People who don't read the WHOLE thread before commenting

Unless you're completely new to commenting on MN and therefore aren't aware you can:

a) see how many pages of comments have already been made, and therefore check them before commenting, and:

b) click to read all of the OP's responses and updates

Why do you blithely ignore (what are often) reems and reems of comments and relevant responses from the OPs to put your two penneth'orth on a long-passed or clarified original post, usually parroting what multiple others have already written?

We've seen a great example of this yesterday, on the post written by a poor lady in the ME whose husband had clearly not really been in a barber shop for the two hours he'd said he'd be. We're currently on 36 pages of comments on this particular post, and we still have people commenting on the OP's original point, ignoring everything else she's since written (and in many cases being extremely unfair and nasty to her), promoting dozens of other people to kindly leap to her defense and ask these latecomers to read the entire thread before commenting.

What a mess.

OP posts:

Ha I knew this would be about the barber shop post. To be fair the OP did herself no favours by framing the post as “is it weird to go with my DH to the barber” as opposed to what she really should be asking (and still hasn’t really acknowledged) “I think my DH is cheating twice a month when he goes to the barbers for several hours”

Yeah, I agree. But I suspect the OP may not have completely joined the dots in her head.

She was flirting around the edges of the idea, hence the thread, but didn't want to come out and say it.

Don't blame her, in that particular situation the consequences were huge. Lost marriage, home and possibly job in the space of 48 hours.

Once he didn't appear for their anniversary dinner, then probably it all dropped into place in her head and other things started to make sense.

I hope she is OK.

Because it's social media, all social media is like this.
What annoys me more are people who make no attempt to answer the question and want to hijack the thread.

AnnieLummox · 27/01/2026 10:26

My posts aren’t hugely lengthy to me!) but it seems people just don’t have the concentration for more then a few sentences - that’s absolutely fine but why clog up the thread commenting you can’t be bothered to read it and making me feel like a nuisance poster?

I agree. If the post was too long to keep your interest, you don’t need to spend even more time on it telling me that. It’s not a sodding book review!

Apparently she may update later on a more ‘innocuous’ looking thread, whatever that means.

There were a few threads that were discussing it and all got shut down because of TAAT rules. Huge debate around if she was fake etc. someone found her name that had been replied to on another thread, people went for that poster, unfairly I thought, it was a clever observation . Huge mess.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 27/01/2026 11:19

But who on earth has time to read through 30 pages of comments? This is mumsnet. I thought all mums were crazy busy batch cooking, doing school runs, housework and house admin with no time to spare, and no, I haven't read this whole thread because I'm a mum and very busy!

What was the observation? I was believing her in the first two threads but when she was updating us every move she was making it did make me wonder. Like why would she be posting on MN when she’s just got back home, moved her suitcase into the taxi, all the while she was still on the phone to her lovely dad, telling us she is just about to go inside!? Where was she typing all of this!?

notacooldad · 27/01/2026 11:32

I got called out for NRTT on that thread.
However the person who called me hadn't read up my follow up thread to someone else who had called me out!

In a nutshell people were saying that it doesn't take a bloke 2.5 hrs or whatever to get his hair cut. I responded saying actually in some of the Turkish barbers you can sit and wait for ages and by the time they've done everything it can take that long. I was actually responding to someone's comments, not commenting on the actions of the dh in question before two people hadn't read the whole of the thread jumped on me for supposedly doing what they said I was doing! 😆 🤣

Its not only the OPs posts that need reading but the context of other posters comments.

It’s not a rush to get there first.
Its only a rush to get the first post when some famous dies! Then with the comment 'so sad' because anything longer risks someone else getting in first! (JOKING!)

I’d just read it before the thread got taken down. Will try to summarize:
Someone found another thread, which had a reply to the Barber post OP, suggesting that OP had a baby.

Others said that was a mis-tagging and that the OP had never posted on that other thread.

Hahaha I actually remember your post. I’m new to MN, that was the first one I got into - lurked - and it got ugly real fast. I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t bother to read the whole thread and then get very hostile when told to, because 9/10, their comments don’t make sense because either the story has moved on or another 27 posters have already made the same observation

JoRaRaRa · 27/01/2026 12:00

I fear that I'm someone you're aiming this at 🙈🤣 I didn't know you could see all posts from the op, but I saw someone say that new posters should do that, so now I know that trick, I hopefully won't be chased with pitchforks again. I just didn't want to read 39 pages 😬 I did only post though that it takes less than 2 hours for my hair to be cut and coloured then I did read all the ops updates. Sorry, I never intentionally want to wind people up ✌️🩷

Pitchforks. That’s it!! People seem to come for others like Hall Monitors with pitchforks. I’m very hesitant to post anything 😬😀

It's fine to not read a thread.
But why then post on it when you (general you) obviously aren't up to date with what's been discussed (at least by OP if not in general)? Surely doing so wastes far more precious time than just... not.

Yes, it's possible you might have some vital nugget of information. I would say that of all the posts I see that either explicitly say or imply that they haven't been keeping up, about 95% of them are nugget-free.
