I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

What you mean to say is, “I’ve just been stopped for speeding”

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 13:18

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:16

But I was.

But you literally weren't.

The limit is not "30mph give or take". It's 30. You were over it. Grow up and accept you were wrong.

SeanutBrittleOnToastedCoral · 17/01/2026 13:07

People saying op is BU, how is that supposed to work with an analogue speedo? You wouldn’t be able to even see if it’s 2mph over.

32 is not dangerous and not enforceable. Ridiculous to pull someone over for that.

It absolutely is enforceable. Why would you think it wasn't?

puffyeyewink · 17/01/2026 13:19

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:14

Because he was very intimidating, I’m a woman on my own and he was treating me like a criminal

Are you joking?! Treating you like a criminal?! He let you know you were going a bit over so you can be more aware in future and let you go with no ticket!

He wouldn’t have just picked a random spot to pull people over, there will have been complaints from locals about speeding in that area if he was there with a speeding gun checking people. He used discretion and chose not to give you a ticket.

jamandcustard · 17/01/2026 13:19

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:16

But I was.

How? You admit you were going over the speed limit.

Soontobe60 · 17/01/2026 13:20

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:13

I just think it’s a bit silly. About two miles away there’s a town full of drug addicts and drunks who make part of the town a no go area. But they’d rather pull over innocent people!

But you weren’t innocent by your own admission, you were breaking the law. Just own it!

ThatCoolGoose · 17/01/2026 13:20

Of course it is speeding!!!! What bit about 32 in a 30 is not speeding!!!???

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:20

wrongthinker · 17/01/2026 13:18

Love threads like this. They bring all the MN busybodies to finger wag. "Oooh a mile over the speed limit, lock her up!" "She's no better than she ought to be!" etc. The kind of people who were in seventh heaven during covid, twitching curtains to see if any of the neighbours went out twice in a day.

YANBU at all, OP. There was no need to pull you over for that, and I'm very wary of police officers pulling over lone women after the cases we've heard in the last couple of years. I'm not surprised you were shaken up. You could probably report him, although who knows if it would do any good.

This is exactly it. He’s a man on his own, seen a lone woman doing 32 and decided to exercise a power trip.

That’s not always true, my speedo always reads 2mph under, Dh’s is bang on.

Agree, mine is consistently 1mph over.

Anyway, I’d be annoyed about this too for many reasons. It would also scare me to be pulled over by the police so the people mocking the OP for shaking, maybe have a little empathy.

mondaytosunday · 17/01/2026 13:20

Yes I always thought there was a bit of leeway, especially as not all speedometers are 100% accurate, but increasingly there seems to be none. But over the limit is over the limit. It’s 20mph near me which on a straight clear road seems almost impossible to keep to but with the amount of speed cameras around and you bet we do!

itsthetea · 17/01/2026 13:22

You were speeding and got pulled over

it’s not overkill

there are speed limits for a reason and that extra 2 mph translates into a great probability of death should there be an accident

not saying I have never gone over the limit but I wouldn’t be denying I had done wrong

and being a woman on your own doesn’t protect you from police if you break the law

if it does bother you , how about you don’t break the law then they won’t pull you over ?

Jellybunny56 · 17/01/2026 13:22

You were speeding, the definition being that you were over the speed limit.

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 13:24

Or he was a traffic cop just doing his job.

Or maybe he was just a man doing his job. He wouldn't have pulled you over if you hadn't been speeding.

I'm not for one second saying I've never gone over the limit BTW but I'd at least own it if I was pulled up for it!

Grammarninja · 17/01/2026 13:24

Absolutely overkill. He was clearly bored and on a power trip. I don't think he could have done anything anyway as there's a 10% allowance as far as I know if you want it to hold up in court.

hufngids · 17/01/2026 13:24

It is 20mph everywhere in my city. I never go over as there are cameras everywhere and even 2mph over would merit a ticket. As to whether it is overkill to stop and advise, possibly, but how were they to know you were going to continue at 32mph and not increase your speed further along? Consider yourself lucky you only had an advisory stop.

I have a lot of sympathy for going 2 over on a slight downhill on a quiet road, but this idea that police doing their literal job - by warning, not even fining - is an intimidating power trip is utterly ridiculous.

That's not a power trip, that is literally the power they are meant to exercise.

You feel they shouldn't be pulling over the likes of you. That's indignity, not fear.

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 13:25

YANBU The officer was a moron on a power trip.

Whaleandsnail6 · 17/01/2026 13:25

Its a none event...you admit you were over the speed limit. Police stopped you to warn you, and most likely, that will work in making you more mindful in future of your speed

He hasn't given you a ticket or anything, just a warning...take note and move on.

Merlin102 · 17/01/2026 13:25

The speed limit is just that - a limit not a target. You should aim for 27 or 28.

PatThePenguin · 17/01/2026 13:26

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:04

I’m aware. But it’s a human mistake to stray a couple of MPH over, surely? It’s not like I was doing 45!

Yeah it's a human mistake and he did his job by pulling you over and telling you about it 🤷‍♂️

Not sure why you're shaking and typing

LetMeGoogleThat · 17/01/2026 13:26

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:06

Nope. The speedo showed me at 32.

Wait, so if you are so certain what the speedo was before you stopped the car when you were pulled over......you already knew you were speeding.

The police were right, they can charge you even if it was 31. 10% + 2 isn't a rule, it's the police flexibility in charging at the roadside.

PGmicstand · 17/01/2026 13:26

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:08

oh give over. If I was doing 35 I’d understand but a couple of MPH on a clear road with a slight downhill isn’t speeding.

It IS speeding as you were over the speed limit. That's literally what speeding means.
You may have been driving safely, with due care and attention, etc. but the fact is that you were driving above the signposted limit.

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 13:27

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 13:25

YANBU The officer was a moron on a power trip.

If he was that we would have given op a ticket.

I bet it was literally "did you know you were speeding? No? Please be more careful in future".

And op has just massively overreacted.

BG2015 · 17/01/2026 13:28

Too much time on their hands. I agree, total over the top. More important things to deal with surely.
