I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

How ridiculous! What a waste of police time. I can’t believe people are actually saying you’re being unreasonable 🤣. Who actually does 30 in a 30? 32 is nothing!

Yeah, who sticks to the speed limit? Weirdos, that's who 😉

CoffeePleaseBlack · 17/01/2026 13:41

YANBU. Fucks me off. The amount of times I’ve seen people speeding doing well over 32 in a pedestrian area, dangerously overtaking etc and ‘racers’ yet they are probably the ones never caught!!

travelallthetime · 17/01/2026 13:40

im going to go ahead and assume youre joking. She wouldnt be laughing if she hit a kid, its 30 for a reason

Unfortunately I’m not joking. She was doing 32 mph, not 40. There is no way everyone manages to stick to 30 religiously.

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 13:42

Piknik · 17/01/2026 13:37

I live in London and most roads are now 20mph. It's almost impossible to keep to it and takes a lot of concentration. I got 3 points and a £120 fine last week for doing 23.

It really doesn't take a lot of concentration.

I do wonder about people who say things like this, and how in control of a car they actually are if glancing down at a speedo from time to time and adjusting the pressure of their right foot in response is a challenge.

TheFrendo · 17/01/2026 13:42

It is a rational encounter, with a positive outcome for you.

Do not think about it any further. If choose to keep it in your head it will give you trouble where non is warranted.

1457bloom · 17/01/2026 13:42

Think how many people drive at 72mph plus on the motorway. Have the police got nothing better to do?

constantnc · 17/01/2026 13:42

I also did a course for 32 in a 30 🫣 😬

SeanutBrittleOnToastedCoral · 17/01/2026 13:42

jamandcustard · 17/01/2026 13:18

It absolutely is enforceable. Why would you think it wasn't?

The fact that a cop took time out of his day to pull her over without giving her a ticket. This is what the 10% (+2?) threshold is for

No, but most are at least grown up enough to admit it when they're caught, not go on the defensive.

Nanda66 · 17/01/2026 13:44

My father was killed by a speeding driver but even so I don’t think you’re being entirely unreasonable if it was 32 in a 30. However you got a warning, not a ticket so I’d be counting myself lucky.

There is no nationwide 10% threshold. Police can (and have) ticketed people for doing 31 in a 30. A PP upthread got a fine and a course for doing 32 in a 30.

OP didn't get a ticket because the officer chose to let her off - not because he wasn't allowed to charge her.

jamandcustard · 17/01/2026 13:39

Yeah, fuck him. How dare he do his job? 🙄

Yeah go and catch some murderers and rapists instead of intimidating a lone women driving 2mph over the limit 😡

Beachtastic · 17/01/2026 13:44

AllThisFuss · 17/01/2026 13:15

You're not going to do it again though, are you?

I'd be walking everywhere if the police round here started being so picky 🫢

Think how many people drive at 72mph plus on the motorway. Have the police got nothing better to do?

But it's not the point, is it?

You can argue about whether the police should be enforcing speed limits - and they should, because why have them otherwise - but you can't argue that if you get caught you somehow don't deserve to be caught. It's just deeply immature to argue and think otherwise.

Just idly wondering what the replies would be like if the OP had been pulled over by a policewoman 😁

Would be the same as you can bell end police women too.

I mean, he's a traffic cop, he's just doing his job.

Biskieboo · 17/01/2026 13:45

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:20

This is exactly it. He’s a man on his own, seen a lone woman doing 32 and decided to exercise a power trip.

Or an alternative view is that he was doing his job. I dearly wish that it was the case that being a lone female was a free pass to break any old traffic laws you fancy, but it's probably sensible that it's not.

flatterlylatterly · 17/01/2026 13:45

It would have been harsh to take this further but they only reminded you to stay under the speed limit in future. It's a useful warning that should make you more careful in future. No harm done.

DashDanceDare · 17/01/2026 13:45

momager22 · 17/01/2026 13:06

I think YABU for shaking about it 😂 they were hardly going to throw you in jail, few points at most. Just suck it up and don’t speed next time.

This

I don't think that traffic cops do that kind of thing 😂

dottieautie · 17/01/2026 13:46

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:08

oh give over. If I was doing 35 I’d understand but a couple of MPH on a clear road with a slight downhill isn’t speeding.

It’s the very definition of speeding. 30.5mph is still speeding whether you like it or not. AIM for 28mph in future and you’ll be fine going 2mph over.

btw you’re expected to brake when gathering speed travelling downhill, not ride it out and blame the environment if you get caught going fast than the legal limit for the road 🤦‍♀️

LetMeGoogleThat · 17/01/2026 13:48

ThisSparklyHelper · 17/01/2026 13:38

Yanbu. 2 miles over the limit is nothing compared to all the awful sh!t that's going on in the world. Sounds like he was on a power trip like some of those on here who agree with him. I would be shaken too, disgusting behaviour from someone in authority with nothing better to do. FFS!

Absolutely correct! The road traffic officer, who's actual job is to police the road, should have been out righting all the other wrongs in the entire world. Instead, there he is bullying poor OP for her heavy right foot 🙄

I have been driving for 35 years and for most of my life London was 30mph minimum. 20mph feels un-naturally slow to me and my car. Most modern cars are not designed to drive at 20mph and it IS an effort to keep adjusting down.

But I am completely in control thanks. Sorry to burst your sanctimonious bubble.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/01/2026 13:48

It makes me cross that they have time for this when they don't appear to have time to deal with burglaries, assaults, shoplifters and when I am overtaken regularly on the A3 by people doing 65/70 in a 50mph limit.

This is how I feel. My town has a huge crime problem. But instead of spending time on that, they’re doing this.

Also, if his Speedo said 32, he must have been doing it too. So he was also just as in the wrong!
