

@fishfingergate Morrisons own brand pack of 10 fishfingers (haddock) are nice, as are the Sainsbury pack of 30 cod fishfingers...
We always have 5 each and some spicy potato wedges and baked beans.

The only thing I'd fault is the veg.

Sweetcorn makes me 🤢

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 05/02/2026 20:06

This is the kind of food that has considerably more calories than most people would assume based on the volume...

is that what your father was getting at?

I personally would want an additional fish finger but no waffles.

plsdontlookatme · 05/02/2026 20:06

OP just saw that you're 5'11! Notwithstanding health issues which make it difficult to lose weight, your daily energy needs will be quite different to the average woman's - I'm your height and active, and I have developed a thick skin when it comes to eating out with other women!

BlimeyOReillyO · 05/02/2026 20:06

fishfingergate · 05/02/2026 19:40

I did have sweet chilli sauce but I put that on when I sit down, or it risks sliding into the chips then Envy

Now that’s unreasonable! Sweet chilli sauce has no place with fish fingers!

mayo or salad cream

the portion size is fine.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 05/02/2026 20:06

I would easily eat that and then still be hungry for something sweet. I'm a healthy, towards the lower end, BMI.

It actually has far less calories thatn you would assume, most people posting the suggested calories of around 800 are way off the mark. More like about 500 ish

JohnTheRevelator · 05/02/2026 20:07

Excuse my typo - should have said 'there'll be' not 'they'll be'. Edit button wouldn't work for some reason.

Leon waffle fries, garlic and herb ones
don’t usually buy them but I did an Ocado shop and they were on offer

That 5 items for a tenner on Ocado at the moment is a belter!

Better believe our freezer is full of Leon waffle fries and Itsu soup dumplings! 😄👌

FurForksSake · 05/02/2026 19:26

lets add it up, 150-200 calories for the fish fingers, 200-250 for the waffle fries, maybe 50 for the veg? So it’s maybe 500 calories if you add no butter or sauces.

Seems ok. I wouldn’t eat that many waffle fries or fish fjngers as I have a smaller appetite, I’d probably add baked beans or a giant blob of sauce and end up at the same number of calories.

The plate maybe makes it look more? Or encourage you to fill it?

She was asking about the quantity though.

Competitive undereating is definitely a thing. It doesn't just mean anyone with a smaller appetite.

Kittyfleur · 05/02/2026 20:08

Totally depends on your height, current weight and typical daily energy expenditure. But I really wish people wouldn’t make comments like your dad did. You wanted to eat it and it was going to cheer you up (until he piped up), so don’t worry about it.

Berlinlover · 05/02/2026 20:08

I would definitely eat that and I’m a size 8.

Maybe it exists, but it's not just someone who finds this plate too big!

RobertMcnamara · 05/02/2026 20:08

@fishfingergate
Why do you require the opinions of random people about the size of your dinner ?

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 05/02/2026 20:09

I probably would have 3 fish fingers rather than 5. But who am I to talk. I had a giant portion of doner meat, chips and salad for tea. Came back late from parents evening and I just fancied it. Haven’t had anything like that in ages.

as long as you’re generally healthy a bit of stodge every now and again does you good!

It is - ime - very easy to underestimate the calories in breaded and or fried food…

It is, if they've commented on it in a "surely you won't eat ALL that" manner.

That would be my portion plus some choc afterwards for pud! Healthy weight/ size 10/ late 40s
