Is this too big a portion?

Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

Would I put 5 fish fingers on my plate, no but would I scoff the extra fish fingers after dinner tidying up, yes! 😂

CactusSwoonedEnding · 05/02/2026 20:09

It completely depends on what your body is used to, your current overall weight and activity levels. Some people would be fine with half that, some would feel starving with any less. Personally I'd serve myself 3 fishfingers but really want 4 and feel peckish afterwards, but would be fine with about two-thirds that much potatoes and would have about the same amount of the other veg as you, so overall only a bit less than you - but you and I have different bodies and it's ok. Your dad was mean to be judgy about the volume. It's not up to him.

I don't judge your food choices at all and totally understand about the necessity of quick oven food sometimes, but I do find that minimally processed "real" food with wholegrain carbs is a lot more filling and I am satisfied with less

Happyjoe · 05/02/2026 20:10

Seems ok to me! Not too unhealthy anyway as treats go, veggies and protein and the fries are good for the soul :-)

Kittyfleur · 05/02/2026 20:08

Totally depends on your height, current weight and typical daily energy expenditure. But I really wish people wouldn’t make comments like your dad did. You wanted to eat it and it was going to cheer you up (until he piped up), so don’t worry about it.

Some people can't judge portions though and put on weight because of it.

I remember two girls I knew as a student, both of them overweight at a time when it wasn't so common, both of them wondering why!

wfhwfh · 05/02/2026 20:10

It is really rude to comment on what other’s eat - so dont feel you have to defend yourself.

Older people do have a much smaller appetite. Once you lose the “young person’s metabolism” you are not hungry the same. So its normal for your dad to have a smaller calorie requirement than you.

Theres no such thing as a 'competitive undereater' any more than there are competitive overeaters.

Neither of my parents would be able to eat that plateful. My partner would put all that on his plate but then leave half of the potatoes and most of the veg.

People have different appetities and capacities, theres nothing wrong with that

Unless posters like the one you're replying to think that unless everyone agrees with OP that its the 'right' size portion, they're all lying.

Is this your first day on Mumsnet?

Cankerousa · 05/02/2026 20:10

Oh no, that is far too much!

My 6ft rugby playing DH would only eat a 10th of that.

Me? I survive on the dew from a single blade of grass and the burning hatred I have for fat people.

(Am I mumsnetting right?)

Op, you can't really judge a single meal like that. It is all in context with what else you've eaten that day, your height, your sex, how much exercise you do, your muscle mass etc.

That looks like it could be a normal 'I'm tired today' dinner for most adults, I wouldn't stress about it.

Happyjoe · 05/02/2026 20:11

Ps, it's very much a dad thing to say too :-)

CelticSilver · 05/02/2026 20:11

Where's the ketchup?

A WHOLE BLADE OF GRASS!!! Are you very fat? I couldn't manage that much.

That 5 items for a tenner on Ocado at the moment is a belter!

Better believe our freezer is full of Leon waffle fries and Itsu soup dumplings! 😄👌

Edited

Yes! I got frozen mango to make smoothies and the organic base mix

Meant to say your portion falls within recommended calories for an evening meal OP, and I could certainly eat that much (I’m a healthy weight, but have been overweight).

CelticSilver · 05/02/2026 20:11

Where's the ketchup?

In the bin after I realised it had been unopened for an unspecified amount of time and went out of date July last year….

@fishfingergate
Why do you require the opinions of random people about the size of your dinner ?

Just a conversation like most threads on here
same reason people want opinions on next door neighbours, parking, children’s behaviour and clothes

whistlesandbells · 05/02/2026 20:13

I can’t speak for you personally. I’d have 4 fishfingers - grilled. Twice the amount of veg. I’d like your carb serving but would have to have less.
I like your meal OP.

auserna · 05/02/2026 19:43

That didn't take long.

@auserna

are people not allowed to be honest?! Or do you want them to lie and say “oh no, OP, that’s a tiny portion, I’d have double that, eat up”?

HowManyMoreTimesMustYouBeTold · 05/02/2026 20:15

I've seen (and eaten) bigger dinners than that! A third of it is vegetables, anyway.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/02/2026 20:15

Idontspeakgermansorry · 05/02/2026 20:09

It is, if they've commented on it in a "surely you won't eat ALL that" manner.

Not really. I find it a big plate, but I'm not an undereater.

Also, OP should have put in her first post that she's 5'11" - it's quite relevant!

123teenagerfood · 05/02/2026 20:15

I would eat 2 fish fingers, half the pots and a it more veg.

I honestly never think about my height TBH! Maybe as people seem a lot taller now than when I was a teen?

OP posts:
Mwnci123 · 05/02/2026 20:17

No

sparrowhawkhere · 05/02/2026 20:17

I could eat that now (minus the potato) and I’ve already had my tea 😀but then that’s why I’m overweight

It's still pretty tall for a woman. It means you can eat a lot more than me so my initial opinion of your plate has to be reconsidered.

I sympathise with you working in a cold environment though. What kind of work is it that's 12C?
