Why should Starmer resign? I don’t get it

working9 · 05/02/2026 13:18

I’m not a big fan, but I don’t understand why people believe he should go. Yes he appointed Mandelson as US ambassador when he knew about Epstein’s conviction and that Mandelson was still friends with him - which was wrong IMO.

BUT - people have known that was the case for over a year haven’t they? And Starmer got rid of him as ambassador as soon as he was first mentioned in the Epstein files last year.

Now all this extra stuff has come to light about Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein in the last few days and of course it is dreadful, but how is that Starmer’s fault? Aren’t these disclosures (due to the release of further documents from the Epstein files) as much news to him as they are to everyone else? I don’t think anyone knew the extent of Epstein’s depravity until recently apart from those involved - I don’t see how Starmer could have been expected to know.

Can someone with more understanding of the situation please enlighten me?

I 100% believe that this whole thing has been cooked up by Trump/Putin to destablise the country - hitting the prime minister and the King. Just release the right documents - and hide the rest - and BINGO.

We are being played.

He has to be best friends with Epstein though for there to be files. And take that money.

Bertiebiscuit · 05/02/2026 14:26

Yes! He doesn't appear to care about women and children, especially those who are survivors of abuse. He pretends not to know what a woman is.

I think its right that Andrew (formerly prince Andrew) and Peter Mandelson are geld to account but I'm intrigued how and why the other high profile names, also reported to be involved seem to have escaped the same scrutiny....?

I'm not sure. I'm hopeful it's because they all deserve this level of attention so we need to do them one by one.

There are a lot of unforced errors in this Government.

But I'd rather have a slightly ramshackle Labour Govt than an efficient Conservative Govt - because I don't like the Conservatives. Last time round they had their snouts in the trough, they are simply the political arm of the vested interests.

I'd rather have a Labour Govt prone to backing down than a Conservative Govt that doubles down; I'd rather have virtue signalling that performative cruelty.

Well, me too, but realistically, the Tories aren't even the most likely alternative these days. And much as I dislike them, I would take the shitty Tories over Reform any day.

Well, that’s the question isn’t it? Are they?

He only admitted yesterday (because he had to) that he knew about Mandelson’s continued friendship with the paedophile Epstein but appointed him as US ambassador anyway.

Now people are arguing about how much continued contact with a paedophile is acceptable in public office? Jesus.

Take a look at Mandys previous rap sheet and then make up your mind . Everyone knew about his dodgy dealings and theres probably much that we still dont know.
But Starmer claims "didnt know the extent of it" Like he "didnt know" about Jimmy Saviles
Crimes, despite being DPP at the time.
Pull the other one its got bells on it 🔔

Boris Johnson

No evidence for Boris Johnson's claim about Keir Starmer and Jimmy Savile

The PM's claim that Keir Starmer failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile is not backed up by any evidence.

No, it’s just right wing media hype.
Most people don’t care that much about the Epstein revelations or Mandelson.

My understanding is that the relatively short Cabinet Office report to which you're referring essentially contained info that was already in the public domain, and that we have been aware of for quite a long time.

I was asking about your claim that "secret services" - presumably you mean either MI5 and/or MI6 - had briefed KS in detail about Mandelson, which implied that he knew much more than we previously thought he did.

But it seems that this was a bit of an exaggeration, and you're actually just claiming that KS was aware of information that was in the public domain, which we all agree on and has been known for quite some time.

I think you’re confusing me with the original poster!

Wibble128 · 05/02/2026 14:35

He appears untrustworthy to me because the following which I have learned from MSM and which do not speak of credibility to me:
Appointed Mandelson, apparently in spite of, or failing to include advice from the whips (who know most things about their MPs and their foibles) or a DV process etc.
Has allowed his cabinet to step away from their manifesto commitments
Died in the wool Fabian who is slowly limiting rights to free speech / voting etc etc
I am ot aware that his party has passed any laws to improve the protection of the realm and its people and our way and quality of life.
Has allegedly taken gifts from business people, clothing etc
Denying people local elections as the party is likely to be exposed to the fact the Country has turned aginst them.
Has Lord Hermer as Chancellor who appears to be undermining British Justice
Has David Lammy in any post, as deputy PM he could end up in charge, be afraid!!
Has Rachel from accounts in his cabinet, incompetent or what as Chancellor of exchequer? Has not replaced her and has policies ruining UK businesses.
Wants to return the Chagos Islands at a multi billion cost to the UK when we are apparently broke, just loading up the debt, while not understanding the global security implications.
Where are the three Ukranian / Romanian lads in the legal process, still on remand ???? Really not charged yet??? What is beng suppressed?
Failing to deal with illegal immigration, while stating he is.
Is cosying up to Europe instead of abiding by the Brexit vote.

Lacks charisma in public.

I am waiting the front door bell to ring in the small hours.

Brefugee · 05/02/2026 14:35

Starmer? it is just another example of how he lacks proper talent at leadership. Death by a thousand cuts and this is the last straw?

I don't think the posters who keep banging on about Savile are very interested in facts.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms that can be levelled at Starmer. I have no idea why his opponents seem to feel the need to make stuff up.

gamerchick · 05/02/2026 14:38

Because people don't like him. They expected their standard of living to improve and other magic wand stuff in the first month and when it didn't happen. It's off with his head.

Maybe you’re right. Starmer sure doesn’t seem bothered.

I don't think so.

I think he's an absolute asshole who should be held to account if he was insider trading but having listened to Maxwells interviews and seen so many of these emails, I think it is routine in these circles for people who love money and power or just being next to it, that they accept and seek out 'perks' from the hugely wealthy people they know.

We see it with all of them in the current government and past. And celebrities with Diddy being a case in point. Accepting tickets, clothes, stays in penthouse flats, donations to their charities, invites to parties, holidays on private islands etc, etc.

It's just the way these people move through the world. I don't think it's an indication of being 'best friends'. It's just how their world works, they're all grifting and wanting more, and access to certain friends or associates and trading the same.

The sheer number of people Epstein and Maxwell were involved with is vast, they couldn't possibly have actual friendships with most of them as there literally wouldn't be the time. It was mostly transactional relationships with people they barely knew.

And a smaller number of people who were part of the sex trafficking, rape, exploitation and other crimes.

Alex Jones could have told you the extent of Epsteins depravity. So could a lot of maligned conspiracy theorists

Much as I would like to see Trump and co put on trial and imprisoned, the thoughts of a total fruitcake like Alex 'nutjob' Jones are simply laughable 🤣🤣🤣

Topseyt123 · 05/02/2026 13:44

I agree with you, OP.

Mandelson is clearly a liar and should never have been appointed, that was an error of judgement but not a resignation offence to my mind.

Trump too is connected to the Epstein case. Why is his relationship with Epstein not more often examined in the media, alongside Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Peter Mandelson? I can only think that it is because he is the US President, is as corrupt as fuck and is in overall control of what is released or redacted.

If I were to choose who I wished to see resign or be booted out of office I would rather it was Trump, not Starmer.

I agree. Trump is Teflon shouldered . Nothing he does wrong bloody sticks.

Unbelievable.

VanCleefArpels · 05/02/2026 14:45

Lack of judgment / ability to be swayed by others (McSweeney in particular) means every other decision he makes will be picked on by the opposition(s) - death by a thousand cuts in the John Major style (for those of us old enough!). Add that to the already circling vultures called Rayner and Streeting et al and there’s a perfect storm.

It seems you have an even lower opinion of the left than I do if you think this is just a right wing concern. Of course it isn't though, the front page of the Guardian would show you that.

Tbh you can't put a fag paper between either party, Badenoch has hauled the Tories as far right as Reform, maybe even further....

& if Starmer either doesn't resign or starts to show some leadership, he will ensure we have a far right Govt in 5 years time.

i know some will say "They aren't Far Right" well, look up AfD or RN's policies (both considered Far Right) compare to Tory/Reform, then come back and say that...

Badenoch has undoubtedly moved to the right, but I would like to believe that there are still some more moderate Tories that would help to balance things out a bit. Perhaps that's wishful thinking.
