People who don't read the WHOLE thread before commenting

Unless you're completely new to commenting on MN and therefore aren't aware you can:

a) see how many pages of comments have already been made, and therefore check them before commenting, and:

b) click to read all of the OP's responses and updates

Why do you blithely ignore (what are often) reems and reems of comments and relevant responses from the OPs to put your two penneth'orth on a long-passed or clarified original post, usually parroting what multiple others have already written?

We've seen a great example of this yesterday, on the post written by a poor lady in the ME whose husband had clearly not really been in a barber shop for the two hours he'd said he'd be. We're currently on 36 pages of comments on this particular post, and we still have people commenting on the OP's original point, ignoring everything else she's since written (and in many cases being extremely unfair and nasty to her), promoting dozens of other people to kindly leap to her defense and ask these latecomers to read the entire thread before commenting.

What a mess.

Brilliant! 😂

Ha I knew this would be about the barber shop post. To be fair the OP did herself no favours by framing the post as “is it weird to go with my DH to the barber” as opposed to what she really should be asking (and still hasn’t really acknowledged) “I think my DH is cheating twice a month when he goes to the barbers for several hours”

I do agree with you there, but I think the OP was originally writing with what her husband had told her (in a very gaslight-y kind of way) ringing in her ears.

No she wasn't? If you actually go and read the comment the poster wasn't the OP...

Elektra1 · 26/01/2026 07:26

It’s probably because people don’t have time to read often hundreds of messages. I filter to read all the OP’s messages to get the essential information.

You must have a lot of free time!

No I wasn't, she was responding to someone else, my "oops" was in response to her response 😉

No, read the edit and you’ll see that it was this op making the irrelevant comment
pulled up by the other op
and then this op edited and wrote “oops”

I completely agree. I wonder why they do it? The justification when this has come up before is, they don't have time or can't be bothered to read it all. But surely if that's the case you just find a thread you can be bothered to read instead?!

I agree too. It drives me to distraction. The typical responses you mention there could be re-written as 'I am a bit thick and/or utterly self-absorbed'.

No worries. It felt like a disingenuous gotcha comment that was completely unnecessary and unkind.

LifeIsA · 26/01/2026 07:29

I agree with reading all the OP's posts but the whole thread? Maybe if it's 2-3 pages but otherwise, who has time for that unless it's of particular interest? I don't know about you but I have a very busy and full life, pop on and off here between things, and reading long threads of comments, other than OP's, is just not practical. If comments are repeated, oh well, maybe OP sees a trend in the advise and thinks about it a bit more?

Yes, but if you check who the OP was ORIGINALLY responding to, it wasn't me 😂 I had originally written something else in response to her response to the response on her comment, but realised it made no sense, so I edited mine 😂

Easily done. You didn’t read the full exchange before commenting!

You realise the other option, certainly the one I'm suggesting, is that you just don't post? If a thread is already multiple pages long when you come across it and you don't have the time or inclination to read it, you can just opt to not post. Of course we're all very busy etc etc so nobody is going to read 10 pages of a thread but then you have to accept that you're unlikely to be posting anything helpful or that hasn't been said before.

Owly11 · 26/01/2026 07:34

Why do people make a thread about a thread criticising other posters? Human nature I guess.

Not exactly, I wanted to write "oops" but wrote and posted something like "oof", thanks to predictive texting.

Frankly, if I really had been foisted upon my own petard there I'd have been equal parts mortified and amused 😂

I tend to think Ive missed the boat if it's more than x pages that I have time to read. If I really want to get involved I will usually read the ops update and first and last couple of pages but I rarely post if it's more than a few pages..highly unlikely I'll have some astonishing insight no-one else has though of.
