Is this too big a portion?

Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

What’s wrong with making better choices?! Those potato waffles are terribly unhealthy and same for the fish fingers, both are UPF. I suggested easy swaps for the OP when she is tired. Not sure what you thought was so offensive. I did say as a one off it was ok but if she wanted to lose weight these were options.

So you answered a question no one asked.

Well done you.

The plates are big, square and ugly brown. If I win the lottery I’m going to smash them up in some rage room and buy new nice ones

🤣🤣🤣

bibliomania · 05/02/2026 22:18

Too many peas. I don't like peas.

@fishfingergatejudging by what you said about your mum I’m not surprised you had an ED OP.

A study found that the best predictor of a daughter’s eating behaviour was the mother’s level of dietary restraint and her perceptions of the risk of her daughter becoming overweight (Birch and Fisher, 2000).

She was just mad I wasn’t a 5ft size 6 ballerina type
frankly given her brother was a heavyweight boxer and her dad a wrestler, I’m not quite sure why she expected me to be tiny
I look perfectly normal if I stand next to family, we are all broad shouldered and tall

A lot of fish fingers but overall thats a normal sized meal

Bloozie · 05/02/2026 22:24

Dear lord you can never have too many fish fingers. All the people saying they'd only have 2. It's not worth turning the oven on for two...

It's the perfect amount of fishfingers. I'd have more veg and fewer waffle things. But broadly speaking, anyone judging portion size can naff off.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/02/2026 22:24

Looks fine to me.

My, just turned, 2yr old DGS has 3 fish fingers.

If you’re overweight (be honest with yourself), it’s too much. If you’re normal weight and body fat %, it’s acceptable. It’s that simple.

ImFineItsAllFine · 05/02/2026 22:31

I could easily eat 5 fish fingers. I might have less potato in the interests of 'being good', but in reality I could polish off the meal in the OP photo with no trouble.

That’s not true though is it? The calorie count on it isn’t that high. Depends what else you’ve eaten and what you’ve done whether it’s ’too much’ but it’s very unlikely it’s going to be as the main meal for an adult.

The airfryer has been a boon for that, I can only eat around 2 fishgingers, saves wasting the oven.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 05/02/2026 22:36

Fish fingers aren't exactly filling, I'd eat 3 just snacking out of the air fryer on the way to dishing up. I'm 5ft and a healthy weight and thing if I ate your dinner I'd be snaffling around the kitchen in hours time feeling peckish.

We do homemade fish fingers and chips and my 1yo would eat that without any issue! Honestly no idea how the public are so overweight when most of this thread are adults claiming 2 fish fingers is all they'd eat!

DearHorse · 05/02/2026 22:36

No, not too much, I could (and would) easily eat that

You can’t possibly know if it’s ’too much’, overweight or not, without knowing what else the OP eats in a day and how active she is.

TheActualQueen · 05/02/2026 22:38

This thread is making me crave fish fingers!

LongGinShortTonic · 05/02/2026 22:43

If I wasn’t in bed I’d be making a fishfinger sandwich.

Is that too much for breakfast? Do I have to wait til lunch?

I don't think most people are judging. OP asked whether we thought it was too much so people are just giving their opinions.

5128gap · 05/02/2026 22:44

5 fish fingers is less than 300 calories. The waffle fries maybe 400. Veg, another 100 maybe. 800 calories for an evening meals allows you another 1000 calories for everything else, more if you're young, big built and/or active. So depending on what you've eaten the rest of the day, that's about right, possibly even on the light side.

Catchycatchytune · 05/02/2026 22:46

I have five fish fingers, with chips and peas. I don’t eat desserts. I think your portion size is ok.

Parentingconfusing · 05/02/2026 22:46

Entirely normal. Yours sincerely someone size 8 👌

SpringTimeIsRingTime · 05/02/2026 22:46

AlexandraJJ · 05/02/2026 19:17

A third of that would be enough for me but we’re all different

Do you have an eating disorder?

Ponoka7 · 05/02/2026 22:47

Crushed23 · 05/02/2026 21:42

I think people are confusing being able to physically eat a certain amount of food and whether it is a reasonable portion for (typically) one of 3 meals that day.

If you’re 7 stones and eat this amount 3 times a day, you won’t stay 7 stones for long, especially if you’re over 35. Unless you have an extremely active job/lifestyle.

No ethnic British women should be eating with the aim of being 7 stone. We are going to go back to were women were bent over post menopause and died from falls/fractures. If you are doing weight bearing exercise and are naturally light, fair enough, but I've never met a woman who is fit/strong and anywhere near that light. Bone density matters. All the research shows that being slightly overweight, or at the top of the recommended wright is good as women age.
For the posters declaring that they have one fishfinger, with salad, you need to nourish your body with good fats and protein.

SpringTimeIsRingTime · 05/02/2026 22:48

I can eat 8 fish fingers in one go so your plate looks fine to me and I'm size 8.
Your dad must think women live on thin air.

There's only about 600 calories on your plate.
This would not fill me up for dinner.
I'd be straight onto desert and probably a snack in a couple of hours.

BambinaCucina · 05/02/2026 22:48

I would probably cook 4 fish fingers, out of habit 'cos that's what I'd put on a fish finger sandwich!

I am trying to lose weight at the moment so chip amount would depend on what else I'd have had throughout the day, and I'd have had at least double the veg. If I wasn't trying to lose weight, that's an absolutely fine portion (with the extra veg).

But, we do eat big portions - I'm also a volume eater. Hence loads of veg. I dont really have an "I'm getting full" sensation until I'm stuffed due to childhood eating so struggle with portions and trying to fill myself up.

In fact, you've just unlocked a memory whereby I was at the lower end of my BMI and was eating a chicken and veg pie (with filo pastry) and half a plate of veg for lunch and someone said how do you eat so much? Was probably around 500-600 cals for the whole thing and was my main meal of the day.

I've always had people commenting on my weight and what I eat, so I sympathise. I grew up being told I had to eat everything on my plate (that I hadn't served and was too much) cos there were starving people abroad and then I had an aunt telling me that I looked like I had 2 bums because I had a belly. And then another aunt, when my daughter had an ice cream as a treat, saying "if she keeps eating like that, she'll be like a barrel". Actual fk them.

Empress13 · 05/02/2026 22:50

Lets face it 3 bites of a fish finger and its gone! Hope you enjoyed it OP
