Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

@fishfingergate I am late to this party but my comment is "you lightweight".

This is my dinner yesterday. There are 4 chicken thighs under there.

Salads with what? Bets it's not a healthy one.

Why do you bet that?

matresense · 05/02/2026 21:47

I’d eat that if I’d not been totally sedentary and hadn’t eaten much since lunch. I’d usually have a bit more veg, but I could easily put that many fishfingers away. I tend to find that my body/hormones function better with less snacking and a full gap between meals unless I’ll refuelling after exercise, so I eat more at mealtimes than some

DH has been known to have 10+ fishfingers -he is 6ft 3 and has a 6 inch waist, it’s infuriating!

What is he, a giant wasp?!

Edited to add, sadly as I'm now old, I can't eat anything like the amount I used to as a youngster. So it would be too much for me now, but I'd have had a damn good go at that size of portion up until a few years ago.

A third of that would be enough for me but we’re all different

😆😆😆

TippyTee · 05/02/2026 21:50

I don’t see a problem in the size. I would eat that for lunch except I dislike vegetables and would prefer a simple garden salad. I don’t eat dinner and fill up at breakfast and lunch so meals are a little bigger.

Come on @AnnieLummox it sounds like you've lost sight of what a healthy weight is! Hmm

😆😂

fishfingergate · 05/02/2026 21:51

Off to bed shortly but standard meals look like this
halloumi salad
tuna, yoghurt and sweetcorn jacket
chicken, tzatziki, feta, sweet potato salad

just to show I don’t just eat beige!

It’s not a heated argument, we send each other pics of our meals
here are 2 of mine, and 1 of his. Feel free to play guess which his is….

The one on the man's lap

EverythingElseIsTaken · 05/02/2026 21:52

It would be too much for me but I have to work very hard to keep my weight down. The veg portion is about what I’d have but I’d only have two fish fingers and probably no “chips”.

Not a competitive under eater - I just seem to have a slow metabolism and struggle to get anywhere near the weight my docs want me to get down to.

TimeForATerf · 05/02/2026 21:52

To be fair to the OP, the fish fingers are pretty skinny, they’re nearly as big as the prong end of the fork!

I don’t think it’s a huge portion, compare that to an average sundayy roast and there’s no comparison.

GetAbsOrDieTrying · 05/02/2026 22:00

PeloMom · 05/02/2026 20:50

My 7 yr old would eat all that

A 7 year old is a growing child so not surprising. OP is not a growing child. My Dd is 9years old, skinny as a reed and eats a tremendous amount of food as she is very active. Today she had a plate piled with spaghetti, steak, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes, green beans and new potatoes. I ate the same minus the spaghetti and much smaller qty of potatoes. Adults should be eating less than growing children.

MaryBeardsShoes · 05/02/2026 22:03

LOL at all the 2 fish fingers is enough 😂😂😂 come off it, 2 is not enough for a grown adult.

Most people eat more calories for their evening meal than for breakfast and lunch though.
I probably eat 400kcal for breakfast, 600kcal for lunch and 700kcal for dinner. 1700kcal overall. 8.5 stone and fairly active. The meal in the OP isn’t more than 700kcal.

Ah fair enough, I’m the complete opposite! A big meal in the evening would affect my sleep so I get most of my calories from breakfast and lunch.

I'd have about half of that.
3 fish fingers, 4 if I was hungry and it was a main meal that day.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 05/02/2026 21:02

wow! “Make better choices?!”

@fishfingergatethe meal is fine!!

What’s wrong with making better choices?! Those potato waffles are terribly unhealthy and same for the fish fingers, both are UPF. I suggested easy swaps for the OP when she is tired. Not sure what you thought was so offensive. I did say as a one off it was ok but if she wanted to lose weight these were options.

Crushed23 · 05/02/2026 22:06

Is it just the camera angle or are the plates actually huge? 😅

The type of food is fine, but portions are on the big side if you’re had 2 other similar-sized meals that day.

I would eat the halloumi salad but replace the bread & butter with quinoa.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 05/02/2026 22:07

I'm small and don't have a big appetite or an active job so it's more than I would eat but it looks like a perfectly reasonable portion to me.

Matronic6 · 05/02/2026 22:08

I think it's fine and your diet in general seems well balanced and healthy.

JustAnotherMumTho · 05/02/2026 22:09

I’d demolish all that without a second thought, would probably have some extra veg. People’s portion sizes vary hugely. A friend of mine puts less mash on her plate than I’d have given my child at age 5. I’m not overweight and nor is my son.

The plates are big, square and ugly brown. If I win the lottery I’m going to smash them up in some rage room and buy new nice ones

No - I would have cooked the portion size of fish fingers stated on the box, some say three is a portion, some say four. I would have had the same size portion of chips and veg. You are tired, hungry and probably cold, it’s fine.

Why? The box portions are decided by marketers and people trying to make the traffic light and BOP units look good and nothing more. Certainly no scientific or dietetic markers.

zubaspal · 05/02/2026 22:12

That’s missing two slices of bread and some tomato sauce for me

Idontpostmuch · 05/02/2026 22:14

I'd only eat 2 fish fingers, half the potato and all the veg. Having said that, I'd wash it down with a can of full sugar coke, so almost as many calories.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 05/02/2026 22:15

@fishfingergatejudging by what you said about your mum I’m not surprised you had an ED OP.

A study found that the best predictor of a daughter’s eating behaviour was the mother’s level of dietary restraint and her perceptions of the risk of her daughter becoming overweight (Birch and Fisher, 2000).
