People who don't read the WHOLE thread before commenting

ExpatInSlavikLand · 26/01/2026 06:56

Unless you're completely new to commenting on MN and therefore aren't aware you can:

a) see how many pages of comments have already been made, and therefore check them before commenting, and:

b) click to read all of the OP's responses and updates

Why do you blithely ignore (what are often) reems and reems of comments and relevant responses from the OPs to put your two penneth'orth on a long-passed or clarified original post, usually parroting what multiple others have already written?

We've seen a great example of this yesterday, on the post written by a poor lady in the ME whose husband had clearly not really been in a barber shop for the two hours he'd said he'd be. We're currently on 36 pages of comments on this particular post, and we still have people commenting on the OP's original point, ignoring everything else she's since written (and in many cases being extremely unfair and nasty to her), promoting dozens of other people to kindly leap to her defense and ask these latecomers to read the entire thread before commenting.

What a mess.

OP posts:

That's a really unpleasant attitude to take towards the woman on the barber thread. There is clearly a significant issue in her marriage and you are accusing her of seeking attention and saying she should "bore off".

Oh, and you can edit your posts. You can also read before posting instead of reading afterwards.

Oh the irony...i was directing that at the THIS post! The OP of this post, making a post about a non issue and clogging up other posts, with endless posts telling people to read the updates, which is unnecessary when people already have, and have already clarified their points.

It's up to each of us how we add further comments, i dont need to be policed by you, especially when you have completely missed my point. Unbelievable

brunettemic · 26/01/2026 10:27

Yes…but a lot of times the OP (apparently) misses out all sorts of information. You get things like “my DH has gone out for the evening and only text me once, he’s a cruel man AIBU”, to which the answer is obviously no. Then you get an OP follow up saying well actually they are in a car accident 3 days before, have two broken legs, new born twins, a 9 year old in hospital with a fractured spine, they’re also caring for their terminally ill DM whilst mourning their DF who died the day before*. It’s that sort of nonsense that means people will ignore up because people clearly change the message in their posts.

*this may be an exaggeration to make a point.

ElectoralControversy · 26/01/2026 10:31

@LamentableShoes
When this has been discussed before, someone suggested that people who aren't used to traditional discussion forums treat it as comments under a Facebook post, rather than an actual thread of discussion

That's an interesting point I hadn't thought of.
I actually came to the barber thread from a FB link, which obviously runs a few hours behind anyway.

I suppose people are posting in the same way you see under a FB post, where it's less of a discussion and more of a yelling into the void

As others have said, it's the arrogance that does it for me

"Well there are 700 posts I can't be bothered to read on here, but I'm sure no-one will have mentioned my fascinating take that maybe the husband just wanted some me time and op is controlling"

You don't need to read the whole thread though that's the point. Just the OP posts usually takes a couple of mins max.

I was responding to the title of the thread. Please read it. You are mentioning something different.

of course, I always read ALL or the relevant of OP’s posts. Some op just post once and run anyway leaving pages of pages of pp’s input.

If you think commenting on MN means you think it's "end of world stuff", that suggests you also think this is that important, as you have commented on MN about it.

So many posters love to engage in this hypocrisy - you shouldn't have commented, but it's fine for me to do so - and I find it funny every time!

Boring 🥱

phoenixrosehere · 26/01/2026 10:56

SnowFrogJelly · 26/01/2026 09:50

Let people post how they want and just ignore those that annoy you

Think there should be a hide function for posts like there are for threads because it would make it easier to get through and ignore posts that you don’t want to see while trying to follow along.

Most social media have a hide functions for comments.

yorkshiretoffee · 26/01/2026 11:03

It annoys me too. It also annoys me that someone will post "DD hasn't come home", multiple pages happen and people are still saying "county lines" "she's been trafficked" 16 pages in when actually on page 2 OP has written "oh she's back now, she went to the shops on her way home"

TheatreTheatre · 26/01/2026 11:15

If I was in charge of MNHQ I would suspend posters who do this.

It interrupts discussion, interferes with genuine support, fills up the thread with what is essentially litter, and is rude and arrogant.

Could the Talk Guidelines point out the ‘see all’ facility and ask people to use it before responding? Could OP’s be asked to / be able to add a big UPDATED banner to their thread title?

In the end pp who do not RTFT make themselves look thick. And I think most just post and run and don’t engage so filling up a thread with numerous RTFT posts only fills up the thread and interrupts it even more.

I think if I was in charge of MNHQ there would only be about 5 posters!

Omg, just caught up on the husband / barber / anniversary dinner thread and it’s the same bloody poster as the dog crate suggestion who waded in criticising the OP without reading the updates. I assume they’re just a troll tbh.

Although the passive-aggressive remarks about Beowulf were Peak Mumsnet comedy gold Grin

Yeah, it’s hilarious. They chastise the OP for their pointless thread by leaving a comment on same thread, thereby shoving it back to the top of active discussions. Ignoring it would take less energy. But then nobody would be able to see how intelligent and superior they are.

CannotBeBothered01 · 26/01/2026 12:06

Not everyone's got time to sit and read the whole thread, and my just want to respond to one post they've seen

Oh I've read it , my comments were around the OP opening comment. About reading all the OPs comments in a thread.

LamentableShoes · 26/01/2026 12:22

I suppose people are posting in the same way you see under a FB post, where it's less of a discussion and more of a yelling into the void

Exactly. Perhaps MN should have a special "reply only to the original post" form alongside the normal "post" box on the thread. People could choose that form, type out their response, hit "send" and it can go into a special MN filing cabinet instead of appearing on the thread.

Isobel201 · 26/01/2026 12:27

Its the A&E ones that get me when people haven't read OP's updates and say "go to A&E" when its a day or so later and they've been and gone lol. But I agree I come to a thread and often see pages and pages of people's replies - I haven't got the time or the patience to go through all that.

MilleniumMouse · 26/01/2026 12:49

AnnieLummox · 26/01/2026 09:53

What’s even worse is people who barely bother to read the opening post, never mind the updates. There’s a thread going on at the moment about the OP’s partner’s son not being invited to her nephew’s wedding. She says right at the start that she has checked with her nephew and it is not a mistake/oversight. Yet still people are lining up to say “Have you spoken to him? Are you sure it’s not an oversight?”

Also, check when a thread was started. I’m looking at you, posters on the “Should I let my friend in who arrived early?” thread. There are STILL people posting “Of course you should let her in - go outside right now and offer her a cup of tea!!” even though the thread started on Saturday. The OP never came back, suggesting it’s all made up anyway - but on the off-chance it really happened, the bloody woman isn’t going to be sat in her car two days later!

Agree, it's so unfuriating when people don't even bother to read the OP properly before wading in!

A post will literally start with "I have two kids, 8 and 12...", and guarantee there will be multiple different responses "We need to know how old the kids are before we can make a judgement". "How many kids do you have?" "What year are they in, OP?"

TulipCat · 26/01/2026 13:10

I do have a chuckle at some of the ones where a poster comments, sometimes years after the OP though. There was one recently where the OP was asking for advice about her sick toddler. Someone responded about taking him to the GP, to which the OP came back and said "Thanks for your concern, but he's 8 now and well over it" 😂

Considering some can’t be bothered to read a post properly or click read all OP’s posts, not sure having a second form will work.

Lowbuy2026 · 26/01/2026 07:04

Recent example, the "what's in my wardrobe" thread. Op told us on page 3. Cue a million further posts still guessing 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ooh, what was in the back of the wardrobe then?

mamajong · 26/01/2026 14:08

Thisiswhathings · 26/01/2026 09:29

You don't need to read the whole thread though that's the point. Just the OP posts usually takes a couple of mins max.

And yet the title of this thread states the WHOLE in capital letters and therein lies part of the problem. Many of these (non) 'issues' would be solved if the thread title and first post were an accurate representation of the point, but they are often not which exacerbates the misunderstandings. Its a non issue though really, anyone can read, write, quote, skip, ignore anything they want, its really not that deep is it!

If the OP took umbrage, to a degree, fair point but its all the other post police clogging up threads with passive aggressiveness that cause just as many, if not more issues imo.

Live and let live - their are moderators to police threads if needed, we dont need an army of people with nowt better to do 🙄🤣

WaryHiker · 26/01/2026 14:15

ExpatInSlavikLand · 26/01/2026 07:34

Not exactly, I wanted to write "oops" but wrote and posted something like "oof", thanks to predictive texting.

Frankly, if I really had been foisted upon my own petard there I'd have been equal parts mortified and amused 😂

Hoist with.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 26/01/2026 13:58

Ooh, what was in the back of the wardrobe then?

I think it was Xmas chocs or something incredibly mundane, it was so dull I didn't actually commit the answer to memory, but I do remember a million further answers guessing long after the op had revealed it in all it's dullness

Should be a MN acronym NWRT (not worth reading the thread)

Oh fgs get a life , not end of world stuff is it really ?

Neither is 99% of MN posts. If it's all too trivial for you, pop off to something heavy weight.

UnhappyHobbit · 26/01/2026 17:37

I try to read all the replies from the OP before commenting. If a thread is pages long though, and I think I have something to contribute I will do so.

I think a lot of people don’t have time to read the full thread.
