Is this too big a portion?

Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

My first thought was too many fish fingers as I wouldn’t have more than three. But actually if you were to have a single cod fillet in breadcrumbs it’d probably be the same size wise so I reckon you’re good! Think it looks more than it actually is.

It is really rude to comment on what other’s eat - so dont feel you have to defend yourself.

Older people do have a much smaller appetite. Once you lose the “young person’s metabolism” you are not hungry the same. So its normal for your dad to have a smaller calorie requirement than you.

Yes its not just even the calorie requirement alone that changes, I used to love the sensation of feeling stuffed, a sort of satisfaction that comes from it, but now it makes me feel ill and dizzy and sick, so I dont eat the volume any more but more more calorie dense small meals.

@auserna

are people not allowed to be honest?! Or do you want them to lie and say “oh no, OP, that’s a tiny portion, I’d have double that, eat up”?

Edited

Is it honest, though? Less than two fish fingers for an adult's main meal?

I think people who claim to eat like baby birds are either not being honest about how much they actually consume, or not being honest that they have disordered eating.

And here we have competitive undereaters anonymous, only they're not so anonymous.

For a healthy adult thats not sufficient as a main meal, unless both breakfast and lunch contained a variety of fruit/veg, enough protein and carbs. Its probably enough if you’re six, or aiming to weigh the same as a six year old.

Sometimes when you’re tired and cba this type of meal is sufficient

Yes! I got frozen mango to make smoothies and the organic base mix

Love those bags and they're like 4 quid a pop usually, aren't they? Same with the Itsu dumplings.

I feel another order coming on 😂

Long story but office work so desk job

Most other office jobs would be more comfortable if you could get another one.

I have an old thread that someone clicked on recently about how I was eating too much one winter in a cold office and all the advice was things like 'just don't do it'. I have less annoying aircon now.

Coconutter24 · 05/02/2026 20:20

I’m size 10-12 and could quite easily eat that. I don’t look at that plate and thinks that’s a huge portion. If anything I’d want more potatoes haha

Boots89 · 05/02/2026 20:20

I've lost 7 stone this year and am a size 8 and I would smash all of that 🤣🤣

fishfingergate · 05/02/2026 20:13

Just a conversation like most threads on here
same reason people want opinions on next door neighbours, parking, children’s behaviour and clothes

You must be really bored

It’s not a heated argument, we send each other pics of our meals
here are 2 of mine, and 1 of his. Feel free to play guess which his is….

The first two are absolutely huge portions. But it all depends on what else you’ve eaten that day and how much exercise you’ve done as to whether it was healthy to eat that much.

Oh I love my job so not leaving. It’s just a quirk of the building, we don’t have heating without being too outing about it

Which 2?

Definitely not a lot of food.
Likely a lot of saturated fat and salt, though.

@auserna

i would probably have three fish, a few less waffles and same amount of veg. So what Op had would be too much. Not competitive under eating, just honesty

Xmasbaby11 · 05/02/2026 20:22

looks about normal to me! I don't really eat them but see 2-3 fishfingers as a child's portion.

having a cup of tea and watching TV, sorry it’s not more fascinating at 8.30pm after work

The vegetables are the only part that I’d eat.

Pineapplewaves · 05/02/2026 20:24

No - I would have cooked the portion size of fish fingers stated on the box, some say three is a portion, some say four. I would have had the same size portion of chips and veg. You are tired, hungry and probably cold, it’s fine.

Goditsmemargaret · 05/02/2026 20:28

I would never eat that much in a meal but I have absolutely no doubt I consume more cals than you in a day. I am a grazer and I'm very overweight.

Growlybear83 · 05/02/2026 20:29

I don’t think it’s particularly big, but no doubt people will say that it would feed a family of four for three days.

amusedbush · 05/02/2026 20:30

fishfingergate · 05/02/2026 19:41

The box annoyingly had 10 which is upsetting

I recently bought a bag of 22 chicken dippers. No (reasonable) portion size divides by 22 😭

Is this too big a portion?
PersephonePomegranate · 05/02/2026 20:31

In general terms, I'd say that's a big portion, but it would depend on what else I'd eaten that day. If I'd had a small lunch or had a particularly early lunch and a late dinner, I might well eat that much! Or sometimes, I just have a hungry day and eat more.

Really rude of your dad to comment though!

diddl · 05/02/2026 20:31

That's funny that the plate with no veg is your dad's.

I looked at it & thought that half of that would do me with some veg!

HumbleStumble · 05/02/2026 20:31

Over how many days ?
