I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

Experienced drivers learn to judge their speed by the engine noise, I can even do this in an electric, though my ID3 was a lot better for that than my current EV3. It's a lot easier in a diesel/petrol with actual revs to hear.

You don't have to glue your eyes to the speedo. You set your speed at the speed limit and you check with a quick glance now and then if you're creeping up. You learn to drive without creeping up.

I do love the thing in my current car where I can tell it to follow the car on front at a certain distance, but not go above the limit even if the car in front does.

I’m sorry but this is rubbish. I’ve driven many different cars over many years and I wouldn’t for a minute suppose I could tell the difference between 30 and 32mph by engine noise.

Maybe she can and you can't?

It's not "the difference between 30 and 32", it's the fact that your speed is creeping up that you hear and feel.

I'm sorry you can't do it, it does depend a lot of the car as well.

Thank you. It helps that I was taught right from the start to drive by listening to the engine noise.

When I took my test the examiner told me to start the car and move off and I didn't. He repeated his command, sounding a bit annoyed and I explained that I hadn't started the car because Concorde was just going over and I couldn't hear the engine noise.

He was so impressed, a young woman using the engine noise to drive by, I swear it's why he passed me 😆
