I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

OP can you clarify if he was using a speeding gun or just based it on his car speedometer? I don’t understand how he would have used a speeding gun from the side of the road, been so incensed at your 32mph that the then ran to his car and sped after you to hunt you down … so I am guessing he had based it on his own car speedometer.

I guess so? I have no idea. He was behind me and put his lights on and gestured for me to pull over.

Because it’s a slight downhill?

So you need to brake. Downhill isn't a free pass to nudge over the speed limit.

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 13:33

MimiSunshine · 17/01/2026 13:29

What are you talking about? It won’t meet any “targets” because he didn’t process it as a ‘crime’

Maybe he has his own personal 'being a dick' targets to meet?

Ifyounevergiveup · 17/01/2026 13:33

I had to go on a speeding course for 2mph over. They covered it on the course and showed the increased damage if you hit someone at 2mph faster than the limit. It was shocking. Use your cruise control (they go down to 20mph). I had no excuse and neither do you. He did you a favour, the course would have cost you £100.

His car will have a camera which shows your speed on it - at least, that's what the traffic cops have on the TV shows Grin

Nextdoortomeis · 17/01/2026 13:35

Wait until we go like Wales and it's 20mph

godmum56 · 17/01/2026 13:36

you were speeding, you got caught. Suck it up and move on.

PatThePenguin · 17/01/2026 13:36

Just idly wondering what the replies would be like if the OP had been pulled over by a policewoman 😁

TamarindCottage · 17/01/2026 13:37

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:13

I just think it’s a bit silly. About two miles away there’s a town full of drug addicts and drunks who make part of the town a no go area. But they’d rather pull over innocent people!

Except you weren’t innocent … move on and be more mindful next time you drive down that road

DragonsAndDaffs · 17/01/2026 13:37

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:20

This is exactly it. He’s a man on his own, seen a lone woman doing 32 and decided to exercise a power trip.

You gave him a reason to stop you by being over the 30mph speed limit. That is on you. He may have been on a "power trip" or he may have just been doing his job...............perhaps yesterday he dealt with a serious accident involving a child and a driver doing 32mph..........perhaps you look similar to a known criminal and he wanted to check that out.........

You were exceeding the speed limit and have been shaken by the experience and warning. Focus on not being stopped in future by keeping to the speed limit. Rather than getting angry at someone doing their job. Many seemingly minor police stops for speeding / no seat belt etc lead to the uncovering of all sorts of other offences........this is why they do them.

DoveTurtle · 17/01/2026 13:37

I genuinely had no idea there was people out there who thought the speed limit didn’t apply to them if it was a dry sunny day 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Did you ask to speak to his manger by any chance?

LetMeGoogleThat · 17/01/2026 13:37

NotnowMildrid · 17/01/2026 13:29

Isn't there a 10% leeway? (Might be wrong). In other words you would have had to be doing over 33 miles per hour to get a fine.

The leeway is the Officers charging decision, not an automatic consideration. OP hasn't been charged, she's just been warned and is having difficulty accepting its her fault, resulting in shaking and posting on MN.

isitmytime · 17/01/2026 13:37

OswaldCobblepot · 17/01/2026 13:06

I'm surprised they've got time to pull someone for doing 2 mph over the limit. No officers available to deal with burglaries, robberies etc but happy to allocate resources to this?

You do realise it’s roads policing officers that dealt with the OP not response policing. They mainly deal with driving issues not the crimes you mention.
it’s literally their job to police the roads. They do of course get used for other crimes occasionally.

saying that OP it sounds like you’ve met a jobsworth. But is it an accident black spot? There’s a reason they’re there advising drivers of their speed. It’s very easy for speed to creep up on a clear road but 2MPH over I’d doubt would actually be enforced/prosecuted.

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 13:37

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 13:29

Its 2mph. Stories like this just confirm how useless the police force is IMO

Explain to me how telling someone they are speeding is "useless". OP should be grateful that she's been warned and not fined. Maybe from now on she utilise the massive dial on her dash to keep an eye on her speed.

Piknik · 17/01/2026 13:37

I live in London and most roads are now 20mph. It's almost impossible to keep to it and takes a lot of concentration. I got 3 points and a £120 fine last week for doing 23.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/01/2026 13:38

Much of it’s 20 mph around here - think yourself lucky.

Yanbu. 2 miles over the limit is nothing compared to all the awful sh!t that's going on in the world. Sounds like he was on a power trip like some of those on here who agree with him. I would be shaken too, disgusting behaviour from someone in authority with nothing better to do. FFS!

Agree.
I was once pulled over on my way home from a work curry night. I saw the police car and male driver join the road behind me and I absolutely made sure I stayed under the speed limits (I do anyway but I was super careful). After following me for about 5 miles he pulled me over. For speeding. He said I'd been doing 65+ in a 50 limit. Total lie.
He did not appreciate my suggestion that I follow him to his station (about half a mile away) and he could show me the evidence, and I could speak to his superior, but he let me go on my way.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 17/01/2026 13:39

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:14

Because he was very intimidating, I’m a woman on my own and he was treating me like a criminal

Sounds like an excuse to be the victim. You were going slightly over the limit and got called out for it, didn’t even get a ticket. Most of us will go very slightly over at some point, it’s unlucky you got caught but just own it.

Yeah, fuck him. How dare he do his job? 🙄

LordEmsworth · 17/01/2026 13:39

If only there were some way you could have avoided this. Clearly, it was completely outside your control and the police officer should have realised that although the car was moving faster than the limit, and you were at the wheel, there was nothing you could have done. And therefore you weren't breaking the law, it just looked like you were.

annmarie6 · 17/01/2026 13:39

How ridiculous! What a waste of police time. I can’t believe people are actually saying you’re being unreasonable 🤣. Who actually does 30 in a 30? 32 is nothing!

travelallthetime · 17/01/2026 13:39

shaking because they pulled you over and had a word....really? You would fail your driving test for that so.....just do the speed limit

im going to go ahead and assume youre joking. She wouldnt be laughing if she hit a kid, its 30 for a reason

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:04

I’m aware. But it’s a human mistake to stray a couple of MPH over, surely? It’s not like I was doing 45!

And you got a warning, not a ticket, so don't see what the issue is.
