I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

Power trip? Really ? For stopping you breaking the law? Because it wasnt that much ?

I bet if every shop shortchanged you by 8% you wouldn’t be saying it’s not that much

Disturbia81 · 17/01/2026 13:28

Definitely excessive, obviously a slow day for them and they have targets to meet.

Theonebutnotonly · 17/01/2026 13:28

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:04

I’m aware. But it’s a human mistake to stray a couple of MPH over, surely? It’s not like I was doing 45!

That's why he didn’t give you a speeding ticket. If the speed limit is 30, it's 30, not 32. Another time, you'll be more careful. Surely we don’t want individual policemen deciding whether or not to turn a blind eye to the law being broken.

MimiSunshine · 17/01/2026 13:28

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:20

This is exactly it. He’s a man on his own, seen a lone woman doing 32 and decided to exercise a power trip.

Get a grip.

im no man apologist but he was just a person doing his job. Next time you drive down that hill you’ll be more careful. Or maybe you won’t because you don’t think you’re in the wrong for going above the speed limit.

and yes I do have points on my license because I’ve also been caught slightly speeding. I’ve no excuse and I’m not proud. But I am now very careful.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 17/01/2026 13:28

Not sure why you are shaking over it. They told you to be more careful and let you go.
I got pulled over (long time ago now) and I wasn't much over the limit, but I was over. They were going to prosecute me for it but then they decided not to and just told me not to do it again. I just listened to what they said and didn't worry about it.
Mind you I think I got away with it because it was something like 5:45:in the morning, they probably clocked off at 7 or something and couldn't be bothered with the paperwork.

Brefugee · 17/01/2026 13:28

but that's nearly 10% over

2026NewTricks · 17/01/2026 13:20

Agree, mine is consistently 1mph over.

Anyway, I’d be annoyed about this too for many reasons. It would also scare me to be pulled over by the police so the people mocking the OP for shaking, maybe have a little empathy.

But it's not that she is upset. I would also be upset if the police pulled me over (regardless of whether I was doing something wrong or not).

It's that she seems to think this means the police officer did something wrong. Like he shouldn't be judged by his job description, professionalism, whether he was racist/violent/..., no, it was wrong because she doesn't like being pulled over by the police.

Accidental double

If he was that we would have given op a ticket.

I bet it was literally "did you know you were speeding? No? Please be more careful in future".

And op has just massively overreacted.

Its 2mph. Stories like this just confirm how useless the police force is IMO

jamandcustard · 17/01/2026 13:29

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 13:25

YANBU The officer was a moron on a power trip.

Or he was just a bloke doing his job. OP was speeding - she fully admits it. She was pulled over, given a warning and sent on her way - it's really not a big deal.

PatThePenguin · 17/01/2026 13:29

LetMeGoogleThat · 17/01/2026 13:26

Wait, so if you are so certain what the speedo was before you stopped the car when you were pulled over......you already knew you were speeding.

The police were right, they can charge you even if it was 31. 10% + 2 isn't a rule, it's the police flexibility in charging at the roadside.

Exactly.

One minute the OP claims it was a mistake and the next she claims she knew exactly what her speedo said.

NotnowMildrid · 17/01/2026 13:29

Isn't there a 10% leeway? (Might be wrong). In other words you would have had to be doing over 33 miles per hour to get a fine.

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/01/2026 13:29

OswaldCobblepot · 17/01/2026 13:06

I'm surprised they've got time to pull someone for doing 2 mph over the limit. No officers available to deal with burglaries, robberies etc but happy to allocate resources to this?

Traffic officers deal specifically with traffic offences and issues.

Disturbia81 · 17/01/2026 13:28

What are you talking about? It won’t meet any “targets” because he didn’t process it as a ‘crime’

TessSaysYes · 17/01/2026 13:30

2mph over isn't speeding as some of the harpies on here are trying to suggest. I agree with you OP, the cop is kinda wasting his time, when they won't come out to you after a burglary etc
2mph is inside the margin of error for their speed detecting machines, which is why nobody is every prosecuted for being 2mph over.

ElizabethsTailor · 17/01/2026 13:30

OP can you clarify if he was using a speeding gun or just based it on his car speedometer? I don’t understand how he would have used a speeding gun from the side of the road, been so incensed at your 32mph that the then ran to his car and sped after you to hunt you down … so I am guessing he had based it on his own car speedometer.

No, there's no leeway, they can charge you for doing 31 in a 30 if they want to.

LostMySocks · 17/01/2026 13:31

30mph zones are there for a reason - busy built up areas with pedestrians.

There was a speed awareness camya while ago that focused on chances of a child surviving a collision.

I'm sure it was something like 20mph most survive, 30mph half will survive, 40mph most will be killed or have serious injury. If you are driving even 2mph over then you start to move destructive speeds.

January2026Bluesoohs · 17/01/2026 13:31

That’s a joke the police officer clearly has nothing better to do! Speed cameras allow a couple over the limit due to all cars being different with speed meters, so I don’t get why he had to be a bell end over something so small. 🙄

grumpygrape · 17/01/2026 13:31

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:05

Because it’s a slight downhill?

Try that one on the Magistrates 🤣

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 17/01/2026 13:31

I'm the slowest driver in England and hate speeding but even I think he was being ridiculous. He was just enjoying the power.

You’re not going to the magistrates for 32 in a 30 😂

How can it be about targets when he didn't give her anything but a verbal warning?

cakedup · 17/01/2026 13:32

I work in the road safety sector. The speed limit is not a target, its the absolute maximum. Reducing your speed limit by 1mph reduces your crash frequency by 5%. I could go on.

Yes there is but it depends on the police force 🙄🙄🙄 just looked it up!
