Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

I think buttery boiled potatoes go with anything!

You can't put the tomato based bolognese-style meat with the potatoes, that is grim. A cottage pie doesn't have tomato!

You can do anything you want in your own kitchen. Isn't that why people bother cooking ?

Maybe I'm doing it wrong ?

Of course you can. Have you never had Moussaka, or a baked potato with chilli or even bolognese sauce on it?

Why is it bizarre though?? I’ve had this since childhood

Honestly, it's really bizarre to serve boiled potatoes with lasagne.
But given that you think that's perfectly fine, why do you think it's NOT fine to serve them with a pasta bake? Same foods, just arranged differently.
Genuine question.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 05/01/2026 17:24

If you have potatoes and flour you could make gnocchi Wink

OP, I think you've invented a lovely new dish. I reckon that'll taste nice, even if not what you intended.

I dont really feel brittish lasagne is particularly common in Italy (in Japan loads of Italian restaurants sold seafood doria, which is probably pretty rare in Italy!). If you & yours like it, then that's all that matters.

If it so boring why did you stick around to read and comment on it?

Talipesmum · 05/01/2026 17:25

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 17:12

Not really feeling it tbh 😂

Looks a right state, but I bet it tastes brilliant.
Ragu, mash, cheesy sauce - that’ll keep the snow from the door.
Also you are of course somewhat nuts for having buttery boiled potatoes with lasagne, but then I think chips or garlic bread with lasagne is also silly. I prefer more lasagne with my lasagne.

Yes true, moussaka is the work of gods, I forgot that! That doesn't have mash though, the texture is very different.

Bobiverse · 05/01/2026 16:56

Did you already reheat and mash the potatoes? You know you can’t reheat them again, right?
You should only reheat something once. So you’re going to have to eat cold mash.

I made the potatoes earlier, put them in the fridge and have just heated and mashed them?? Is that ok??

Where's the soffrito, the red wine, the love! I spent most of a day making some big lasagnes over Christmas- this makes me sad but I'm thoroughly enjoying the thread thanks op! I do hope your dinner problems come to an end soon 🙏

What is Soffrito?

Ignore that poster, of course you can reheat potatoes again.

PuppyMonkey · 05/01/2026 17:31

Well, I tell you what OP, I’m not feeling that well and have no appetite but I quite fancy eating what’s on your plate. Grin

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 17:31

And defo no wine…I have a child.

LilWoosmum82 · 05/01/2026 17:33

Rename it 'its just been xmas, leave me alone, don't complain and eat it or else' basically i wouldn't worry it sounds lush or shove some other pasta in. If they complain just tell them to sod off xx

Bobiverse · 05/01/2026 17:34

Minjou · 05/01/2026 17:31

Once. You don’t reheat multiple times.

It sounded like she made them, let them go cold then reheated them a couple hours ago to mash them and then was going to reheat a 2nd time to serve them. Which you shouldn’t do. And since OP seems clueless about cooking, I’d worry about safe food storage.

If she only reheated them once when about to eat then that’s fine.

I have a child too and you can cook it with wine as the wine will be cooked off as it evaporates.

Breadcat24 · 05/01/2026 17:39

Yes your ragu is shocking as well.
You need sofrito
Lasagne has bechamel not cheese sauce- some parmesan grated on the top.
So you are not making lasagne at all so do not stress about whatever you are making
Freeze the cooked potatoes and make the rest of it into a generic pasta bake

Hammy19 · 05/01/2026 17:44

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:51

I really don’t know at this point, everything I thought about lasagna since my childhood is a lie, Dh has never queried the boiled potatoes or cheese sauce though
I’m ringing my mum

I think this is the best post I have ever seen on mumsnet 😂

OP, you are a legend!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 05/01/2026 17:45

.Damnation.

I forgot to add pasta to yesterday's roast beef dinner.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 05/01/2026 17:47

Never heard of potatoes with lasagne, sounds like a crazy combo
