Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Seems bland

As opposed to…plain boiled potatoes…

DappledThings · 05/01/2026 14:21

Nope. The cheese is an addition which changes it into a cheese sauce. I add cheese if I'm making macaroni cheese. I don't add cheese to the white sauce in a lasagna.

So your lasagna doesn’t have cheese in…? Isn’t it meant to? That’s the good bit

@Brainfogtothemax why is a pasta bake with potatoes on the side weird, but lasagne with potatoes on the side is not? Do you do garlic bread as well?

WonderfulSmith · 05/01/2026 14:25

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/01/2026 13:47

It’s not in Italy.

But I will admit to being someone who mutters “espresso” and “panino” at people passive aggressively. I did live there so that’s my excuse for being a purist.

careful. I said on here once about ‘expresso’ not being a word and got a huge telling off, but then I also got told I wasn’t very well travelled because trying to use US dollars in European countries will be poorly received.

MissDoubleU · 05/01/2026 14:25

OP why don’t you just make everything exactly as you were going to just using pasta instead of lasagne sheets

Loveapineapplepizzame · 05/01/2026 14:25

Mix the meat sauce with pasta, put bechamel sauce and cheese on top and bake it. We do this loads.

Mine has mozzarella on top. Bechemel has a lovely creamy, thick texture just as it is, without cheese being added.

Umy15r03lcha1 · 05/01/2026 14:25

Why don't you serve up what you have and call it scrambled eggs with boiled potatoes....

Doggymummar · 05/01/2026 14:26

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:38

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

Jeez carb overload

My husband has always had since a child instead of lasagne sheets.... pancakes. Weird but really works just make a few, cut them into the shape of dish and layer (obviously no lemon or sugar!)
No idea where his mum got the idea it's just how it is!

Nothing weird about filling pancakes with bolognaise sauce, rolling them up and then backing in a disk covered with a cheese sauce of your liking. Or so I learned from Italian friends at Uni.

Personally I much prefer pasta bake anyway. Just make up some pasta (short ones like macaroni, farfalle or fusilli) mix, put in a dish and top with a cheese sauce of your liking. Back until the edges have some nice crispiness to them.

If you have made this from scratch (i.e. without using a frozen sauce) you can then fry any leftovers for a brunchy type experience.

(I have just returned to the keyboard after preparing tonights meal of pasta bake 😀)

Youremylobster86 · 05/01/2026 14:26

OP its making me chuckle how you sound so confident about the lasagne with potatoes. It really is bizarre!

Why dont you have bolognese with pasta and put the spuds in the fridge to have with something tomorrow? They will still be tasty😊

Three carbs?! 😅

Mary Berry uses cheese and mustard in the sauce for her lasagne but calls it a white sauce

Does bechamel not have cheese in? I melt butter, flour, milk, then add grated cheese…I thought the cheese was the whole point, this thread is confusing 😂

No, you made a cheese sauce. Bechamel doesn't have cheese.

Cheese goes on top.

wishingonastar101 · 05/01/2026 14:27

So you have a cheese sauce, a bolognaise sauce, pasta and some potatoes? surely you can work out a meal?

PassportPanicFuuuck · 05/01/2026 14:28

but what about the potatoes?

Um, the potatoes?? I thought you were making lasagne?

Just cook up some penne or similar, mix it all up and call it a pasta bake. Simple.

Solost92 · 05/01/2026 14:28

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:49

What-mash and the pasta too? -seems weird

No, either one.

sittingonabeach · 05/01/2026 14:28

Can you make potato salad with the potatoes, not necessarily to be eaten with the pasta dish

You'd have thought... but apparently the only possible meal is lasagne with boiled potatoes.

Duck à l’Orange?

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/01/2026 14:29

I have no idea what you're making, but it's not lasagne.

Mash the spuds, put on top.and brown off with some cheese in oven.

Missingducks · 05/01/2026 14:29

Could the potatoes become potato salad as a side with the pasta bake? Or potato salad for lunch tomorrow ...

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:29

MissDoubleU · 05/01/2026 14:25

Because a pasta dish or pasta bake with potatoes too just seems odd
