Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

I like fish fingers. And waffles. Sometimes a McDonald’s breakfast
I also cook from scratch and make my own bread

It's just semantics. I went out for lunch in a wanky gastropub last week.
I had a fishfinger sandwich fish goujons in farmhouse granary bread with dressed leaves & pickled vegetables. Yum!

Your meal is unremarkable IMO. 18 pages of MN chatter though!

Your Dad does need to eat more veg though.

One fish finger would fill me up for a week.

God, you glutton. One fish finger does me for a month. Your food bills must be through the roof! 😆

I eat 40% of that. 2 fish fingers, half the veg and less than half the fried potato things. It’s a lot of food. I expect you to have a manual labour type job.

That would fit on a side plate. Don't you eat meals from a dinner plate?
I reckon someone with a manual job who'd had a regular breakfast and lunch (porridge or toast and then a sandwich) would need a lot more than what OP had.

Funny you mention that as I do eat from a small/side plate.
Dinner plates are too large.

GarlicBound · 05/02/2026 23:57

I sometimes entertain myself by imagining MN's horrified response to my enormous dinners 😂 Your dad's a weirdo, OP.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 05/02/2026 23:58

I'm 50+ and on WLI so eat like a bird, but I could eat that amount easy, and it's about the same size as my (one) main meal of the day.

(I wouldn't though - all the meals in OP's photos look pretty grim to me.)

Mine are 30cm! And piled high, foods touching all over the place.

I am not overweight.

McGregor33 · 05/02/2026 23:59

I eat plates like this at least twice a week 🙈 yours wouldn’t fill me.

Same! The plate op posted would be a starter for me 🤣🤣

Three fingers for me, same veg, less fries

Same here, except I just wouldn't eat those potato lattice things. I'm not sanctimonious about food. Will eat cake, crisps, chocolate, cheese, biscuits and normal chips/fries etc freely. But those premade potato shapes are a step too far, whatever the portion size.

So I'd have 3 fish fingers, all the veg and for a lazy dinner, either some Idaho mash or 2 slices brown bread and butter with it.

Then you must be fairly tall.
I am quite small.
Stunted due to childhood malnutrition technically.
But I like to think of my small size as being a green, eco-efficient human.
I just need less food.

Benmac · 06/02/2026 00:10

We had fish fingers recently for the first time in years. They came in a pack of 10. Realised why when they were out of the box. Seriously small. 5 each was probably the equivalent of 3 old ones.

Idaho mash is even more processed than those lattice fries!

I am slim (borderline underweight) and would eat that minus 1 fish finger.

This isn't a criticism but as an aside, your plate itself is quite big. If you are trying to eat less (not saying you should!) I think smaller plates can help with this.

If you are underweight you shouldn’t really be giving other people advice on what they should be eating.

I hope you get the support you are in need of.

IchiNiSanShiGo · 06/02/2026 01:56

I’m an entire foot shorter than you at 4’11, and I don’t think that’s a particularly excessive amount of food.

The photos of your salads look amazing by the way, really appetising.

I know you say you’ve had an eating disorder in the past, I think posting on here asking for comments on portion size can be really damaging. People are so so quick to criticize with no consideration for the consequences of that.

Eat what you want, and is enough to fuel your body for the day.

HappiestSleeping · 05/02/2026 21:47

@fishfingergate I am late to this party but my comment is "you lightweight".

This is my dinner yesterday. There are 4 chicken thighs under there.

I want this one, but roast chicken breast please!

@fishfingergate I'd be satisfied after 5 fish fingers, but I'd eat them on the hoof with my erm (fish) fingers. I'd probably have 2 wrapped in a piece of bread with some salad cream. Yes, salad cream for fish fingers, never mayo! Or brown sauce oddly.

moolady1977 · 06/02/2026 02:05

I'd eat that and then be looking for something sweet to finish off with . for me it's just right

JMSA · 06/02/2026 03:29

I could manage that no problem at all 😁

That would have been useful information from the start - you're taller than an average man. Of course most women are smaller and therefore eat less than you will need to.

iloveeverykindofcat · 06/02/2026 04:40

I'd eat that OP. Maybe not all the fish fingers (well, veggie equivalent for me) but certainly most of it. I'm underweight and have been my whole life, and have a high calorie burn (no car, I'm a swimmer). If I'd not had much lunch I'd certainly put that down.

Preparing to be flamed here but I don't quite believe the competetive undereaters on this site who are apparently a "healthy weight" yet would eat no more than 1200 calories, half a potato and no bread ever. The math doesn't math, nor does it line up with well, how people eat in the real world.

Thepossibility · 06/02/2026 04:52

That's roughly what I would have and I'm a pretty small person.

dayslikethese1 · 06/02/2026 05:03

You're much taller than average woman so will have higher TDEE plus impossible to comment on someone's portion size without knowing what else they ate that day as some ppl like to do TOMAD or OMAD depending on when their hunger falls, activities and other factors.

Meadowfinch · 06/02/2026 05:10

If those fish fingers are normal size, that is an absolutely HUGE plate. It's more like a tray.

BlimeyOReillyO · 06/02/2026 05:50

Womaninhouse17 · 05/02/2026 21:37

Looks like a meal for two to me. I'd never have more than 3 fish fingers but I am constantly amazed at how much other people put on their plates.

A meal for two? 5 year olds? Not adults surely!
