I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

The speed limit is there for a reason, not for LOLs.

I’m aware. But it’s a human mistake to stray a couple of MPH over, surely? It’s not like I was doing 45!

Definitely overkill in my opinion.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2026 13:04

But if it’s dry and sunny and roads quiet how did your speed creep up?

Tighteningmybelt · 17/01/2026 13:04

You’d be shaking more if you hit someone and got done for dangerous driving. Just stick to 30 no matter how crazy it seems

Evaporateandlisten · 17/01/2026 13:05

Crazy that they expect you to be under the speed limit!

Whatever next!

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2026 13:05

Do remember that your speed dial would have been showing 35+. It’s just the speed trap recorded you at 32.

Because it’s a slight downhill?

Nope. The speedo showed me at 32.

I would say shaking because police pulled you over in an advisory capacity is overkill, yes.

ChocHotolate · 17/01/2026 13:06

So where should the limit be? Should 30 actually mean 35? With a statistically much higher risk of serious injury to pedestrians?

Or should 30 just not apply to you as you’re so skilled? But not skilled enough to keep your speed in check?

OswaldCobblepot · 17/01/2026 13:06

I'm surprised they've got time to pull someone for doing 2 mph over the limit. No officers available to deal with burglaries, robberies etc but happy to allocate resources to this?

That’s not always true, my speedo always reads 2mph under, Dh’s is bang on.

Motnight · 17/01/2026 13:06

Will it make you think again before speeding, Op? (And yes I am deliberately using the word speeding as you were driving over the speed limit.)

momager22 · 17/01/2026 13:06

I think YABU for shaking about it 😂 they were hardly going to throw you in jail, few points at most. Just suck it up and don’t speed next time.

ForumMouseGuards · 17/01/2026 13:06

YANBU. Those who claim to have never crept over the speed limit by a couple of MPHs are fibbing. We’ve all done it.

SeanutBrittleOnToastedCoral · 17/01/2026 13:07

People saying op is BU, how is that supposed to work with an analogue speedo? You wouldn’t be able to even see if it’s 2mph over.

32 is not dangerous and not enforceable. Ridiculous to pull someone over for that.

Onefortheroad25 · 17/01/2026 13:07

Happened a friend of mine recently, she was doing 52 in a 50. Got points and a fine. Think it was €180 or something. We are in Ireland and she was driving out of our village. Don’t think I ever seen guards in the village before!

PumpkinScarf · 17/01/2026 13:07

Seems excessive with the amount of idiots on the road they could and should be pursuing instead.

puffyeyewink · 17/01/2026 13:07

So you were doing slightly over so the police pulled you over to make you aware, didn’t give you a ticket, and you are angry? At what speed should they pull you over?
what will happen in future is you will be more observant and not drive over, and you didn’t get a ticket! Surely this is a good day for you!

Absolutely and the shoplifting that goes on

easy targets

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 13:08

You are shaking because you got pulled over because you were over the speed limit?

Get a grip. You broke the rules, you got caught and were lucky enough to just get a warning. It's not hard to keep to the limit.

Motnight · 17/01/2026 13:06

oh give over. If I was doing 35 I’d understand but a couple of MPH on a clear road with a slight downhill isn’t speeding.

LaundryScales · 17/01/2026 13:08

They caught you, told you off but didn’t charge you.

Learn your lesson and be more careful in the future.
